Toxicity that brought me to tears.

I don't really post at all for stuff like this usually. But something really got to me today in this game. I stopped playing this game for a while and recently came back as stressors in my life have gotten larger and larger and I wanted something to focus on. I know some of you may call me stupid for choosing league for something to play when I'm already stressed. And you're probably right. But one of the biggest stresses lately has been my father being diagnosed with an aggressive case of early-onset Alzheimer's. He's very quickly becoming a different man from who I know, and it's hard for me to look him in the eyes much anymore.

So I chose to play league today because he had a bad night last night that made me want to distract myself. When I came into the game, I played badly, I know. I chose something weird, and just wanted to practice. Two players, however, a duo of players named "exoticPENTA" and "Sharpiedots" began being toxic towards me past the midway of the game. I should have muted them. But, I dunno. I tried to tell them I didn't get help from jungler when I needed it, and etc, etc. I mentioned I had a bad day and didn't want this sort of stuff. They laughed it off and kept being toxic. We lost the game.

In the after game chat, however, things got worse. Much worse. I wanted to describe to them that, while it may not feel like it, I'm a human being behind this keyboard, and I've been going through these issues with my dad and, maybe, they could think about stuff like that in the future rather than be toxic. That was a mistake, I guess. The toxicity got worse, eventually building to one of them joking about my father's alzheimers, as shown in the link.

Honestly, I'm not even sure fully why I'm posting this. Maybe my pain and tears can inspire one person reading to be more kind to those they come across online. This game is competitive, but know that we all struggle. Please be gentler with one another and bring goodness into the world.

  1. As the person in the previous comment said- why giving them the 'ammo' to insult you even more?
  2. Why do you think they care?
  3. They might even think you were lying and just made that story up as an excuse for your bad play (those kind of people exist, believe it or not)

And sorry bout your father.

I know this might sound harsh but don’t say stuff like “my grandfather was diagnosed with alzheimers”. By saying that the person flaming you knows for sure that they made you upset and that gives them more fuel to insult and flame you. I wold recommend you to stay so focused on how you are playing and pay attention to the game so you hopefully won’t see those provoking comments. That is if you think the person might actually get their shit together and type something useful in chat then do that, if not then just mute them.

I feel kinda the same way with you, I got super sick when I was a baby and nearly died. The doctors expected me to die but I stayed alive but I had a bunch of brain damage that resulted in ADHD (not that sure if I got ADHD from that, if I had it before or if I just have some of the same symptoms as ADHD). So it makes me sad and very disappointed when people use brain damage and ADHD to try and insult somebody (mainly me). But I have learned to ignore what they say and focus on myself playing the game.

Usually in a normal game and in champ select, I say in chat “I want to try something new” or “I am not good at this role” and end it with “so expect me to feed” or “so pls don’t flame if I feed” . After that I will say something like “but I will try my hardest to not feed of course”. That way I can hopefully make the people on my team know before hand that I am a possible weak link in the team and that I am out of my comfort zone with this role/champ. Most of the time people understand when they see this and they won’t flame, if they are instead the complete assholes that will flame you anyways then just ignore them and focus on pulling your weight.

Riot doesn't seem to really care about toxic players running rampant through the game. I come across the worst human beings on the planet and reporting them doesn't really seem to do anything. I miss the message that you got from Riot saying a recent player you have reported has been punished. That was such a great feeling.

Dude you have to blank out the summoner names, or it's against the rules of boards. The forums are not a place for public shaming, and I don't believe it's necessary to the conversation you want to have.

I'm sorry about your father! I hope that life will get better for both you and your Dad!

Firstly: Sorry man, but noone wants to hear your story while playing a video game. We all have shit happening in our lives and a video game lobby is not the place to talk about them.

Secondly: Don't play League if you want a stress-free time. Ever. Play other games.

Thirdly: Sorry about your dad, hang in there. I can't imagine what you're going through. God bless.
