bans for talking trash are a bad idea

in my opinion banning people for trash talk is a bad mistake. ban them for scripting definitely, for trolling yes. for afk? probably if it happens too many times. but for trash talk? why?

because it pisses you off? so what? that can be a good thing!

there is trash talk in every competitive sport ever made. i have seen hideo nakamura trash talk his opponent in chess! and i believe it is good for the game.

when someone on the other team is talking, it makes the game mean more. it makes me want to beat that kid and shut him up. how can that be a bad thing? yes if a trash talker beats me then i am more upset than i would have been, but that is all part of caring about the game more.

if everyone is polite every game and just says 'good luck' and 'well played', well that is fine and i can respect those players, but the game has less value. it has no emotion. it loses its edge. i would much rather play against the trash talkers. it is the difference between a PG movie and one rated R. PG movies suck. they are too soft. no flavor.

and that is what many people want to turn LoL into. a PG rated game experience. i guess that is fine for some people. especially it is good for young kids. but if you ask me i prefer competitive games with some edge.

there is trash talk in every competitive sport ever made.

Trash talk in basketball, soccer, tennis etc. can get the team / the player punished.

Here is a list with different sports and different punishments. Even when some people post stuff on twitter they get punished in their sport.

So what are you talking about?

In most sports, you're able to see your opponent and see how they react to your trash talk, so you can adjust on the fly if it seems that you went too far. With text as the only means of communication between complete strangers, it becomes very difficult to predict exactly how your comments will be interpreted. Better to play it safe and avoid statements that might hit a sore point.

If you can develop a relationship with the other players in the game as you go, and everyone is amiable and having a good time, then perhaps you can get away with a bit of light-hearted trash talk. But don't dive right into a game insulting every bad play and gloating over every kill.

Apparently, you never heard of C9 Hai getting fined for pointing the middle finger.

But, if not riot, who's going to protect the fragile egos of the boosted animals?

Then I suggest that you go play a professional sport where you can trash talk 24/7 with no punishments what so ever evidently.
