"Punishment System"

þeta - Summoner Stats - League of Legends

I would like Everyone who comes accross this to read it and skim through the chats to prevent trouble with themselves and to understand there is a huge problem in League of Legends. This can be informational, or it you can laugh at me, but regardless everyone can learn something from this.

I got insta banned for 2 weeks for this chat. I was honor level 4. even though it was mostly positive / neutral, barely negative with some insight as to what the players were doing wrong. The reason for the ban? I used the word "%%%%%%" at no one but rather a stupid ranked strategy in 3v3 that's been around since the start of 3v3. This super forbidden word was used in pregame lobby with team chat where everyone was in compliance and we ALL KNEW EACH OTHER. Regardless I am not here to argue the dumb meta that'll never change. I also understand that this term can be "offensive", but I mean seriously, I have been called a "Ni**er" multiple times and after reporting there was no result. It is the internet, people will always get their feelings hurt. There should be some leniency. This is more of a farewell because I am pretty fed up. Please skim through this chat because after it I am going to post my messages between me and "Riot Derp" (Derp is offensive too imo, but again not here to argue that).

I got a 2 week ban which lost me

  1. season skin and chromas for ALL queues
  2. Challenger recall
  3. Challenger jacket/ whatever the reward is this year
  4. the border and icon in all queues (D5 solo, D3, flex almost Challenger, Challenger 3v3 for 8 months)
  5. Any keys or chests for the next, I dont know, 6 months of good and proper play? Honor levels take forever to climb
  6. my TIME
  7. it also lost me my concept of fun in this game - I feel like everything is just too monitored and strict. Everyone has to watch out for literally anything they say.....EVEN POLITICAL. This is a terrible direction and application in a video game. here is what Riot Derp( super ironic imo) had to say about the situation:

Me:

I got banned after a ranked 3v3 game for 14 days over calling hyper comp "gay" in teamchat where everyone was in compliance. Additionally there was barely any chat that game.....I just dont understand how this system is different. It seems to have changed a lot. Also, i was reading the terms and cursing is considered a ban-able offense? Are you kidding? There's literally no freedom of speech in this game. I have been playing this game for quite a while now and in no way do I feel as though this is a fair system. I miss the old days. There's no way its okay to get banned for something like this. Please tell me in much more detail what happened here. I am beyond enraged. Not only did I just lose all of my lp in ranked, but i also lost honor level 4 (which took 8 months of constant play to get??) AND possibly lost end of season rewards? I need an explanation.

Derp:

Hey there þeta,

Derp from Player Support reporting in!

I know seeing a suspension on your account is shocking so let me give you the breakdown as to why the penalty was given. I read through the chat logs and you received the penalty for using a homophobic slur. We have a strict zero-tolerance policy for this behavior and unfortunately, the penalty will have to remain on the account. We don't only penalize people for using slurs or vulgar language, we actually penalize all negative behavior because we want to protect every player's game experience. I'll go ahead and link you to our Instant Feedback System FAQ here, where it states, "Players who are found to be causing a negative game experience are then punished..."

The chat system is there for players to communicate on working as a team to win or give positive/constructive criticism. It may seem like your penalty is unjustified but think to yourself on if any of the comments you made contributed positively or negatively to the game. We really want to emphasize that all players should adopt the concept of neutrality, even if another player started it, arguing back does not help the game environment get better. You don't have to agree with us on a personal level but these are the community rules and if you don't follow them, you will get penalized.

When teammates frustrate you, it's best to just not respond to them and mute them. This isn't "the fix" to it all, it's just to prevent you from writing in chat and protect you from getting penalized. At the end of the game please remember to report the negative players so that we can take action accordingly, there's also no need to ask for reports because we only need 1 report to start investigating.

I do have to warn you that because you are at a 2-week suspension, this is your last warning. The next penalty you receive will be escalated to a permanent ban, so keep that in mind. I know this is really disappointing to hear but I hope this experience helps you avoid getting penalized in the future. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to hit us up.

