I post on how moderators moderate and suicide prevention

An open dialogue on how people in positions of power allow suicide to happen, i think is needed. I'm going to put a few points out then discuss.

  1. Many people in league tell other players to KYS or kill yourself.
  2. Pro players and streamers say it and think its funny.
  3. Jokes are made to minimize what is occurring. (its not kill its kiss)
  4. Suicide is a SEROUS issue.
  5. Riot has failed to address a SEROUS problem.
  6. Riot's moderators appear completely inept in how to handle a possible suicide situation.
  7. I am not suicidal; simply looking out for young LoL players who have to endure the worst community to play a game.

A few days ago I posted a topic asking riot if they thought I should kill myself because I haven't received any notification that the people i report who tell me to kill myself have been banned. With many options for a response Riot decides the best course for action is to DELETE my post and send me a generic copy and paste message with a few links to self help. I reposed, and riot deleted my post and locked me from the boards.

anyone who has received ANY suicide prevention training know that if a person appears suicidal the absolute worst thing to do is to push them away and leave them by themselves. This is exactly what riot moderators did. Its an awful response. Someone at riot took an action to delete my post, but nobody at riot could reply to my question and say "no don't kill yourself" or "no".

Riot's moderation team really needs to figure it out. I would be a real tragedy is someone did kill themselves over the toxic league experience. Riot needs to clean up the game, or figure out how to handle people in need better, or anything. What we have now is a recipe for disaster that riot has enabled.

I suggest:

  1. moderators learn how to handle these situations better on the forums.
  2. create a button to disable all messaging from the game. pregame, ingame, postgame, and client chat.
  3. remove players from chat/ the game who tell players to kill themselves.
  4. make it a part of terms to professional players who compete in LOL events they can not tell people to or joke about suicide in league related internet media or content.

The League boards really aren't a good place to talk about suicide; the subject is far too slippery to traverse at times. Moderation has very strict guidelines on how to approach the subject, which may be something along the lines of removing the post, and if there is concern about a player's safety (not simply discussing the subject) they can be directed to official sources properly trained to help them, and if necessary the local authorities can also be contacted. Rioters and moderators are not properly equipped to help out a player in need in this regard, but there are resources available which can be provided.

As for removing the players that make threats and offensive jokes in this regard, they are already banned for this sort of behavior. Telling someone to kill themselves is taken very seriously and is one of the easiest ways to be escalated multiple tiers to a 14 day or permanent ban. The pros are typically held to a higher standard and can actually be penalized for extremely toxic behavior off the stage that reflects poorly on Riot.

If you want resources to provide to those players in need, please head over to these where they really know how to help;

I guess the bigger issue is: what do we do when anyone makes it clear they're going to carry out violence towards themselves or another? I'd really want that to be assessed and handled appropriately as quickly as possible.

They are under no obligation to. I know that's frustrating to hear, but, legally, you do not have a right to find out the punishments that someone else's account may or may not be under. That said, Riot DOES have a history of banning for death threats.

anyone who has received ANY suicide prevention training know that if a person appears suicidal the absolute worst thing to do is to push them away and leave them by themselves.

Not every organization has the means to do this. I assure you that if someone threatens you with death at a McDonalds, McDonalds will NOT have a policy of offering therapy and suicide prevention techniques. They will most likely tell you to see professional help elsewhere.

This is exactly what riot moderators did. Its an awful response. Someone at riot took an action to delete my post, but nobody at riot could reply to my question

The moderation staff is not Riot. I am also certain that, if they DID feel that you were serious in your post, they would have alerted someone.

Riot needs to clean up the game, or figure out how to handle people in need better, or anything. What we have now is a recipe for disaster that riot has enabled.

Riot does better at this than most companies out there: many do not even HAVE punishment systems.

  1. remove players from chat/ the game who tell players to kill themselves.

They do. Pretty quickly, actually.

suicide prevention requires the victim contacting riot support, permabanning a player who told someone "kys" in a game of league of legends has nothing to do with suicide prevention.

Generalities woooooo 1- maybe a few say it 2- maybe a few say it 3- few buy it 4- Who said it isnt? 5- Is a moderator meant to call the cops on everyone? 6- Good on you, but be careful to not be overprotective to the point you cushion the entire game to where we stop calling K/D/A ( Kill/death/assist )

Riot is not a therapy unit, they do not generate money from aiming to help/treat a users problems.

1- ehh 2- /muteall mutes all chat interfaces aside from a users 3- The system does? 4- They do? You can not ask riot to moderate 35000 streamers daily, if you see a problem open a ticket on the streaming site. Input the information, and flag them for review. 4.1- Streamers are not riot employees, as such they have a certain amount of freedoms that they can use to attract or maintain a audience

if you are triggered by kys chats, you are triggered already.

seeing others get banned won't untrigger you.

So the premise of this entire post is: Someone said kys to someone and they might actually kill themselves?

I am absolutely certain, I guarantee it, that nobody ever in the history of League of Legends actually killed themselves because a stranger in an online video game told them to do so ...

Stop taking offence to what people say to you on the internet, jeez. WE GET IT, IT'S WRONG, AND IT'S FLAGGED IN THE SYSTEM. Stop coming on these boards to complain about issues they're already solving.

Attempting to go into suicide prevention is not something Riot should handle.

Not only is there no duty to make sure League players do not commit suicide, attempting to intervene is a huge liability that they shouldn't take on especially considering they're not trained professionals.

There is no duty or obligation for Riot to train their employees in suicide prevention and they shouldn't have to.
