Why is the league community so toxic?

I've played Many online games over the years and come to realize just how bad players in league treat others. What's the reason for this? I am sick of some armchair commando thinking they are so big and bad behind a screen. Riot really needs to do something about this. I mean if a players account gets banned all the person does is create a new one and do the same thing again.

Short version: League is toxic because Riot punishes frustrated players who yell at toxic players, and not toxic players intentionally ruining games.

LaughingStapler7/6/2017, 9:43:21 PM11 votes

I don't know if it's really THAT toxic. I think people overuse that word and apply it to nearly anything they don't like. 80% of my games are fine.

GreatWhiteNorth7/6/2017, 11:03:17 PM11 votes

Why is the league community so toxic? The answer is simple:

  1. On every team, there are 5 players. All it takes is one toxic player to tilt the team.

  2. After the game, most of these 5 enter the queue feeling more toxic after their last game.

  3. Some of them, get tilted over the smallest thing in that next game and spread their toxicity.

  4. The cycle repeats.

Marshbouy7/6/2017, 9:49:48 PM7 votes

The bigger the community, the more toxic it is (in general, doesn't apply to everything). League has a massive community. I also have a theory that it's toxic because toxic people can stand playing with toxic players more than non toxic players, so non toxic players drop out of the game faster than toxic ones, resulting in less non toxic people.

Because the players who play LoL are fucking dumb pieces of shit.

Mute all, stop using chat. Problem solved.

BlueThingamajig7/6/2017, 11:56:52 PM5 votes
  1. Negativity bias: It's easier to notice negative events than positive ones.
  2. Long games with unstable equilibrium and team requirements: Small game problems will likely become big problems, even if you had nothing to do with it.
  3. Lack of knowledge of Hanlon's razor: Most "trolls" aren't actually trying to harm the team, but that doesn't stop shit flinging festivals the moment a few kills happen. Conversely, people think about the toxic reputation and assume everyone is being toxic. Again, review Hanlon's razor.

My best tips: Don't assume people are trying to be asshats; instead just play the best game you can play.

league isnt even toxic, play csgo and then try to whine and complain like a baby on their forums, you'll get destroyed

its a video game, not a daycare.

Noblewind7/6/2017, 11:31:15 PM3 votes

League is just so highly competitive and relies on teamwork to win games. I feel like it also starts at the bottom and grows from there. If you've ever tried making a second account, you'll be shocked at how insanely snobby and mean people are, I'm talking people who are really bad. It's also the community transparency with Riot which is a good thing IMO, but it has the negative tradeoff of creating a group of 'entitled' players.

I used to play Dota before LoL, and from experience I would say the players were about as equally toxic (slightly less though in Dota from an older playerbase). The difference to me was that trash talking was a bit more of an established cultural thing in that game, as well as in other games. If your teammate gives first blood you can ping GG in all chat and no one really cares. In most LoL games you'll have atleast 1 person in the game that will fly off the rails at any small criticism.

Any of my games has to contain at least one 12/13/14yo kid who thinks that if he says "sell skin" and "delete lol" it will make me cry. In fact, it just makes me sad, cause there are many toxic people here. Thinking about the fact that they're spreading so much hate makes me not wanting to play league anymore. I used to play for fun. Now I'm just stressed out in every damn game. Yeah, I can use the "mute" button, but they're still gonna be there, flaming. It's not fun anymore. It's just sad. Amumu

There have actually been a lot of people who have been perma banned and who have reformed because of the perma ban. And League is a very competitive game. Many people also forget to understand that League is a mindgame too (ie making the enemy team tilt by making them think their 0/2 mid is inting.) I honestly believe this honor thing is the best thing that Riot has done in a while to get people to get along with each other.

