Hello Everyone, I hope you are all doing well!

My Name is Deimeter and I belong to a massive gaming community that happens to support teams within league of legends(No I will not post links or give names as this is not a recruitment thread).

I am Currently writing a article for the community and was hoping for the insight and perspective of not only the players but from the moderators as well in the wonderful community. The article Is about Tilting and toxicity within competitive games. So below I have posted a few questions I would like to ask everyone who happens to read this post if they don't mind a few questions for the article! **

  1. What does Tilting and toxicity mean to you?
  2. How do you handle tilting for yourself?
  3. How do you handle or cope with the tilting of other members within the game?
  4. How to you handle toxicity within your games
  5. How do you think we as a whole can prevent it from happening within the game?**

These questions are purely speculative and to ones personal opinion. I do ask that only responses to the questions above be posted below and not to bump the thread with anything non related ^^

Thank you all for those who take part in giving me there insight and I wish you all the best Maybe I will see you soon on the rift! Until then Good luck out there everyone!

Just to clarify something. Mods/Heralds are not Riot Staff. They are community volunteers.

Btw, you know that mods, specialists, and heralds here are all community volunteers and not Rioters right?

Unless their name is red, they aren't a Rioter.

This is just my 2 cents but I always found the best way to deal with toxicity is to make fun of yourself lmao. People love to get a reaction and if you deny them that they hate it.

To the above two people. Yes I am very well aware the Term staff could make one think RIOT but here it does not directly correlate to RIOT STAFF but those who are moderating/keeping track of the boards. It is a loose term used here. A Direct correlation would be to specifically mention riot before staff. I do ask for convenience of keeping track of responses that it be kept on topic of original thread above

  1. What does Tilting and toxicity mean to you? Personally to me, it's when you are under a lot of pressure to perform at a high level of micro and macro and losing sight of that over some instance of (team mate feeding, objective being stolen, cs being lost, etc) and not being able to recover mental focus in order to do what you need in order to win the game. Toxicity is just the result of that bottled up fear and insecurity with a splash of failure that just explodes after someone mentions something non constructive in chat to you specifically or about the state of the outcome of the game before it has even reached its conclusion that affects morale.

  2. How do you handle tilting for yourself? I take a break, by break I mean I distance myself from a particular game mode and switch to another mode like an ARAM or Co-Op vs AI or a low stress type of game to unwind to practice on mistakes or review VODS as a form of self improvement from the game that ended in a loss.

  3. How do you handle or cope with the tilting of other members within the game? It depends on a multitude of factors going in on the game, if the score is even and we have the better team comp I'm usually positive and will give advice on what needs to be done in chat pinging towers, pinging out wards. Constructive macro decision to make sure we push our advantage. If the score is 53- 5 with us being at 5 half our base gone I accept the FF vote and move on and pray that the other members on my team aren't selecting No to keep the other users in the game hostage.

  4. ^ See 3 response.

  5. How do you think we as a whole can prevent it from happening within the game? I mean, Toxicity is just something that is always going to be there. It's like trace amounts of mercury in tuna, you just learn to accept it and try to make the habitat or game we are in better by giving out constructive advice. For example, if there was a 5 man low latency communication setup so that people could coordinate things better the state of the game would be elevated (because not everyone links discord in pregame lobby) but so far it's only been set up exclusively for premades/duos

1 - Toxicity: Behavior intended to aggravate, anger, belittle, or insult other people. Tilting: Letting emotions deteriorate how well you play.

2 - If during the game, try to calm down by telling myself it's just a game. Nothing to get upset over. If the game has ended, take a break. Play something else.

3 & 4 & 5 - To a certain point, just make sure to give congratulations ("gj") when they make a play that benefits the team and thank people ("thx") when they make a play that benefits you. Best way to get someone from being angry is to stop it before it begins. Keep moods high at the start and people are less likely to get upset in the first place about bad turns in the game.

But after a certain point any comment is bound to set off someone who's really angry so just remain silent and let them thrash. No need to make things worse.

  1. What does Tilting and toxicity mean to you?

Tilting is when your own frustration (at yourself, an ally, an opponent, a loss streak, life in general) impacts you to the point where your performance suffers.

Toxicity is when your behavior (in-game or in-chat) is generally offensive or malevolently targeted at another player.

  1. How do you handle tilting for yourself?

Taking breaks, playing ARAM, playing a comfort pick, or just signing off for the night to do something else.

  1. How do you handle or cope with the tilting of other members within the game?

I typically either provide comic relief, advice (if appreciated), gameplay support (if I can), or general encouragement. My job at that point is to try to keep the team together and find a way for the tilting player to feel useful. If that doesn't seem helpful, the best course of action is usually to simply not engage that player to not make the situation worse.

  1. How to you handle toxicity within your games

As above, which can diffuse some situations. Failing that, the mute button. Gameplay toxicity is just sometimes unfortunate, and there's not much you can do if someone is really set on ruining an experience.

  1. How do you think we as a whole can prevent it from happening within the game?**

I think tilting as a whole will always happen, and some players just want to be jerks, so toxicity isn't avoidable either. I've found the best way to mitigate both is to be a good example of a friend, encouraging, team-oriented player yourself, because it tends to bring out those traits in others.
