Report system abuse

Hi all. First of all, I would like to say that I've been playing LoL since beta, while nobody knew what it was back then. I supported Riot (mostly some donations here and there) while it gained popularity. It was just a nice alternative to Dota that I played since it was released as a WC3 mod and began what we know today as moba. Well, I think its time for me and my friends to leave LoL. What I say here is not only my opinion, but the opinion of every other LoL player playing with me since then.

The report system gets abused all over. There is much more weight for a report based on "toxicity", than for ... anything else. You can troll around the map, you can go afk, you can feed, as long as you (god forbid) don't tell someone how what they are doing is wrong - you will be ok. I mean, it is ok to be bad at the game, as long as you listen to your team. Although 90% of games are ruined because of one (not a noob, because a noob cares for how he effects the team) stubborn troll - there is literally no tool for me as player to report him. You don't want to offend some "special snowflake", just because the other 90% of your time spent in the game turns into frustration, right? RIGHT??? All is left is to wait for that 1 in 10 game that is going to be 5v5. I did my best in other 90% to make this game a better place, by calling my teammates to cooperate, but enough is enough.

Today, two of my friends and I had another such, frustrating game. Our "support" left bot since minute 3, was running around the map doing absolutely nothing, fed the enemies, then was afk for a couple of minutes. When he came back he made sure that the entire team knows what he thinks of us. He finished the game after 30 minutes with a score of 0/6 and 9 wards. 9 CARL!! As a jungler I placed more.

Like I said, it is ok to be a bad player (maybe I'm bad as well), as long as you try to play the game in the favor of your team. He knew there is nothing four of us could do to report for what he did, because although he wasted our time, he wasn't "toxic". Well maybe I was. I made sure that he knows that what he does is bad for the team. Everybody told him that, but I may have used some stronger words. Yes, I wish I wouldn't have to, but turning 90% of your time into frustration makes it impossible to stay "nice" to trolls all the time. Riot did nothing to prevent this situation (the same situation we encounter 90% of our games). I have many ideas of how it would be possible, but I'm not the one being paid. Riot doesn't care about me having fun in LoL. Riot does care about "special snowflakes" not being offended.

So after this another frustrating game - I was the one being banned for two weeks. The message is clear - "we consider your idea of a good cooperative game as crap." It is far not the first time I feel that way. Every other LoL player I know and play with on almost daily basis would prefer options for report for trolling over report for "offensive language." You can always mute someone, but you can never... switch your trolling teammate or whatever (some vote for kick to replace him with a bot).

Some of you may say - "Great! One less toxic player in LoL". Well, good luck playing with "polite trolls" community. I'm out.

Behaviour like you just outlined, unfortunately, isn't preventable.

And because of many complex variables, people can, and often will, turn into trolls at the drop of a hat if you treat them badly.

The answer to this, from a player perspective, is much like the age old adage, Don't Feed the Trolls. Accept the fact that your game will be difficult at best, and work with what you have.

Additionally, Player Support has specific dropdown menus for this. Report them. Give op.gg links. Put a digital face to a digital name. Behaviour like intentional feeding and subtle trolling cannot be detected by machines, because machines aren't behaving like that. We've a ways to go before this is a thing that can be insta-banned.

We have to be reactive to a growing problem. I see more people declaring that they're going to turn into trolls because they got banned for saying words they agreed not to say when they made their account. People are deliberately causing more problems and in turn making their own experiences worse.

Accountability is important. Riot, I'm absolutely positive, knows that this is a problem. I have no doubt that they're trying to find ways to get this problem addressed.

But what we seem to lack right now, is patience and good sense to not make the problem worse before they can make it better.

There is not "more weight" given to toxicity. It is just that toxicity is black and white. What you wrote in chat is what you wrote in chat - period.

For AFK, trolling, etc, punishments are based on intent. Players don't get banned for being bad or having an emergency come up. There must be evidence beyond any reasonable doubt that it was intentional. This avoids punishing innocent players for innocent actions.

I dont think theres more "weight" on toxicity, considering the lowest offense is a chat restriction, while the lowest punishment for griefing, trolling and inting is a 14 day ban. I think youre confusing weight with how easy it is to detect. Its giving you a false impression. The most extreme toxicity will net you the basic punishment for gameplay offenses, so saying toxicity has more weight is pretty objectively wrong.

I wish they could/would ban trolls more often. Inting, imo, should be an insta permaban. But thats scary because you have to confirm intent and permabanning someone for playing poorly seems a bit extreme. As for toxicity, I dont really care about it. Whether there are rules against it or not, doesn't really affect me because I would never trash someone for not wasting enough of their own time to get good at a pointless video game. Thats just some major douchebag nerd shit, so I have no problems with their rules. Meh. Take it or leave it. You choose leave it apparently. Good for you.