DRAGOON Burst7/7/2017, 1:15:57 AM2 votes

I am sure there are positive people in this community. Yet, I have seen people do the most toxic/negative things ever without them even saying anything in chat. Here is a list of some few:

Ping spam harrassment. (We've all seen it.) Spam-champion-icon-on-Tab-menu harassment. (You know, when you click their picture repeatedly on the tab menu) The question mark ping The spamming-summoner-spell-cooldown

Here's a few that requires chat: Asking for 9x report Someone lying that you said something offensive in postchat or allchat (Recently had someone lie in postchat that I called him a n***** when I haven't said anything all game. I was mindblown.) The usual bs they spew out at you

I've played this game ever since its early seasons (2-3), and it's been getting worse ever since. The retention rate of troll/toxic players and those who do not reform contribute to this. The rate of which new players join League and the chance of them being a toxic person also contributes. As I have discussed with my brother many times, "The IQ and attitude of this game's general playerbase has been dropping with each season."

Having a good game is great, but there are those games where people are the absolute worst and it's just very frustrating to deal with.

**You should also look at the fact that this game is a free game as well.

If you have been playing online games for years, than you should be asking why the community is so sensitive.

S0urce1/31/2018, 12:07:57 AM2 votes

I've played this game on and off since pre-season 1 and I've always thought League of Legends had one of the...or THE worst community out there. It's for some reason very sensitive to trash talk, while in many other games players doesn't seem to care if someone trash talk or even trolling, and the reason for this might be because LoL is a highly competitive game and there's no real communication among the community.

Consider this:

  1. Pretty much most of the games you end up playing are with players you will never interact with or see again after the match.
  2. You get brainwashed that the players you meet are not really players, but ENEMIES...and you are ready to do anything in your power to win, even to a point where you make them tilt/rage.
  3. Even when communicating with the enemies, their text will be shown in a red color...which enhances the effect of them being bad/dangerous/enemies.

How does any of the above contribute to a good community?

The best time in LoL for me was during season 1-2 when the custom game commuinty was huge, there were hundres of different type of games (I mostly played ARAM, ABAM, ARAB- & ABAB-Dominion). And players talked with eachother in the lobby before and after the games, not to mention also during the games - which lead to that players turned into people...There were also very little toxic, if someone were toxic you got a bad reputation and wasn't invited to the games.

onisal1/23/2018, 5:37:10 PM2 votes

The Toxic Level is the highest for those who are trying to get started in ranked matches for the first time. To be honest, it reminds me why it took so long to even play 'live' matches. When your first match was met with the words 'You should log out and disinstall the game', it makes it hard to try. If it wasn't for the current event with the very nice xp reward, I wouldn't put myself through it. And to those out there who make it feel like you know everything... try and remember a time when you were the new guy and help us get better, not report us.[sg-soraka]

Bucketheadl7/7/2017, 8:45:29 AM2 votes

The league community isn't toxic, we just live in an age where every little thing is offensive, and needs to be punished. The amount of people I see come on here crying about what some random kid on the internet said to them and start telling Riot that they "really need to do something about this" is overwhelming. Ya'll are honestly just a bunch of sensitive pussies, to put it bluntly. Grow a pair.

Fate Decides4/27/2019, 4:28:05 PM1 votes

Because theres a LOT to learn about it, and theres a high skillcap to be very successful.

You're matched into a game with 4 platinums. ALL varying in macro and micro levels.

Some of them, truely godlike mechanics but they know absolutely nothing about closing a game out.

To you, thats kind of frustrating since you want to argue what you can do to win but since his ego is hard to break because he's convinced he's good from his micro is where the arguements start.

Telling anyone that they're wrong or bad can hurt them in the ego a lot especially if he renowns himself as a good player.

How do we react when people hit our ego? we bite, its our safety net our mental protection from society.

Xydez7/11/2019, 7:10:21 PM1 votes

In my opinion it's because in LoL, unlike many other games, you can actively worsen the performance of other players (feeding). In games such as CS:GO, when you die, you don't make the other players less likely to hit headshots. You give the enemy a few hundred dollars, but does it matter if the enemy has one more flashbang?

being toxic is entertaining, cause the community gets so bent out of shape by it.

