How often would you say you encounter toxic chat vs toxic gameplay?

Here's an unpopular opinion: Most of the league community isn't toxic

Here's another: Most of the feeders in people's games are just playing bad. They're probably tilted and making mistakes they otherwise wouldn't.

I would say that I see a toxic player maybe 1 in 20 games and someone toxic enough to to bother to report even more rarely. I don't think I have had someone int or afk since preseason.

But that's just my opinion. Curious to hear others.

All the time, pretty much every game. usually on the losing team

BlackRoseNoble12/24/2019, 9:12:48 AM3 votes

I just posted a video in the rant section showing the 2 out of my last three games someone feeding then running it down my lane. 1 i was able to save, the other i lost. 1 was a promo game. Gameplay and chat is EXTREMELY common. i'd say theres about a 60% chance someone intentionally runs it down my lane unprovoked and a 95% chance someone will be toxic in chat on one team or the other. Wholeheartedly disagree that toxicity is not prevalent in this game.

YaraOwO12/23/2019, 6:20:51 PM3 votes

Toxic chat basically every game (i mean like actually flaming) toxic gameplay probably 1 every 5 games.

Granted im lvl 22. I generally get 2/3 IFRs a day. 2 days ago i got 5.

Arammus12/23/2019, 9:27:32 PM3 votes

i dont play ranked lately, so its actually that id say 40-50% of my games have toxic chat and less than 10% have toxic gameplay. but again aram only.

Yesterday I saw people tilt and start blowing summoners after surrender vote failed. Standing around allowing enemy to push etc. Recklessly diving towers etc. These were from gold and plat accounts with at least 100 collective mastery.. looked like main accounts.

Another example. I was in Aram and typed: guys prioritize the tower and not chasing for kills. Context was our team could have had an easy tower but instead we had bunch of people die chasing a kill and then we didn't get tower. I think a fair statement

After I was flamed pretty relentlessly and scapegoated. Turns out there was a duo (same clan tag) and after game they were saying how I flamed all game. This isn't really that rare. And I don't know what riot could do since this level of bullying won't trigger any automated bans. Also I'm sure I got reported by the group. So what do you do when you start to get berated. Stay quiet and take it otherwise you'll get banned. Even if you mute them many times I've witnessed people purposely soft int and throw the game. Like mentioned above, they'll make bad decisions far below their skill on purpose which allows the enemy to end.

This happened to me in 3 games that I played yesterday out of 10 or so. Again, these are established accounts. Not Smurf throw aways that toxic people use to let loose.

That's not including the multiple games where Master's diamond and even plat players will flame me for being gold and use that as the end all be all for any argument as well as a personal attack.

This being said, I do agree. Of course toxic players a minority, but for me it's not a 1 in 20 occurrence.

Grand Starfallin12/26/2019, 9:45:23 AM2 votes

No 1 would ever be toxic if riot would remove filthy non human inters from ranked . the few who just wanna be dicks just because will flame but no1 else. if we could all just get humans in ranked ive never been 0 and 5 in my life but every game some 1 on my team is and they 'had a bad game' . toxicity isn't a problem feeders are . And if ur not an emotional lil boy 'toxicity' don't bother u for me anyways as long as ur human and not feeding I don't care what u say .I play ranked to win games not care about what ppl say but cant win games when sum non human inting all game and when u deal with it enough every day that u do play eventually u gonna call a feeder a feeder just don't get it why they all so emotional just don't feed or don't play ranked no1 will say anything

Kjraider112/26/2019, 6:37:58 PM2 votes

I only really get upset in ranked. Lets say, our bot is 0-2 already, "Guys, can we play it safe, and just cs?" ENEMY DOUBLE KILL "Guys?"

THem : OMG MUTED STFU /all REPORT TOP! THICC TOXIC!

This is a little exaggerated, but honestly it is so rare, SUPER RARE, to have a peaceful chat at the end of the game. Usually before a nexus dies I will see : Report X for Y from at least 1 person.

Charmy Bird12/23/2019, 11:35:18 PM2 votes

Dude riot keeps blaming it on players but imo they're the biggest reason there's such a toxic environment in league. Yea gaming can be toxic but there are many other games where the community is chill and helpful but u won't find it in league. The game is toxic to its core riot is toxic When the game lacks any concept of balance and fun then u can't expect the players to be chill. Toxic games attracts and makes toxic people so riot made the new ban system and acts like a police officer u either suck your frustration down or well ban u without even addressing the real issue. It's not a coincidence that the worse the season is the more toxic players are.

Kei14312/23/2019, 6:09:10 PM2 votes

Toxic chat .. typically I see people doing report calling every 3-4 games. Same with people whom give up and say they are done.

My personal statistic when I was keeping track, I experienced intentional disruptive gameplay in 3/250 of my games.

