"Why are people so toxic in this game?"

Well its probably because it starts when that person's match is ruined by another person who had their match ruined.... etc, etc, its a chain of griefing in essence. But the root problems, or those people that start these small chains of reactions are why people get mad, and get "toxic".

Have you ever played a game of football (not the american handball version) and had a person on your team just start purposely passing the ball to the opposite team everytime he got it? there are 2 things that would happen either A) they would never get a pass from any other player ever again, or B) they would just get kicked off the team entirely and told to get lost. Then usually because people arent inherently assholes, the other team will most likely sit one of their players out to make the game fair in terms of numbers again, that player would then tag in/tag out with another teammate and things generally go smoothly from there.

The problem is that it is difficult or perhaps impossible to implement the same kind of thing in League, get a teammate that feeds/trolls/afks? you cant just tell them they arent welcome in the game anymore and kick them out, likewise you cant leave the game yourself (not that you'd leave a football match because of one person being an ass either!). And of course, the enemy team will not and cannot just "sit a player out", so the player(s) get frusturated at the audacity that a player has to ruin the game for them BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. This kind of behaviour would not fly in the real world, people just wouldnt think to pull the kind of crappy behaviour they do online because the computer screen between them and the rest of the HUMANS who are playing the game for some reason makes the logical part of their brain check-out for the day.

Yes, you can report them after the game the same way you would tell all your friends that X person was being an unsportsmanlike player that would ruin a perfectly fun and fair game for them by passing the ball to the opposite team on purpose. That person would then quickly be blacklisted, this is a permanent "punishment" or consequence of their actions because they only have ONE identity, unfortunately, there is no way to institute a similar consequence online as you can make infinite identities/accounts/aliases.

Is the root of this problem treatable? hard to say, unless some more extreme and unforgiving measures are taken to dissuade persons from doing such things it is unlikely it will ever stop.

i think a lot of the toxicity comes from the way the game is designed. i believe you are exactly right in that there is a chain of toxicity and it spreads across the players. but i think many times this toxicity begins with the game.

imagine you are playing a game of football and you are matched up against a player who is just a little bit better than you. you can hold your own against him but eventually he slips by you and scores. now because he scored he gets a bonus. he becomes a little bit faster than he was before. well he was already better than you to begin with. now that he has gotten this buff, it is not long before he scores again. so he becomes faster yet. soon you are unable to compete with him at all. he is toying with you and laughing at you and can beat you at will. and he is not only ruining the game for you, but your entire team. none of them can stop him now either. and they quite naturally blame you because you are the one who let him get so strong.

your fun game of football has suddenly turned into an extremely unfun game. you are tired and frustrated and you just want to leave, but you cant. it is against the rules. you have to suffer through the entire humiliation of a game to the end or risk getting banned from football.

can you see how toxic this situation could be? and it is not any players fault. it is just the way the game is designed. it is the most toxic game ever made before any player touches it. that is the root of the problem. and the toxicity spreads from there.

Except in most cases people dont ruin games on purpose. Sure there are trolls but they are rare. Most of the time its people find person with worst score in team and blame and flame him. Come on , get real, how many times were u called "troll" or accused of "assisting enemy team" because u had negative score, missed smite, forgot to ping SS, didnt gank somewhere, missed important ability...

Actually, no.

Toxic people are just dicks.

I feel like there'd be a lot less toxicity if Riot was drastically more severe in their punishments. Like, second-offense account ban severe.

Not to mention the tribunal removal years ago for an ineffective bot.

As long as Riot doesn't care and people believe they can behave however they like with impunity, things will never change. It would also greatly help if people would do two things they currently do not. 1) Give credit to your opponents for playing well and 2) Understand the roles on the field as they are happening.

Example: ARAM Game: I draw Garen Garen , which for me, is akin to the worst possible thing in ARAM. I was prepared to get roughed up to begin with, but then the team draws ended up looking like this.

Garen Kalista Ryze Nidalee Malzahar verses Singed Hecarim Ashe Graves MissFortune

The loading screen told me that I was in for a rough ride and that our team needed to really work together to win it with their 3 ADC's to corral. We were winning this game, largely because of the Garen Spearhead and our opponents being to distracted killing me to worry about my teammates, to which I did comment that I was surprised that they weren't breaking off to kill our damage dealers more often than they were. Our Kalista was tearing it up out there. It was the first time in my life that I was 2/10 and felt useful. I was doing my job well because we were winning and I was the only person dying on my team. I was good with it.

Then our 4/6 Ryze decides he wants to get on me about "feeding" the enemy team. In an instant, I went from feeling useful to feeling like letting Ryze try to tank them all himself to see how well it goes for him. It happens that fast.

I did not succumb to his toxicity, and we proceeded to win the game. But it really made me wonder how many players of this game look for any and all excuses to whine and complain. People need to understand the roles and situations happening out there. Sure, I was 2 and 10 when he opened his mouth, but I also lead both teams in assists and we had won every engagement to that point. There was no good purpose for turning on the toxic jets to try and tilt his own teammates.

People need to relax and enjoy the game. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you don't. Just remember the first rule of life as a Gamer.

"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."

There is no valid excuse for being toxic.