Me:

Riot Derp,

This might be the strictest most unrealistic punishment system I have ever seen. I cannot think of any other game that takes things this far with how monitored and stringent typing is. I mean you are literally saying you want robots to play the game. Realistically, if you were to ban (or punish) every player for any form of negative style, you would have no players left. The reaction of the players is a direct result as to how the system is setup. I have been playing for a while, but this report system has been really changed over time and I can assure you one thing (I know you don't set the rules, but I have a need to say this)- Eventually you are going to lose a lot of interest in the game and people will just hate playing it (already happening a lot) like the handful of major streamers and many friends and as soon as something better comes out, they won't think twice. Anyways, have a list of questions I would like you to answer (please no links to FAQ, I've read my fair share of them). I managed to somewhat organize them based on topic.

  1. So what you are saying is that even if i get reported 2 years down the line (with no reports in between) - its a permanent ban?

  2. the chat that I had was PRE and POST game and it was in no way a slur towards anyone and did not affect the IN game experience. For you to justify penalizing me based on how I verbalize my thoughts is a little too much. I can understand limitations like not telling someone to kill them selves (which I never do) or anything of the sorts but to call something "gay" is just a way to say something "sucks" however its the first thought that came to my mind when i was typing it so its what was written down. Again, I completely understand the concern here but the punishment MOST CERTAINLY does not fit the so called crime.

  3. If after reading this you still don't feel as though maybe it was a bit too harsh for a 14 day ban, fine - but i do need to ask. Am I getting any end of season rewards? I thought i saw somewhere I have to be honor lvl 2 - but is that even realistic to get before the end of the season? It took forever to go from 1 to 2 and I think there is less than 2 months left. There isn't even a surefire way to track progress.

  4. I would like to add that if things like "%%%" and "gay" are considered such a no no (which seems very political to me), then why not instill a PERMANENT filter which will automatically (with no choice to the user) "***" them out in order to prevent hurting others feelings. This would definitely fix a lot of issues. The person who said it wouldn't get reported because the people receiving the slur (if its even directed at anyone) wouldn't be able to get the insult across and the person who is victimized by the insult wouldn't even know what the insult was.

  5. Also, you mentioned something about how it only takes one report to investigate the entire game. This means that I was reported, but i genuinely have no clue who or why someone would have even reported me? out of spite? 3v3 players can be disgusting and it kills at the conscious because of the severely messed up system which definitely needs reworked.

Finally, I want to say that I am terrible at portraying my thoughts in an organized manner (clearly), but I would hope this was sufficient enough to get my points across in such a manner that you or anyone else reading this will understand my frustration and where I am coming from.

Respectfully,

beta (with that weird b)

Derp

Hey again,

I appreciate you giving me your honest opinions on the situation -- I understand that our penalty system may seem harsh and like you as time goes on, things are constantly changing -- we had set rules, and as time went on the rules also changed and the community helped create these rules.

Oh god no, other than the permanent suspension we always give players the chance to heal their accounts penalty status. It's not through time, you just have to play a lot of games and exhibit sportsmanlike behavior (positive or neutral stance) and your status will definitely heal.

Even though your comments were in pre or post-game chat, other players can see your comments. Players who see negative/offensive comments still get affected and can create a negative experience. For example, have you ever had someone troll you in champ select? or after a bad game, someone just berates you in post-game? those all can upset a player's experience. I know your comments weren't directed towards anyone to offend them, but when you use these terms it's used negatively -- words like "%%%%%%" the definition of the word became an offensive way to address homosexuals. Your intentions may have not been malicious but those terms are viewed very offensively to others and we just don't want that behavior in our community. Yes, we only need 1 report to start the investigation, but whether you got reported or our systems did it, the behavior you exhibited was negative which is why the penalty was given.

