Indefinite does not equal permanent.... right? Wrong. Right? Riot staff help answer.

So I was reading through the Moderation board, and I saw someone having a debate with a Riot staffer about the worthiness of their permaban, due to C9's Jensen (incarnati0n) being UNbanned after a supposed "permaban". The Riot staff member said in no unequivocal terms that INDEFINITE does NOT equate to PERMANENT -- hence the reason for Jensen being allowed back into competitive play.

Then I perused the post about tyler1 being banned -- and I quote "we will not allow Tyler1 to hold a League of Legends account, indefinitely."

So tyler1 was banned INDEFINITELY... so does this mean he may be unbanned in the future?

Which is it? Is indefinite = permanent, or not?

Make up your minds.

Indefinitely is basically saying until they change their mind, which could be soon, or never. Who knows which it could be.

Accounts are permanently banned, players are indefinably banned.

That's why a Riot staffer needs to clear this confusion up. Jensen was "indefinitely" banned (the player) from pro play -- his account was permabanned.

tyler1 according to what I read, the player, was "indefinitely" banned from League play -- ALL his accounts are permabanned on sight.

So if Jensen can reform and get unbanned (and get a new account) for LCS, isn't it possible then that tyler1 can get unbanned one day on an account?

Okay, let's first talk about the general case: Indefinite ultimately just means that something has no defined ending point. Permanently lasting things technically don't have a defined ending point (as they don't have one at all), so you could argue that everything that is permanent, is also automatically indefinite. But if something doesn't have a defined ending point doesn't automatically mean that it will never end, especially when human choice is involved. So typically when "indefinite" is used, the idea is: It might end, it might not, currently we don't know.

Now let's talk specifics: If I'm not mistaken Riot does revisit indefinite bans sometimes (not like there are a lot of them) and then decides whether or not to keep a certain ban in place. So yes, technically speaking he might be unbanned in the future. He also might not be. Currently we don't know.

Phreak stated on stream that Tyler1 can be unbanned. Having the possibility to do so doesnt mean you have to do it though. The US could end the world with their atomic bombs, but they dont. same for riot and tyler1
