Can We Get Some Griefer Awareness?

I played my first game of League today (not my FIRST game, but first of the day) and queued for Twisted Treeline. Champ select went by pretty much as expected. For the first ~15 minutes of the match, our Sejuani was polite, nice, and had a decent attitude. Admittingly, she wasn't good, but I was willing to overlook it since we were comfortably winning.

Then a teamfight around 18 minutes sprouted up. She refused to engage, even with full health + mana, all of our ults, and exposed enemies (their Malph was NOT good, but that's besides the point). I attempted to engage in her place (I was Brand) and got killed. She typed in chat "...Why would you go? Are you stupid?" I replied "You weren't engaging a free teamfight, so I went in your place since you're inept." (Yes, I admit I should have just kept my cool and said "you're right, my bad.") She replied with "have fun" and trolled for almost a full 20 minutes. Running around in the Fog-of-War spamming emotes, recalls, not capturing objectives, not clearing jungle, doing NOTHING at all.

I asked the enemy team to report her (Not unreasonable at all since she was clearly griefing) and was met with "Nice throw" from the enemy Ashe. The game went on for 36 minutes and we won because the Sejuani finally decided to stop trolling for 2 minutes and we won a flawless teamfight.

Here's the match link: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2041712332/215695406

Do NOT be fooled by the Sejuani's KDA (8/2/6), she died twice in the first 10-15 minutes and never died again in the game.

I'm not asking anyone to report her or anything. No. I'm just trying to raise awareness that griefing/trolling is still an unsolved issue in League of Legends that Riot NEEDS to address. Currently, ONE person trolling is all it takes in ANY mode to instantly lose you a game. Griefers and trolls have too much power, including in Champion Select. No amount of "Lyte says..." can convince me that the issue is contained/not an issue, because it IS, it's real, and it's slowly destroying my League of Legends experience to its core.

When I was still new to League, the first thing I thought when starting a match is "This is gonna be awesome! We're gonna have so much fun and it's gonna be a good time!"

Now, my first thought is "Alright, which one of you is gonna be the guy that ruins everything and/or is extremely toxic?"

It's really sad how negative League has turned me and how aggressive in negativity I can be due to so many bad experiences. I hope nobody hoping to start this game has to deal with the BS I had to, and still do, go through.

Ugh, always sucks to hear about these poor experiences for players. I face these sorts of things all the time as well, so maybe some of these tips I try to use might help you out as well:

  • Don't assume people are messing up on purpose. Very often, when someone doesn't do something I expected/hoped they would do, it's just because they did not know to do it. In fact, I'm frequently that person (っ- ‸ – ς)

  • Remember not everyone plays as well as you do. In a game like LoL that involves quick thinking, an understanding of so many different champions and abilities, map awareness, communication... it's easy for something to go wrong.

  • Use constructive feedback. Not criticism. Whenever someone says stuff like "wtf" or "???" or "you're stupid," I like to remind them that their saying that does absolutely 0 to help the team, and letting us know what was so surprising/upsetting would be more beneficial. I know chatting is difficult during a game, but I mean if you're dead anyway [kekeke], go ahead and take a few seconds to explain what could have gone better. "Woops, totally thought you were gonna lead the charge there, Sej. Next time let's all go in together." I always honor teammates as 'Helpful' when they take the time to coach others.

  • Breeeaaathe. If you find yourself in these unpleasant situations, take a couple of breaths first before reacting to them. My first impulse is almost always to yell and/or use sarcasm, but that's not gonna get us anywhere XD So breathe. Then say something constructive! Or don't say anything at all.

  • Take a break. Walk away from the game for a bit. It's okay, I swerz. Nobody wants you to become aggressively negative!

It's hard to be the bigger person. I know. It's not fair. But just as you are playing with the absolutely adorable thought of "This is gonna be awesome! We're gonna have so much fun and it's gonna be a good time!", many others are as well. Keeping yourself calm and positive is the best thing for maintaining that, even if others won't.

[merr, apologies, this post became a lot longer than I intended]

Two things you did are reportable: Retaliating to a troll & typing in all chat asking others to report a player

Instantly muting Sej would have solved your problems in that match.

Talking about trolls that grief, I had to deal with a Tahm that today that would prevent me from getting kills by devouring me, and at the same time he'd throw me into their team 1v5 to die several times. And the thing is It's really hard to consistently have to keep track of when your teammate is trying to get you killed. It's really fricking hard.

@GRRRLEEE could you look into making it so that players who have to deal with a troll tahm can press some sort of button like a mute button to make it so he can't devour them any longer. Because this is honestly very aggravating.

I think it was Tantrum that said Riot was hesitate to add a player block system because it would interfere with the match making system and we'd all be in queue longer. I would agree with this. But at the same time, I understand the frustration at having to play once again with a jerk who made me want to surrender just to get away from them.

This is the most glaring failure of Riot's behavior system. If someone says something negative (which is easily resolved by muting that person) then there are automated systems in place to rapidly restrict or ban that player from the game. But if they deliberately play like garbage, and never make textual reference to it, then they are completely immune to punishment. This latter type of behavior is something players cannot resolve on their own by simply muting, so we need Riot to do something for us to fix it. And yet, they've taken no steps towards addressing this problem, and simply pat themselves on the back for ever more efficiently banning players based on what they type, which is absolutely useless.