Rainfall7/7/2017, 11:46:31 AM1 votes

because if you leave the game you get punished if you afk the game you get punished if you troll the game you get punished,so even if someone is trolling you,you have to take it and run out of your base only to get killed for the next 30 minutes, thats why people are toxic.

Came back to play this game after 2 years and had some good games jungling and supporting in normal games. Then I meet a toxic duo bot lane who kept dying to enemy jungler while I killed their mid and top lane. They kept blaming me whole game for them getting ganked and kept calling me all kind of names so when I snapped and called them mentally challenged they decided that they were offended and reported me. I don't know if Riot employees read the whole chat or lets the system decide when more than one player reports someone. Please Riot read the whole conversation and see who is actually spreading the cancer.

Scary Door12/7/2017, 2:58:55 PM1 votes

Toxicity isn't simply limited to the League community. Most online games have pretty disgusting communities, particularly some of the FPS and MMO games.

In terms of raw numbers, sure, League has the worst community because it has the highest number of players, but Toxicity-Per-Capita definitely belongs to a few other games/communities before this one.

R34p3rz5112/12/2017, 8:07:32 AM1 votes

Totally agree, simply try to play my first ranked game to see what it's like and Jesus...everyone is EXTREMELY verbally abusive. Then they go and report me for inting. Like what kind of community are you trying to run riot? It's not welcoming in the least bit, and it seriously makes me question why I even waste my time playing a game where no matter what I get called names simply because I'm new. Something more than simply reporting people for it needs to be done.

I've played a lot of online games and League is actually pretty good now compared to what I have experienced in the past. I started playing online games over a decade ago and League is the most improved out of all the online communities I've been a part of.

I've played Blizzard games, I've played EA games, I've played Ubisoft games, I've played Nexon games, I've played several online games on XBL and PSN... and Riot games are probably the best out of them all right now and I'm pretty certain it's due to their policies and punishment systems. No one would ever get punished in other games and people took advantage of that and were ridiculously awful to others because there was no consequence.

Internal Dream3/2/2018, 9:43:18 PM1 votes

I agree, that the league community is a bunch of toxic mushrooms. However, I'd have to disagree with

"I mean if a players account gets banned all the person does is create a new one and do the same thing again."

Think about it, if you have an account that has 50 champions that you buoght and grinded to get, then it's definitely a pretty bad time when you get banned. Since for one you have to restart and do whatever the heck you did before and grind grind grind, wastes these toxic mushrooms time to participate in ranked. As for normals, they're always toxic and you can't really do anything about that.

It's the same as every other online multiplayer game. You're just stuck with the shitty people longer. And you are, for whatever reason, discouraged from blocking or muting people. Everyone I've known to play games like Call of Duty, for example, do not hesitate to mute someone that's annoying them. Even if they just have a slightly annoying voice, they get muted.

I remember playing ranked once and at the very beginning of the game my adc was like f*** you you suck go somewhere else (I was the support) after literally the game had just started so the rest of the team was groaning because the adc wouldn't even let me near him to even help and I didnt want to mess other lanes up and my question is if someone is so angry why do they even queue up again. Like if you get heated just take a break it's not like you can expect to win if you dont work with your team. I know this is stupid but lol should have like "dude take a break button" so at the end of the game if someone was massively toxic, teammates can hit the "dude take a break button" and lol could time them out for like even 5 minutes idk

I also have played alot of different games. I felt like there was a bunch of pretty toxic players in OW. I just played a game with this guy getting carried and did not do anything and just spaming EZ everytime just one dies. Then my team says to him that he doesnt even do anything so if he wants to write EZ and play the dirty game then he should do something for their team too. And then ofc his Sona and Master Yi carry friends helped him and those 3 was toxic as hell. They said for example: KYS you fucking retarted mongol kid with down syndrome go to hell and i hope all your familiy die and i will fucking shoot u when u die.

I personaly think league is pretty fun when it is chill but the toxic community just ruins everything in league
