Honor, not Game Play

The honor system has been a long forgotten tool in the game we so love to play. There are many issues with the new process that Riot is working on that I would like to point out. The focus on a rewarding single players in a match is not an acceptable judgment in a team game. Rewarding players for honor will create a division among the teams before and after the games. Having a post game screen that shows the results of the judgement from the team will never do anything but create a negative experience. Not rewarding any of the eight other players involved in the team creates a mind set that they missed out on something that they never had a chance at receiving. Honor will be saved for pre made teams of two or more. Solo players will have a negligible chance at receiving honor unless they are playing out of their ELO or carry the game so hard that their teammates, might, decide to honor them. Single player rewards in a team game create currency. That currency will be passed between friends that play together. There would be no reason to be unselfish and honor a player you do not have to see everyday in person. This is a glaring reality and I'm pretty sure no one will disagree that honoring your friend over someone you have never met will become common practice. Not to mention it will protect players from negative feedback, deserved or not. This currency will also be used as a way to control people in game. Friendly words such as, "If you lose this dragon, I will give you negative honor....fill in the blank" will make the system less attractive and not used as intended. The other side is, the people getting honored will be getting rewarded because they are friends and not judged by the rest of the team. Rewarding single players creates a judgement that will resonate throughout the matches. No one will want to sit through the end of the matches at all anymore. Not that there was a reason anyways, except to look at stats, or watch someone implode because, "someone is trolling". Way to add ammo with the honor system. The beginning of the match will show clan tags, or the fact that people are chatting, and this will push people to believe that they are ineligible for honor before the match even starts. Personally, I have been in matches where I was the only solo player and got blasted repeatedly for small mistakes from the beginning of the match by the pre made group. Everyone can relate I believe, this isn't too far of a stretch. Only now with rewards, I am missing out on receiving anything because I was not part of the group no matter how I play. It was decided that their group is going to get the honor before the match even started. The judgement is fierce because the teams only get ONE vote per person. That judgement will be different in a fair vote. This is League of Legends. Also, if anyone on the other team is being toxic, and you follow what RIOT wants you to do, which is don't get involved and mute everyone right?, you won't have a chance at any rewards and will probably get negative honor for not communicating. The post game screen is usually reserved for finishing the trash talk that was started 25 minutes ago. The last thing we need to add is the discussion why no one voted for the ADC that went 25-10, but the Top lane held down every team fight and was voted as such. The judgement could be solid, but the dissension created only adds to the negativity in the game and makes the final screen even less useful.

Here is my fix. Cause I'm trying to complain less and be constructive more. ( I have RL issues I deal with everyday )

The new system is based on Game play. Even in the video released by Riot that is hosted by New001, love that guy, great hosting on the video, his examples all included game play calls, or plays. Honor is not about Game play.

Honor should be based on individual honor. The measurement is easy and the focus should remain on the player. You can keep the currency idea, but reward players for providing positive responses to their teammates and their competitors. When you sit down at the end of the match, you, as a player, should make a choice. Honor positively to whom ever you wish on either team. Even add a small box for a comment (if you get flamed, pass that along to player behavior and moderation). If you decide to Honor negatively, then you lose from your positive responses. Make the negative outweigh the positive. If you decide to not honor, make it degrade the positive honors over time. This does three things. -It will hold the player directly responsible for their actions. It was their decision, clearly, to be a part of the honor process and makes them eligible for rewards. Having a small box to say why I gave you positive honor would be awesome! -The point system, lets say 1 point for every positive honor and -5 for every negative honor would really make you think about pressing that button. Which means Players would have to have a REAL reason to press it or face losing out on RIOT rewards. If you get below a certain amount, lets say going below zero points, you lose the ability to Type in chat during games, Honor negatively, and generally be grumpy all day, everyday until you reform a bit to get back up to a positive number. You should also have a percentage discount for positive honor after dropping below zero so toxic players don't drop below zero and play 5 games to get back up in the same day. The only person they would have to blame is themselves. This form of self policing would cut down on account bans because players couldn't disagree that they didn't see their ban coming. You can see the effect of your attitude on yourself. -If you do not partake in the honor system regularly, that is fine. At the end of the week, there should be a small degradation toward rewards because you aren't working towards making a positive community. It should not be massive. There are many reasons why you can't play a free to play game in your life. You shouldn't pay for it immensely.

If you think about it, it takes far longer to be mad at someone, it takes more energy, and it takes away from everyone's game play by creating a negative environment. I enjoy the improvements that Riot is attempting at the Honor system. I believe the way they have currently introduced the new honor system has made honor a currency, instead of a self judgement of honor. Honor is the truest form of judgment that anyone can put on themselves, it is what the system should be about, not game play.

Happy farming, and check your Masteries!! DrMundo

Great idea, just have to make it able to be checked by Riot. This would prevent the person who does not say anything in chat all game from getting 2 or 3 negative votes from a pre-made, thus punished for it with the negative 10-15 honor, because they like to troll. Obviously you are use to the community and you know this would happen. This is always what makes honoring good behavior and punishing poor behavior prob tough for Riot. Just would hate to see a positive person lose their attitude because of the trolls we have out there that think this is cute. You know they are out there.

I am little confused about your system suggestion. Especially this part in which you said: "If you decide to Honor negatively, then you lose from your positive responses. Make the negative outweigh the positive. If you decide to not honor, make it degrade the positive honors over time."

So if there is a troll/inter on the match and a person who would like to "gain" honor, he could not report the troll/inter or he would lose any honor he had gained in the last 5 games or so? I hope I misunderstood your system, but if it works like I understood, we will end up with trolls trying to provoke people to report them and either people will not report them because they lose honor and the troll can continue trolling, or they will be report them and lose honor for reporting that troll. That does not sound too functional to me. Did I misunderstand that part?

Also, you say that the new system is based on "Game play". We are playing a game here. What else is there to base it on? I am not going to start talking about philosophy while I am trying to win the match, so I am interested to find out on what other factor can you base game "Honor" on?

In my opinion the new Riot system sounds promising. Not giving up might get you "Stayed cool.", positive team spirit raising player would gain "GG" and well, the last one I find little iffy. I think Honor is part of behavior and this award is actually about tactical sense. That isn't behavior and thus isn't "Honor" in my eyes. However even though "Great Shotcalling" isn't actual honor in my eyes, it is still telling the honored person that someone from the team respect(ed) his tactical sense and I can see that as a worthwhile "Honor" in the system.
