Ban procedures

So its always been an issue that I've had and I know many people feel the same way as me. I am not bashing Riot because it is there game and I know and understand that they can do whatever they way. My issue is what is really the banning process. Yes I agree being toxic is an issue in all games that involve 2 or more people but what is the correct way to go about punishing and trying to convert those who are negative into responsible players? Do you swing the ban hammer instantly, do you let it continue throwing a chat or time ban out here and there, or just let it sort it out itself. Riot has gone threw multiple stages and procedures to try and change the player base and with all efforts, still continues to be an issue. For the longest time the tribunal was around (and correct me if I'm wrong) consisted of a community that would review tickets about players or someone's punishment and decide if consequences needed to be enforced or removed. The issue being is Bronze (the most populated section of league by far) seems to be getting shoved aside while the negativity has been allowed to flourish or even grow without being watched until all hell breaks loose. I was perma banned after 1 two week suspension after 2 years of no punishment, while those who were just as toxic or better yet started the provocation are allowed to continue to play and ruin others game play when I attempt to play and win. The hardest thing about League is that soo many people just give up and throw the game in at the first sign of a loss and yes I will say pisses me off because I put time and effort learning mechanics and strategy into fine tuning my game play and even money because I enjoy the effort riot puts into making skins for their game. Why am I punished not only for being in a game where there are multiple trolls but when I try to voice my opinion to my team or enemies and they get honored for no reason. Riot needs to not let automated systems do the job to monitor the games because it seems only those that get reported by a certain amount of people are punished...even if that one person did nothing but defend themselves.

Punishments are done by escalating through 4 tiers;

  • 10 game chat restriction
  • 25 game chat restriction
  • 14 day account ban
  • Permanent account ban

Players that exhibit extremely toxic behavior, such as for using hate speech or urging someone to harm themselves, may be escalated multiple tiers. Otherwise you typically move up one step at a time, moving to the next punishment if you continue showing negative behavior. Gameplay offenses, such as intentional feeding, do not get chat restrictions; they move to the account ban steps.

You may decay punishment tiers as you play games and show reform, but if you continue being toxic immediately after a punishment it's going to be easy to get punished again with the next step.

If you are normally a well behaved player, a little bit of minor toxicity once in a while won't get you punished. Basically, punishments are decided by a combination of both severity and frequently of your negative behavior. This is why one player may not be punished for doing the same thing another did; the first one probably has a more positive record of behavior than the one that received a restriction.

Since you brought up "defending yourself", it's also a good idea to let you know that lashing out against a toxic player with more toxic behavior isn't "defending" anyone. "Defending" implies you're mitigating or preventing the behavior; doing the same thing back to them tend to do the opposite, making it worse and ensuring the toxic environment is perpetuated. Your defense is the Mute button, and reporting them at the end of the match helps to prevent that player from being toxic in future games. Giving them an ear full doesn't teach them anything, but most players that receive a punishment improve and never have to be punished a second time.

I can understand where you are coming from, in thinking that it's almost unfair for the automated system to be making the judgments on players when it obviously isn't taking the context of the chat logs into consideration. But truthfully, it's that lack of context that makes the system more fair than any human-based Tribunal could ever be. All players are judged by the exact same standards. 100% equality. Every player is held accountable to the same rules. With the automated system, you will never have players being punished because the Tribunal reviewers saw something in a match that reminded them of something that happened in one of their own games and pissed them off. You will never have players repeatedly going unpunished because the reviewers thought they were funny, or going unpunished for months at a time because the Tribunal is hopelessly backlogged.

While this may not be the easiest thing to hear, I assure you I mean it as gently as possible. For many players who are only just now receiving their first punishment after years of playing League, it may not be that the automated system is too harsh and is now punishing players when they are not breaking the rules. It is more likely that they have been breaking the rules all along, but that the Tribunal and the old report/punishment system was too far behind to actually keep up and punish them for it. So they assumed that their behavior in the past was acceptable. When in fact, it was not.

you should post your chat logs. I'm pretty sure even without an automated system you'd get punished.