Unfortunately, because your account received a penalty, your Honor has dropped to 0 and will be Honor locked until the account shows behavior improvements. I wish we had a better system when it comes to honor...A lot of us here at Player Support have been asking for changes to be made with Honor being a part of the penalty. I'm going to be honest and say that you probably will not be getting the Season Rewards for this year... :c

You do have some great feedback in your last few comments, our systems aren't perfect (and we shouldn't pretend that they ever are or will be). like you mentioned, here at Player Support, we aren't necessarily the ones who design these systems -- we're more so here to help explain how they work, how they interact with our accounts, and how to do better in the future. I definitely think you should post on our boards, where you can get opinions from other players and the developers pay attention to the posts as well.

Derp,

So after 8 months of maintaining challenger in 3v3, diamond in solo queue, and almost challenger in flex 5v5, you're saying it was all for nothing and unrecoverable. Nothing to show for it? Even with a month and a half I wouldn't be able to "prove" myself worthy for honor level 2. Okay, To be honest with you, that is a big factor in even playing ranked or this game for that matter and its a big turn off weighing on top of the plenty of other turn offs. What blows is that I like and prefer this game over any other game and love the concept of it, but hate the management. I think this 2 weeks ban kind of opened my eyes and I kind of feel free. I've been pretty loyal to this game and definitely don't feel the reciprocation. The worst part is it was literally because of a term that i hardly mentioned out of context . That's a joke (a not so funny one). I am sorry but this game is more stressful than it is fun - I think i'll just delete the client in its entirety and not look back. It's sad that it came to an end in this kind of way. I never imagined this would be the way I stopped playing.

Unfortunately, No longer a fan,

beta

P.S. "Derp" can be seen as offensive by many because its slang for mentally slow.

I have literally never posted on boards. This is not like me, I don't even log into them, but I really just feel annoyed with everything about League and seriously do not blame the plethora of pro streamers, players, and friends who stopped playing this game. A huge problem with how this plays out is that they don't really care if they ban you because they know just as well as a toxic person would know: just make another account and continue to play. The chances of that are high and the chances of buying the favorite skins from your last account that you already owned once are also very likely. That's more money to Riot (obviously a business no doubt so this brings them even more profit). This will not fix toxic. The reason this "toxin" exists is because the cancer of this very toxic community comes from the management of league of legends via Riot. This is the worst game in terms of team play I have ever come across. I could easily just play next season, get what I want in the queues and play on a smurf and not care about what i say or do because I don't care for it, but I will admit - it still wont solve anything even if I do better myself as a person with my VOCAB. I could easily suck it up and just play 2 weeks later and get what I want next season, but that's not what I care about. Regardless of such a ridiculous solution for such a game, one thing is for sure - the problem here is bigger than me. This game is getting run into the ground and it really hurts to watch. My advise: stop investing your money and time into this game because eventually, it'll shut down and you'll lose everything you put into it and feel like you got nothing out of it. After 6 years of basically playing this game everyday - I literally feel like nothing was to come from it. Skins got more expensive, ranked got harder because of garbage runes, pathing got worst, the bugs got worst, the events got worst, the nerfs and buffs ruined a lot of things, the system got much stricter, now keys depend on your honor level and are much less dispensed, and the rewards from the chests are saturated with random garbage, etc.....

...

What am I voting for ... yes that you are crazy? Or no that the system is too harsh?

But whatever you wanted to say, this is a deserved punishment. Majority of the playerbase don't believe that there is a place for hate speech within the game.

Fermi Paradox9/23/2018, 9:50:26 PM4 votes

I just want to make something clear beforehand: Since I started around early season 3, I NEVER received any punishments. I didn't even have Low-Priority queue. I don't flame and I am trying to stay nice overall. Yes, I do not like flamers, and I absolutely despise people that constantly bash on others ingame for whatever reason.