Applesauceys12/23/2019, 9:01:00 PM2 votes

Don't see anything toxic chat wise anymore. Just mild flaming but that is far from what the true definition of toxic is. Toxic gameplay on the other hand every fucking game some one either rage-quits by the 5 minute mark or just ints their ass off. haven't had a game actually decided by game play in forever really killing the game.

RyzeRework12/23/2019, 9:23:50 PM2 votes

I get toxic chat at least once a game if not my team enemy team. Toxic gameplay? Maybe once every 10ish games? Sometimes I'll have a day of people running it down or I wint encounter it for weeks. But no matter what some dumbass rude fuck got something to say. It doesnt matter if it's the smallest shit like my adc bitching my support doesnt auto attack harass

AJStarhiker12/24/2019, 5:00:19 PM2 votes

People think they run into more toxic gameplay than they do because they can't distinguish between unskilled and trolling.

It's easy for someone who knows a role or champions to think someone is trolling when that player may have been autofilled or is just trying to expand their champion pool.

I've played a lot of support. I drop wards as much as possible. So to me, a support who buys the ward item and never uses it can look like trolling.

I'm also a poor jungler, so if I'm not paying attention to my smite cooldowns and have a dragon, herald or baron stolen from me because I don't have smite ready can look like trolling to an experienced jungler.

And that's a huge reason the toxic chat starts. People confusing mistakes for trolling.

OJWasGuilty12/30/2019, 8:32:08 AM1 votes

I think toxic chat and toxic gameplay go hand in hand and reinforce each other more often than not. Usually it starts with someone having a bad game, someone on their team starts flaming, they flame back, they go on tilt, do stupid things and sometimes int. This hit me on an especially bad day so call it recency bias or whatever, but I'm in Gold IV and I see it all the time. It's not quite as bad as it was in silver, but today alone 3 out of my 5 lost games had at least one person who was toxic in the chat, and in 2 of those 3 games the toxicity affected behavior.

Not even joking, in one of them we were WINNING and our midlaner went full tilt, started inting, and threw the game because our jungler smited the crab he was trying to kill. It's unbelievable sometimes.

Nightsky Pirate12/23/2019, 8:07:54 PM1 votes

Both are frequent, especially in normals, can't say about ARAM. As you say, the majority do not.

It is common enough that I incorporate perceived level of tilt into my strategies. Is the enemy Yas angry at his team and believes he has to carry them? Bait him. Is the Cait without faith in my team? Only engage when well warded.

Enemies tilt in their style when losing very frequently but not quite more often than not. Especially after getting ganked or barely lost 1v1 due to a well timed flash or whatnot. Again I pay attention to their mood just based on how their play and control change...

Not even counting chat. Chat is deceptive.

Imbetterthanmoe12/23/2019, 8:15:22 PM1 votes

You know this season my games were usually pretty solid. My team was never all that toxic, but when preseason hit oh my gosh, everyone is raging at everyone. Legit this month alone has made me want to uninstall this game

EATARI12/23/2019, 11:00:51 PM1 votes

Almost none of my games get toxic. I simply play norms, try fun off-meta strats, be polite and positive in chat, and have a great time.

dPensive12/23/2019, 11:51:48 PM1 votes

I usually see one toxic player per game in chat. Rarely see someone purposely INT ingame. Have noticed in ARAM ppl are generally way more chill and inclined to give tips. Call me optimistic or accuse me of having a perception bias, but I like to think overall it's LESS toxic and exclusive these days than when I last played a lot (2017 and before).

If someone does get toxic I rarely see anyone take the bait; infact oftentimes nowadays everyone might call the guy toxic but shut up, focus, and win anyway. Pulling the guy back to good play by not reacting to trollbait rage.

Just my 2 cents

xHeimtechZX12/24/2019, 1:17:29 AM1 votes

Recently? Rare on both ends. I don't mute all and I don't really care too much if you lose lane badly. However, I would say I encounter toxic gameplay more. Two somewhat recent games I had toxic gameplay. One person didn't get top so he said he was going to be a baby and go as AD build Soraka top, gave first blood under mid tower at the start of the game. One person held a grudge on a previous match (on my friend). They said they were holding a grudge and was going to power farm all game with no help to the team or objectives. Power farming isn't terrible, but their reasoning was what makes it toxic. ARAM for some reason I find where most of the toxic chat is, not too sure why. I just go with whatever random champion I get so I learn them and just have a chill time. I guess ARAM players are more serious than that. Recently, my matches have been really fun having chat up for ally and all. I've been playing this game for like 7 years on or off. Never gotten chat restricted and I refrain from toxic chatting. There are some systems in place that I agree aren't the best, but I accept that games aren't perfect.

