Is Banning Toxicity Toxic?

This topic seems to be as divisive as Trump. Compassion vs functionality, as always. We always want to protect and grow healthy communities, but in that pursuit we lose ourselves. I find a lot of you have good points, but fail to come to an understanding for simple reasons.

  1. You assume the other persons wrong, rather than assume you misunderstand their position. Like in a match, you shouldn't assume your opponent is not worse, but equal to you.

  2. It's okay to agree to disagree. I don't think this is a conservative view point, I think the conversation we're all having is actually rather bipartisan. But, I also think that's why we agree on this particular subject.

Banning over words is equally as childish as the words themselves I believe. I won't automatically assume you're wrong, I think we're both misinterpreting our views though. When a guy flames in 2% of his games, he loses 100% of everything. I don't like that, seems to escalate rather quickly. We all have bad games, it's up to one another to thicken our skin. We're all brothers in one form or another. We all want to win. So in that good natured spirit, I'm not reporting for words anymore. Short of harassment that is. I.e.; racism, sexism, threats, at least without specifying beforehand that it isn't meant to be taken literally.

Another point is that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so is toxicity. Meaning, you might like Nickleback, but I find it tilting. Doesn't mean I don't want you to listen to whatever you want. I'll just mute it when it's hitting my ears. These are the first few steps of coexistence, agreeing to disagree, how democrats and conservatives have been friends over history.

So let's work together, trash talk isn't going anywhere. I've suggested perma-mute systems that add another check box beneath 'all chat' called 'toxic chat', that preemptively targets the "GG EZ's" or "Stop feeding Mids" of the Rift. This is an olive branch to those who are very sensitive to no fault of there own, I know coexistence is impossible for some that have mental issues that prevent them from not being offended. I get the disease, and I have sympathy for it. [Edit] - Some people think I'm saying people who want to ban others over words have this disease, I don't think that. Mental disorders are serious and to be honest I'm tilted that you think I'm referring explicitly to you. Can bipolar, schizophrenic, anger disorder people not play league? I'm not being cruel what's so ever about it.

What can we do to get Riot to have this understanding? A dialogue about it, a common understanding. Also I for one, until people can no longer report for subjective conversation, I won't be seen on the rift again. And I suggest to my fellow Chads, to join me. Until reports are limited to AFK''s, scripters, cheaters, int'ers, all those over looked trolls. IF you're not an NPC, if you don't want life to wash over you in just one way, but rather in all of it's entirety, we need to walk together. Conservative and liberal alike. Ours is not one of segregation. Yours is. You are the ones saying we're too childish to play with you. You'd rather ban us than mute us. Our intentions aren't so extreme, we just want to say what we feel in the cusp of the moment. Freedom and passion. It's childish to some, funny to others, as I said beauty in the eyes of the beholder. Just meet us in the middle, that's all we've been asking on here. Together, we can actually become known no longer as a toxic community, if reports are so effective, than we wouldn't be more toxic than ever. I find that the more they police, the more frustrated people get. Let's hold the reins less tightly and together summoners we can go with the flow. Mute people for anything short of freedom of speech harassment clauses, mute others you don't agree with. And I'll continue to mute you when you listen to Nickeback around me. Same idea.

[Edit] - Yeah you guys don't represent even a tiny fraction of the community. If everyone who came on here complaining about the faulty tribunal system, ridiculous penalty tier de-escalation rates, and over sensitive people, stuck around like you guys do -then this post would have 1000's of upvotes and replies. But there are like 3 of the same people going around everywhere down voting and repeating the same ridiculous arguments. When you report people, it isn't because you want the best for the community. It's because you're triggered as all hell and want revenge on the person you're reporting. Saying a few words every fifty games or so, doesn't equate to banning an account with over a 100 $'s of purchases. The ladder is way more toxic. It's just the same SJW's running around on here playing goalie for Riot. Enjoy your dead ass game ;D

You assume the other persons wrong, rather than assume you misunderstand their position.

I don't really assume they're wrong or not -- I assume that they came into an environment where they both know and have agreed (via the terms of use) that certain behavior isn't allowed, and then chosen to exhibit that behavior.

I don't mind trash talk in my gaming. I don't like being insulted or harassed, but I can put up with it and brush it off. One of the reasons I play League more than most other games is because it's an environment that has does not endorse or accept that behavior, much like how I'd pick a coffee shop that doesn't allow people to shout insults to other patrons over one that does -- even if the coffee is equally good at both.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to this -- If you want an environment where you can insult or harass others, play another game. I'm not saying that it's not okay to have that opinion, but League and Riot have made it very clear that they're not interested in saying that behavior is okay here.

There are other places where you can fully express yourself no matter how much you feel like insulting or belittling others. Not every game needs to allow that.

You are blaming the victim of the flame. If we are all brothers with compassion, you shouldn't be taking out your aggression on other people.

I'm not sure why people keep bringing politics into conversations about games, but whatever...

Slight trash talking is not punishable, Riot said it themselves. Hell, they even implemented some parts of the game designed to make fun of enemies. You know, taunts, voice lines when killing someone, Singed's laugh while flipping someone...

Problems start when players are insulting others and insults are not acceptable. I suggest going to any gaming convention, any tournament and see how toxicity is being handled there.

Sorry for not writing too much constructive here, but i basically agree with you here.

Instead of perma mute, i think something similar to your "toxic chat" option, but a little different.

There should be an option which is OFF by default, but if you turn it ON, you can read the chat of these chat banned people. So you have an OPT-in for this "toxic" chat. If anybody feels so mentally weak that they would be offended by chat, they just simply not turn it on, effectively muting the "toxic" player before he said something. This would solve literally every problem with toxic chat, what we currently have now.

Otherwise, your post will be downvoted to hell, because anybody who says that chat toxicity is not the biggest problem in the universe right now, will get downvoted :)

Ps.: I like Nickelback ;)

PS2: I forgot to mention, that i would implement an infinitely scaling chat ban.

We're all brothers in one form or another.

Funny how this sentiment isn't really put into practice when the person decides to start throwing insults.
