Can we...
Can we make using the word cancer (when not referring to astrology) as an adjective socially unacceptable and a reportable offense? it's one of those things where it's just like "how could someone find it okay to casually say this?" and then you realize morals and empathy are uncommon when the only thing people can relate to is their body pillow and fictional characters.
using rape as a way to describe someone losing in a match is another mind boggling gaming trend that baffles me. you wouldnt tell your mom that you just raped her at monopoly would you? or that you just raped your dad at poker? so apparently it's only okay to rape fictional characters that are being controlled by real other players. please keep your sexual fantasies to yourself. i dont want to have my character be an outlet for you. furthermore it mocks rape victims and empowers rapists by treating those who are "raped" as worthless individuals that have nothing to offer a team.
in psychology there is a process known as classical conditioning. if you want to teach someone something or train an animal you introduce a stimulus, note a reaction, and then associate it with another stimuli. there is also another form of learning called operant conditioning. in operant conditioning you place a person or animal under some form of stressful scenario and survival instincts kick in. upon being placed back into that same or similar scenario the creature will try to do the same thing to escape from it. i say this because of two very important reasons.
- is that by allowing players to associate cancer with negativity we're creating a disillusionment that is causing more susceptible players (less cognizant) to become desensitized to the issues of cancer and generally abusive towards those who have it. and
- by not punishing the instance of mocking rape in our community we're allowing it to thrive in a form that is considered somewhat socially acceptable when it should not be acceptable at all. repressed sexual desires aside, studies have shown that this type of associative learning can be harmful.