ChaosReyn12/24/2019, 9:38:11 AM1 votes

I will say about 9/10 people who report someone report them for "verbal abuse or harassment" resulting from 2+ people flaming the shit out of each other after that one play 5 minutes into the game... I would also say that about 9/10 games that devolve into someone griefing the game (inting...afk...however you wanna see it) are done more out of spite when people start flaming the person for playing poorly, or just not wanting to play the game with people who treat them like shit.

There are cases of people who are just inting the game for either wintrading, or just outright trolling the game for some unspecified reason. RQ from getting rekt is obviously still a thing. But pretty much 95% of the flame wars boils down to how someone delivers and/or receives their messages.

In particular...I am not a nice person. I will 1000% get just as petty with you as you do me. I am terrible at it, and I know it - if you start the flame war with me, this isn't League anymore, it's fucking war of the plebs, and that enemy mid lane has every right to throw that "gg ez", I'll fire back at petty teammates all day. Why? It's pretty simple... If I'm having a bad game, you best believe I know it. I don't need you telling me I suck. I don't need you rubbing my nose in it. The only thing that gets you, is a pissed off fucking player. I won't int, but I'm sure as hell not gonna think when I'm pissed. It's actually scientifically impossible to think when pissed - your brain QUITE LITERALLY TURNS OFF. You get your fight or flight options - your mind wants to lock itself into fighting (returning the flame with more flame) or pretty much going AFK from the game. Your mechanics get either stupid aggressive, or stupid defensive, to the point you either died immediately doing nothing, or never entered the fight to begin with. It's psychologically proven - tilted people are shit at video games.

If someone is playing poorly, make constructive suggestions - "yo, get a deep ward if you can so you can catch Shaco coming before he gets close to your lane." "Yo, we scale, play back more and we got this."

From experience, I would actually refrain from saying "dude just sit under tower". That's...somewhat defeatist, and pushes the idea that "the only way you're gonna do shit is by humping a tower all game". That's definitely not what you mean...but tilted people dont think, and it comes off to them as you saying they're failing, and the "fight" people are gonna start fucking diving nexus towers cause they're pissed at having to play defensive before you started telling them to.

And obviously, open flames burn your games. If you're actively losing your shit at someone, you're typing instead of playing the game, you're further demoralizing your team, and you're pretty much making sure nobody's gonna listen to you, even if you do have something important to add. Play the MOBA Game, not the Blame Game.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. :P

It honestly feels like I see toxicity in nearly every game. Either verbal or gameplay. However, I blame Rito for this. They encourage & enable toxicity in their game. I've seen Rito employees themselves participate in toxicity.

The honor system does nothing to fix this. Honors frequently go to the player with the most-toxic attitude, when they aren't going to their duo.

It never gets punished either. It is extremely, extremely difficult to get banned for toxic behavior, even if you openly announce your toxicity in All Chat. Toxic chat receives penal action more frequent, but still rarely. Usually only when very specific keywords get said by the person, but almost never any other general verbal toxicity.

I won't disagree that a lot of "perceived" toxicity may in fact just be actual stupidity, but this doesn't mean the 2 are mutually exclusive. A player can be intentionally toxic because of a misconception in their mind. They may genuinely believe being toxic is beneficial & unfortunately Rito supports this mentality.

Toxicity breeds more toxicity & companies with toxic employees create toxic customers. Let's not forget Rito has seen 2 civil suits & a walkout as a result of their toxic workplace.

It depends on the time of day or year when school is out

RayleighTT12/26/2019, 7:24:11 PM1 votes

Best thingh to see what kind of toxicity it is into this game , is to stop spread your knowledge ,and pull less in a team , you will figure so easy how toxicity tends to increase ,which is very funny. Most of people ignore the bottom of the problems... . Like there is no mather someone can do 0 16 in gold ranked games... , but as long as it goes a negative score high plat , or diamond ,suddenly it starts to mather... , is so sad... , i reported hundreds of troll/griefers, never happened something until ,i haven't took to talk to Riot.

ModPrandine12/25/2019, 4:54:13 AM

I rarely encounter toxic people in my game, though that's not to say I never have encountered them before. In fact I remember one time a few years ago during a game of Hide & Seek on The Crystal Scar (RIP Dominion, my favorite game mode). As Tristana I was hiding in the Boneyard bush when a teammate ran by trying to escape from the seekers. When one of them came by I tried ulting them into a wall to stun them, but I missed & accidentally pushed them towards my ally, costing them a life. Despite my apologies and explanation they refused to listen or accept it, called me a troll and then proceeded to ruin the game themselves by trolling.

Situations like that aside more often than not I have neutral or positive teammates where everyone's trying their best and don't make too big a deal out of others mistakes. Am I always positive? No, but when I do need to rage I do so at the screen and not in chat so I can vent without compromising my teams chances of success.
