Why is Offensive Language even an option to report?

With the recent addition of being able to see when you are getting reported, and what for, I realized that I'm getting reported for offensive language because I've said some cuss words in chat while playing. No, I'm not racist, so I'm not getting reported for that, but for saying your average cuss words.

Tell me, Riot, why with Chat Filters and a mute function, is there still a reason you are giving people to report for this? If they are really "offended" by it (let's be real here, we've all seen the community) there are measures in place to take yourself out of it. I'll be damned if I drop more cash on this game (already over the $1200 mark) if I can be banned because some kids want to report me for offensive language.

You might want to take another look at your reporting metrics, and see what's going on.

The amount of money you spend has nothing to do with behavioral systems; a player that has spent thousands of dollars is treated exactly like someone who hasn't spent anything.

I'm getting reported for offensive language because I've said some cuss words in chat while playing.

Context matters far more than the specific words being used. Reports for offensive language in a vacuum are relatively meaningless, but if there's intent behind the words it becomes much more serious. For example:

  • "Shit, I died again"
  • "You're such a piece of shit"

See the difference? The first is somewhat benign and doesn't have the intent to demean another player, whereas the second does. Comments along the lines of the second bullet point there aren't acceptable by the vast majority of the community, and I suspect that's where the bulk of your reports are coming from.

Swearing in and of itself is not reportable. Saying "fuck I missed my Taric stun" is alright, saying things like "Lux you fucking suck" is not.

If you are just getting those popup warning messages, they are just there to remind you keep your cool and try not to do that again. If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.

Explain more how much you've spent on this game.

Because its in the terms of use you've agreed to EVERY SINGLE TIME A NEW PATCH COMES OUT. Seriously, if you're going to spend $1200 of a freaking video game you'd think you would spend 10 minutes to read the terms of use. You're probably one of those idiots who signs up for a new credit card or a car loan without reading the terms and conditions too.

Because Riot has decided they want both.

As far as I know nothing has changed with the warning system in a long time. So if you weren't getting them before and are getting them now its probably because you are getting reported more than you used to for w/e reason. Warnings are triggered by a spike in getting reported and this isn't anything new. It happens before reports get validated so they don't necisiarily mean anything. Reports go through a validation process before being used for punishments though.

Riot on mute:

{quoted}

We consider the "Mute" feature to be a last resort. When a player has to use the "Mute" feature, the damage has already been done. Your experience is already worse, you are already less likely to play another game, and you already don't enjoy League as much as before. The "Mute" feature is a last resort to prevent any further harassment or abuse. Just because a feature like this exists doesn't mean it's OK for players to spew hate speech or be racist or verbally abusive. The vast majority of players in League hate these types of behaviors, and we should respect these players and not tell toxic players it's OK to be dicks just because a "Mute" feature exists.

A very good rule to go by. If it is unnecessary, just don't. People will report for everything possible. I'm not saying people reporting is a bad thing, but a person's sensitivity increases ten fold when they sit down on a computer (totally legit statistic).

If you really can't distinguish between these two categories, your imagination is severely lacking.
