Community Policing

Cats Are Food·12/13/2018, 1:36:09 PM·2 votes·2,063 views

Let me just start by opening with the fact that I'm not currently banned, suspended, chat restricted, etc. I've been chat restricted twice, ever, and that's been about it. Those all took place quite some time ago as well. I've played League of Legends since the day of Open Beta, due to having missed my chance at getting into closed. I take long breaks at a time from the game, mostly because the community gets to me.

All of that said - League of Legends has the worst policed community in all of gaming.

Players, basically, handle all in game issues via a report system, a system that has been problematic since it's inception. What this generally leads to are the trolls, toxic players, and griefers winning out over those players who get tired of them. I've watched for the past few years as, more and more, people are banned left and right for finally fighting back against endless harassment from other players. I even got curious for awhile, and started checking these threads a few times a week, and most often, the opinion of the PLAYER BASE... not even the enforcement division... but the Players themselves fall on these lines:

"Well, you have no right to stand up for yourself, because that makes YOU the toxic one, no matter what someone is doing in the game."

What did I find while looking through these threads? 60% of the time the banned, complaining player lost their cool against someone harassing them and was banned for it. The players -doing- the actual griefing, chat harassment, etc? Generally still playing. That's what the idiot gets for being in the queue solo I guess.

Maybe it's the generation gap? But fuck you. Honestly. If Players are responsible for the actions of other players in the game, you don't get to tell other people to just "sit down and soak it up pansy." People should not be forced to play their games in silence, just because part of the playerbase thinks that it's more fun to pretend to be in bot games, or will only play with a group. The vast majority of this game are solo.

Games with, or had, better policing, that I've personally played? TERA CoD Black Desert Everquest Everquest 2 Runescape Rapplez War Craft 3 WoW Starcraft Starcraft 2 Forsaken World Perfect World Jade Dynasty Twelve Sky 10th Kingdom Villagers and Heroes Neverwinter Skyforge EVE Online Anarchy Online ExSteel Planetside Planetside 2 and most friggen Minecraft servers.

There is absolutely no excuse for the sheer level of Toxicity in this game. If I didn't absolutely love the GAME itself, I'd have honestly been gone a long time ago, but I also shouldn't have to mute my chat, pings, and emotes every game or two just so I can enjoy my gaming.

It's not sit down and soak it up pansy.

It's "don't get in a shouting match with the person because they don't work."

If some rando is flaming you, you can reasonably talk back. "Hey, I'm doing my best here, having trouble today, we'll win this" is a fine response and will hopefully defuse the situation.

Saying "hey, fuck you, you suck more" will not put the other person in their place, but will make them more angry and likely to flame further.

It works that way in real life too.

But these people whom are claiming self defense is just flaming others back.

That's a counter attack, not defense.

the opinion of the PLAYER BASE... not even the enforcement division... but the Players themselves fall on these lines:

"Well, you have no right to stand up for yourself, because that makes YOU the toxic one, no matter what someone is doing in the game."

That's a pretty big misconception, and a short-sighted one at that.

The cases you're talking about are people punished for retaliation - they claim they're "defending themselves", when in reality, all they're doing is flaming someone. Sometimes they start the flaming, other times they're flaming back, but the end result is the same; they're just flaming.

And the opinion of the playerbase isn't that players have no right to stand up for themselves, or that flaming makes them exclusively "the toxic one", but that fighting fire with fire accomplishes nothing.

Players can stand up for themselves by muting players who are irritating them in chat, and reporting players for breaking the rules post-game.

Flaming people accomplishes nothing, and if they're flaming a troll or intentional feeder, then they're letting the troll/feeder win.

It's Internet 101 - "Don't feed the trolls."

If someone is trolling, feeding, etc, giving them a reaction is only giving them what they want - and further giving them more reason to keep trolling and feeding and whatever else.

Flaming a person, no matter what they're doing - whether it's playing poorly, trolling, feeding, etc. - isn't going to magically make them stop. It's going to make poor players play worse, it's gonna make trolls troll more, and it's gonna make feeders feed harder.

And it's also going to result in the flamer getting punished, when they could've avoided it all by biting their tongue and not being another bad player ruining the game for everyone.

Lol. RuneScape better policing.

Yet players are allowed to scam noobs into losing all their items, or just flat out steal them. Where players can go to a Skilling area with 10 other "players" there and there's an over half chance they're all bots.

If you actually think that has better policing than League, your thread is invalid.

two wrongs dont make a right its a simple concept, sure you can "defend yourself" (which you can do by just muting them and reporting them after game) but do you know whats worse than one keyboard warrior ruining a match for everyone else? TWO OF THEM all it boils down to is having another toxic player

You’re not allowed to be toxic. Regardless of what justification you think you may have. It’s a pretty succinct system IMO.

Haaaaaaaaa, Exteel, what a classic! Wish that didn't go down, wish I still had my character from DFO, nostalgic for classic Cosmic Break, and I wonder how rich I am in Atlantica Online...

People who get banned, I just don't get it. It's so easy to get away with stuff in league. I have never been banned, chat restricted, or anything except low queue, which I get all the time. All you have to do is not say anything in chat. That's it. If you can't handle people talking shit, the mute button is there. If you got stuck with a shit team. The next game will still be there. So simple. People who get banned make me laugh.
