Tips to help a nervous wreck of a player?

For whatever reason, anytime I get into a fight I always freak out and click all over the place, thus, losing me a fight. There are countless times where I'll be playing Fiora and ill use my ult but the fight would be so stressful I would click just on the enemies feet and not proc my ult. Are there any tips to avoid this? It happens more so on melee champions then ranged champions, but I don't very much like ranged champs (no offense to those who do)

Well, this is definitely a first to see around PB. I'm not exactly sure if it's the right board, but, regardless, it does involve behavior, so, I'll treat it as such.

Also, fair warning, I don't personally tangle with issues of nervousness much if at all, so, my suggestions may more or less be limited.

Firstly: Breathe. Breathe four seconds in, and seven seconds out. Take the opportunity before committing to each encounter to center yourself. Every trade, every skirmish, every teamfight, all have the opportunity to go awry.

Just breathe, and prepare yourself to follow through.

Second: Always have a method to bail available. Flash, Lunge, Slice & Dice, Chronobreak, etc., you can work up your confidence in your fights by having an out ready.

Third: Commit. For some players I've seen, committing to a fight can be the hardest thing to do. I've lost matches where pivotal fights were never even had because nobody wanted to set foot near the enemy. Once you've cleared your thoughts with a good breath or two, try to just hone in on a target and attack.

It could probably start off as borderline tunnelling - and, for this reason, you might be well off practicing it with Champions like Xin Zhao, Diana, or Kled, as they're sticky, survivable Divers. I especially recommend Xin Zhao since he's got a fairly simple kit and his ult can help quite a lot in making fights more breatheable.

And, lastly, for better or for worse - Have fun playing who you play. The more you play certain Champions, the more you'll understand their kit and the easier it'll be for you to get into a flow state. So, even if you can't help but panic as a fight breaks out, just try to have fun playing who you play. You'll get there eventually.

I really hope my advice wasn't...Too awful shitty, it's difficult to really posit on something I don't myself experience, but, whatever the case, I hope some of what I said helps.

Be self-centered.

Remember in any fight, there's just you, nobody else, and you doing things. Pay attention only to what you can get done in a fight (pulling off your combos on the right target, etc). Imagine your enemies are passive parties (NPCs, minions, AI) and your allies don't exist at all - you do your share and don't think about them doing theirs.

Set a goal in any fight, or a direction, and singlemindedly try to fullfill it, basically paying no attention to anything else.

Like if I am playing Jarvan, I often set the goal to seize down the enemy ADC, if I can, forcing them to either focus me, or risk their safety. Then I just autoattack random enemies (thats all you need to do - just autoattack anyone), until I see the oppurtunity to do this.

Also, as far as focusing, don't try to be perfectionist. There's usually at least 2 good targets to focus (AP mid & ADC) and only one terrible target (tank) to focus, on average. Even if you focused the enemy bruiser, you did okay... there are other things to focus on to do well in a fight. Definitely DON'T try to do everything right, ONLY try to do a little bit better than you would if you went into a fight and went all over the place and lost the fight like you described, definitely don't try to do more than only a little better. Try do just one thing better, like focusing the right target.

In other words have a startegy about what you intend to do in any fight long before (for team fights) and try to do just that, nothing else, and then just do your best at it.

Remember there's just you, and you can damage or attack only one enemy at a time, and the rest SHOULD come naturally, the rest needs no thought given to it. Good luck.

it happened to me too.. especially with fiora!

the solution is easy, just relax and have fun, don't try hard too much

who cares if they will flame you, or if you end up feeding?

at first it's normal, then you'll get over it and perform better

eventually you'll relax and enjoy those teamfight

maybe avoid ranked games for the time being, since those games can be stressful if you're trying to climb

good luck and remember to have fun!

Might help to start using A to attack move. I get super panicky too and I have to call on my starcraft roots and start attack moving everything. Sometimes results in a stupid auto attack on a creep (really wish it would strictly prioritize champs), but at least you aren't misvlicking and running right up to their face. Also with fiora, it probably would help more than with an ADC, which is the main role it happens to me with. You can also shift+right click.

Thank you all for the great advice. I've been playing lux lately and have found out that I do really good with her and I rarely have moments where I click all over the place or whatever as I did when playing top lane. I just don't think I'm quite ready for top lane yet maybe when (or if) I get out of bronze. Till then I'll just stick with lux and use her to climb for now.
