A discussion on /mute all, and whether or not it's healthy for the game

Admit it. Weve all done it. Sure. It may prevent you from tilting or becoming toxic. But it's agonizingly frustrating for anyone trying to shotcall. Makes it so you could potentially miss information. And as a whole. Degrades the community. And imo. People at the very least shouldnt encourage it on the boards. Especially rioters or arbiters. Muting is a valuable tool to deal with negative players. However i feel muting all is unnecessary. And is killing the community. A solution i have. Is implement a timer on mute all. That can only be used after 5 minutes have passed. And restrict ping muting to after 10 minutes

I cannot support this as it would force players to tolerate abuse simply because time hasn't passed and they're unable to mute individually for time or focus reasons.

I'm bronze. Haven't done placements this year, but I'm bronze. I mute all for two reasons:

  1. An anti-tilt measure. I've had enough bad teams to know what can happen if something goes wrong. If I do something incredibly stupid I mute all to keep myself from obsessing over the chat and any potential flames. Doesn't matter if they're actually going to happen or not, they have happened in the past and that's enough to make me anxious. Mute all means that I can focus on not doing something that incredibly stupid again and not worry about what my team mates may be saying. Because mental health is fun.

  2. It's quicker than an individual mute when I'm busy focusing on the game. Someone needs to be muted and it's the fastest way to do it.

End of the day there is nothing someone can say in the chat that they can't convey with pings as far as shotcalling goes at my level.

So, from reading this and the OP's responses in one comment string, all I can really gather is something like this:

"Players should be forced/encouraged to suffer abuse because (reason not stated)".

With the alternative solution being "Eliminate chat completely - also because reasons".

Why exactly is /muteall and pingmuting such a problem? Why is chat such a problem? Sure, /muteall can potentially hurt players' shotcalling potential, but, really, who cares? I've seldom seen any good shotcallers out of the random players I've played with, and, honestly, if you're good at leading teams, why not strike up a premade?

As for players encouraging it - Rioters and Arbiters included - it's encouraged because some players haven't developed the level of restraint others have, and they genuinely want to reform and play the game, but without that built up willpower against retaliation, they need some safeguard to prevent themselves from slipping into counterflaming.

Enter /muteall. They don't have to deal with anyone else's shit, and they can play the game in peace. Best part, it works. So, why shouldn't it be encouraged, pray tell?

Beyond all that, though, you still haven't really elaborated well on how "/muteall is degrading/killing the community", nor have you provided any solid reasons for your proposed changes.

Forget that! I mute everyone’s pings, emotes and chat before I even leave the starting area. After 3 years I have yet to see anyone say anything of value in this game. And then there is the non stop MIA pimgs!

The only reason i /mute all every game, is because i dont trust Riot's ban system because ive been punished illegiteamitely before and if everyone's muted, i cant talk in chat therefor i wont have to leave my account's status up to a robot to decide.

Admit it. Weve all done it.

I haven't muted every player in a game once yet. I don't see the problem here.

Sure. It may prevent you from tilting or becoming toxic. But it's agonizingly frustrating for anyone trying to shotcall. Makes it so you could potentially miss information.

The problem here is "trying." There's a difference between trying to shotcall and actually shotcalling. A lot of times, and I've read a boat load of "trying to shotcall" where they devolve into being a whiney ***** because someone didn't follow up on their shotcalling and become excessively abusive with their "shotcalls." This degrades the community more than encouraging people to mute all so they aren't tempted to retaliate flame.

And as a whole. Degrades the community. And imo. People at the very least shouldnt encourage it on the boards. Especially rioters or arbiters.

Not sure why we shouldn't encourage people to do what they feel is necessary to reduce toxicity so that they may keep playing the game instead of getting permabanned for their bad behavior.

** Muting is a valuable tool to deal with negative players.**

At least I agree with you on this.

However i feel muting all is unnecessary. And is killing the community. A solution i have. Is implement a timer on mute all. That can only be used after 5 minutes have passed. And restrict ping muting to after 10 minutes.

I don't agree with this however. There's no reason anyone should have to listen to someone who's shown themselves to be toxic in champ select. Especially if people aren't willing to risk the dodge penalty for whatever queue they're in.

Hmmmmmmmmm......

If they start the game with /mute all, it is frustrating for the shot caller (normally me). It's good for people that are (or can be easily) tited, as I'd rather them focus on the game than to become keyboard warriors.

But if they are bad, then you typing to them wouldn't help. You know all those "help me" pings when you find the enemy jgler in the river, but the mid laner stays in mid lane farming, but then says after "sorry, I didn't see". Yeap, they are bad and certainly don't look at the mini-map enough.