I still think that those instant "you said the no-tolerance-word, now you're banned, hah!" punishments are super bad. Not everyone is informed about this "zero-tolerance" list, most people I know only knew that there's a system that gives you chat restrictions and THEN bans you. Barely any of them even KNEW that you can get banned instantly for saying certain phrases until I told them. And that's the problem. Tell those people which words you do not want to hear at all and they won't say it. What language you use is based on where and how you grew up. I've met people from the worst places that use "Hurensohn" (which means "son of a....prostitute") in almost every sentence, people who use nazi jokes on a daily basis. Those people don't know how "harsh" it is to use "jew" as an insult. Those people think it's just as "bad" as saying "idiot". And who are they to blame? The internet is a toxic place of dicks. And that's where we are right now. We all know that insulting is bad but not everyone knows what offends you and what doesn't. So why do we differenciate in such a "random" way? If we tell someone his mother is a....whatever you wanna call her to insult her...some people might go crazy because in their culture, their mother is the most precious person on this world. Those people will surely believe it would be best to ban everyone straight away who calls their mother a prostitute etc. Others might not even care if you say something like this. Then there are people who have disabled people in their family. They might be offended if you use "retarded" or "autist" as an insult. Others, that are not "affected" wouldn't care. Tbh, a lot of people around me use "gay" as an expression of "I don't like this thing.....it's gay". And I don't lecture them how "disrespectful" this is every day. I just don't do it myself.

You see where I am heading. I don not approve of a system that randomly picks out words that "offend more people than usual" and completely "bans" them. I approve of a system that treats any form of insult equally and punishes those who do it frequently.

There is a time when your life gets stressful, you're frustrated and just lash out in one game. One game out of hundreds, thousands. In that time, you do not process "am I allowed to say this one thing I have in my head or do I get banned for this?", you're just angry and frustrated and all of this transfers in a text that mirrors your inner anger and instinctively uses the foul language you grew up with and used to say when you are angry. Now, if you grew up an place which, unfortunately, used to use "gay" of "%%%" on a regular basis, you will just instinctively say that. Well, how unfortunate. You're banned now. Guess who didn't get banned? The one that consistently ruins a lot of games by aggressively harassing their teammates for being "dumb" "inting" "useless" etc. They might tilt way more people, ruin more in-game experiences. But nah, they will get a chat restriction first. Maybe another one. And only if they continue after that, they will get a permanent ban. See the problem here? I do see a huge one.

If we include instantly banning someone, I either want people that ruin games by calling someone an inter and a useless idiot to be banned instantly as well, or treat them equally and give both an equal chance by FIRST chat restricting them. Picking on one person and attacking him by calling him bad and useless is just as bad as telling someone he's a %%%. It's just a different choice of words.

Telephone Booth9/23/2018, 10:53:50 PM4 votes

Oh no you cant say %%% in your video game ugh its not fun anymore!!!

CharDeeMcDenniz9/23/2018, 9:20:49 PM3 votes

not reading all that but i will say that if you were in a group where you all knew each other, obviously someone didnt like your joke

Better Jungler9/23/2018, 10:49:17 PM2 votes

Yes, it's fucked up that you lost season rewards being at such a high rank, but bronze silver and gold get the same type of punishment, so I guess its ultimately fair... You used words that are zt. so it's really hard to feel bad for you. Mature your vocabulary, take this as a learning lesson.

Also, you could potentially grind out the rank on an alternate account, and recieve rank rewards on that account.

MegaLobunny9/24/2018, 1:44:14 AM2 votes

You said ZT words which goes against Riot's TOS which you agreed to. shrugs it doesn't matter if you weren't using it against anyone in particular or in a derogatory way (though I would argue that naming a TT comp after a slur is pretty fucked up so I'm side eyeing whoever actually named it that).

SonicAF9/24/2018, 8:21:24 AM1 votes

It's a very important topic. Can you get banned for the f%%%%t-word or the n%%%%r-word if you use it in team chat, but get reported by the enemy team?
