Are the innocent worth less than the guilty? Discussion about new waves of bans.
To preface, I want an honest discussion about the new bans happening and what can be done to make it a better system for everyone.
A permanent ban seems harsh when considering the circumstances. Cheating is a serious offense that is unfair to everyone else. I too would like to see them seriously punished but we can't overlook the innocent players who have only had a positive impact upon the game. The system isn't perfect and will sometimes mistakenly ban these good players and hopefully we can agree this is undesirable.
In order to combat this, why can't we have a severe warning that clearly sends the message cheating will not be tolerated coupled with a time suspension. Innocent players only have to wait an x amount of time or so until they can start playing again and hopefully not be wrongfully banned again. In addition to this, it gives the actual cheaters a chance to reform. I know it's an unpopular decision but these people are still people. Shouldn't they be given a second chance. If they fail, a permanent ban would be in order but if they do reform, they can become positive bright players we meet on a day to day basis in the League community.
In my opinion, this is the best balance between punishing the guilty and protecting the innocent. Everyone wants to stop cheating but we also don't want to wrongfully convict anyone. I feel Riot's system currently favors towards the punishing the guilt too much. I have no issue seeing toxic players and cheaters being removed from the system but we need to accept the fact the system isn't perfect. Chats are clear evidence of a player's toxicity yet we still see some mistakes. For toxic players, they are given multiple warnings and chances before being banned. Players have a chance to either show they were never toxic to begin with or they have since reformed. I feel this opportunity should be extended to cheating players especially considering the fact it is much harder to prove.
The issue still remains about Riot's response to the whole issue. Releasing evidence might impede future investigations. This may be true as no one knows the exact specifics but them. However, is the possibility of future cheaters getting away worse than punishing innocent players. It's a common moral question in the legal system. Is it better that 10 guilty men go free than one innocent man be wrongly convicted. Should the same apply in Riot's method of handling bans.
I know it's long so thank you for reading it all the way through. I'm looking forward to reading all your responses!
