So apparently calling people "boomer" is toxic?

IØIØI·11/30/2019, 7:57:18 AM·9 votes·4,866 views

This is the chat log, that I got a 25 game chat restriction for. Calling a boomer and taunting people is apparently too toxic for the community nowadays? I am confused as to the reasoning for this ban. Is banter just not allowed these days? Am I not allowed to respond to the enemy who is constantly taunting me with insults? Because using the word "boomer" is just way too toxic I guess. omegalulTeemo Chat log below:

First off, you're only showing Game 3. That implies you have at least two other games that contributed to the punishment.

Second, it's pretty damn obvious that you were trying to annoy and piss someone else off in chat. I can see why this game contributed to the punishment.

More the fact you talked shit all game.

Also, post screenshots. Literally you cutpaste starts with “Game 3” - why are you hiding Game 1 & 2 that also triggered the ban?

its funny you focus on the "ok boomer" part and not all the other passive aggressive comments.

nothing nice to say? dont say anything at all.

Remember Tristana's canon is also named Boomer

I mean...deserved. U were provoking and laughing at them, which is considered to be, lets call it - "toxic" and it looks like u were spamming a little bit. Im sure u havn't been banned for "boomer", but for the rest. It's just chat restriction tho. Take a lesson from this one :)

Probably the "gg ez" at the end of the game might triggered the punishment. I know, riot's ban system is trash but i dont think that the word "boomer" is considered toxic enough to trigger a chat restriction lmao

So, it has come to this: someone displayed misbehavior in a LoL match in flagrant disregard for the game's rules, ToS, EULA, and Summoner's Code. That's unfortunate, and I'm sorry you had to deal with it. If this misbehavior happened in chat (including emotes or ping) and they don't respond positively to a single, courteous, constructive request to focus on the game, your best option is to mute that player. Submit a report after the match. This is equivalent to dealing with a noisy person in a library by asking them to keep it down and then notifying library staff and moving to another area.

Do not respond with misbehavior of your own! If you do that, your teammates may report you, and those reports would be valid. This is equivalent to dealing with a noisy person in a library by getting into a shouting match with them. Just because someone else started it doesn't justify you in continuing it. I'm sure you're familiar with the "s/he started it" trope, where two children get into an argument or fight and then try to claim innocence of any wrongdoing by claiming that they didn't instigate it. As any parent, teacher, or other supervisor of children will tell you, that excuse doesn't fly. When Dad is trying to drive you to Disneyland and your annoying brother starts making faces at you as he's previously been told not to, you should calmly ask him to stop, and then, if that doesn't work, calmly notify your parents of the problem. Making faces at him or shouting at him has never been a good way to get him to stop, and it makes you just as guilty of that as he.

Riot doesn't care who started it. Someone else's misbehavior does not justify your own.

From Riot's support knowledgebase:

  • Simply speaking, retaliation is not an acceptable or justifiable behavior. An argument between two players can easily create a negative experience for the rest of the players in the game with you. Regardless of the other player’s actions, this does not justify your own behavior. You alone are responsible for your actions within the game.If you encounter a toxic player like this, the best option is to simply report their behavior and move on.
  • Reports are a vital piece to the puzzle. If you are not sure of what sort of behavior is reportable take a look at the Reporting a Player FAQ

If you misbehave but a teammate or opponent does or says something even worse, you should definitely report them after the match, just as someone reported you for your own misbehavior. Yes, that's certainly possible. Reports are not a limited resource. Any time someone believes that another player violated LoL's behavioral standards, they can report that player. Punishments are similarly not limited: if more than one player in a game merits a punishment, they can both get a punishment. This can happen even if the players in question were antagonizing each other. The IFS doesn't need to weigh the severity of all reported players' actions and then "award" the "winner" with a punishment; it's not a contest.

Think of it like dealing with a noisy person in a library: ask them to keep it down, and then notify library staff and move to another area if that doesn't work. If you get into a shouting match with them, you're just as likely to be removed, even if you weren't shouting quite as loudly as they were. The goal is a quiet library.

I’d guess that using the same word too many times constitutes spamming. The machine probably picked up on your excessive use of the term “boomer” and banned you for it. Just a guess, though.

Game 3

Sometimes chatlogs provided are poor examples; that especially happens when you're not heavily toxic on any game but you're slightly toxic quite often and it piles up to the breaking point.

These logs aren't super toxic, but they're not clean either, that's not banter anymore once it's settled the other guy is taking it seriously and you push it further for the sole purpose of triggering him even more. Most people just want to play without having to deal with this kind of interaction, taunting is legit if you find someone who accepts it and/or answers to it without being upset, but overall if nobody's in the mood for a verbal joust, a soothing attitude is recommended, so everyone can spend a good time. I understand banter spices it up, but that's not a prerequisite to entertainment and everybody can enjoy the game without that, so you should try to keep it for the persons who will consent having that extra fun.

Sirsir11/30/2019, 1:09:49 PM3 votes

Its not about what you said its about how often you said it.

Bye boomer. See you in 25 days

The Highest Noon11/30/2019, 1:20:44 PM2 votes

Using a term as an insult is toxic, yes.

Farih Danh11/30/2019, 11:58:54 AM2 votes

You were banned for unsportmanlike. Saying "gg ez" is unsportmanlike which triggered the system and its obvious you trying to piss off someone else in chat. Also you only showed us Game 3? What happened to Game 1 & 2 chatlogs?

JustA kleo11/30/2019, 1:41:37 PM2 votes

wtf is this boomer meme suddenly? are you guys talking about the fat puking guy from left4dead?

Sukishoo11/30/2019, 2:33:46 PM2 votes

Repeatedly saying something over and over does trigger the system to learn that it is probably something others don't want in the game once reported.

Also considering this says

Game 3

They had to have shown more than just that.

ModPeriscope11/30/2019, 6:47:01 PM2 votes

They're typically showed in order of severity, so it's not surprising that this log has mild insults compared to your other logs.

This is the chat log, that I got a 25 game chat restriction for.

You got a chat restriction because of your behavior over 3 games that has not significantly changed following your previous punishment.

The next step is a 2-week suspension if you do not change your behavior.

Thiadel12/1/2019, 8:46:03 AM2 votes

Your issue is that this isn't friendly banter. The phrase "OK Boomer" has turned into a negative connotation for some people and the full reasoning behind a full generation's grudge against their previous generation. This is most certainly a toxic phrase, let's be real. If you're legitimately saying this phrase in game, you're meaning to cause harm in some fashion.

Let alone the fact that, as someone else pointed out, you have two other games that you have conveniently not posted. This game alone is not the reason you were given the restriction, but it certainly didn't help. You're focusing on the "OK Boomer" phrase and not the continued toxicity throughout the game. There comes a point where the above chat log is meant maliciously and not as "Friendly Banter."

Main Point -- You've done a lot more than you're letting the boards know about and this was just one of the final straws that your terrible attitude finally resulted in punishment as seen with "Game 3" in your very own original post. Post the other two logs. I'm sure that we can plainly see that it was not the phrase "OK Boomer" that resulted in the ban as you seem to believe.
