Chat Restricted for playing Maokai Support

I recently got back into League of Legends after a year or so away and I started playing Support Maokai. Was doing pretty well with it too, breezed through placements, 8-3 overall, account elo seems to be in low plat.

I'm playing my 12th ranked game, and bot lane isn't going so well. ADC dies to a level 2 all-in while he's still level 1, then a jungle gank goes bad, and there's not much we can do in lane afterward. It happens, cant win em all.

Team is EXTREMELY toxic. ADC is raging and me and jungle, our jungler seems chat restricted, but with the few messages he gets he's raging at me and ADC, top lane is raging in general.

As game progresses, top laner and jungler decide to focus their rage on me. Both say that playing Maokai support is trolling and reportable. But Mao support is pretty legit-- E does crazy damage without any items, all four abilities are crowd control, and again, at this point I'm 8-3 with it. I wouldn't be playing it in ranked unless I thought it was something I would win with.

I wasn't toxic in chat even as ADC and top spewed rage, and I never inted or AFK'd. But after the game, they still insist that playing Maokai support is inherently reportable.

I shrug it off, go into my next game, and it turns our they're right, and I'm chat restricted.

I get the chat logs, and it's only that game. Nothing else, no second game, just four angry teammates who decided that Maokai support was a troll pick and reported because of it.

Is this the way it is? Pick something even slightly off-meta and you can get banned? Because if that's the policy these days then I'm happy to go play other games. I'd really like to have a Riot member weigh in on this.

You did not get punished for playing Maokai Support. As you said, Maokai Support is a legit thing, and it isn't punishable - but if it was, you would not have gotten a Chat Restriction, you would've been given a 14-day ban on the first offense.

You got a Chat Restriction because of your chat behavior - I would personally suggest you post your chat logs for peer review, because there is clearly something in them you might be overlooking.

Maokai support you say? 80% of my matches, I play Maokai support. I've never been chat restricted for it. The last time I was chat restricted several seasons ago, it was for being an asshole.

You don't need to worry about people reporting you for no reason. The system has the ability validate the reports and false reports get tossed out.

Therefore, there is no need for you to be toxic in response to their toxicity. Just brush it off.

You entire chat log is you arguing with your teammates. That's what you got penalized for, not your champion selection. If someone says something rude and you lack the self control to not respond, mute them. Then, after the game report them.

Let's say you were griefing with Maokai.

Getting a chat restriction for a non-chat related behavior (griefing, leaving) doesn't add up. Likely if you were punished for griefing you'd have been suspended in some form. This would be like muzzling a dog for peeing on my bed.

You can appeal to Riot support if you truly were not toxic. However, recognize that if you said even the slightest negative thing once, that will be justification for the punishment.

You didn't get chat restricted for playing a champion. You get CHAT restricted for CHAT behavior.

I can already see it in my head. Those premades started flaming at you for picking maokai, and instead of muting them and going about your game, you flamed back and gave their reports a chance to actually screw you.

Next time keep the chat off.

I play all kinds of jacked up supports. You were punished for being toxic, not your support pick. The fact that you still haven't posted your chat logs, or included them in your OP, seem to imply you already knew that.
