In Game Trash Talking is Healthy for the Game

A lot of people get salty about in-game trash talk, but I think it's fun and necessary for the game. Before I go further, allow me to point out there is a difference between trash-talking and being toxic or abusive towards your opponent. For example, let's say you had a 1v1 and outplayed your opponent for a kill. If you allchat something like "rekt" or "#outplayed", that is non-toxic, competitive trash-talk. However, in the same scenario, if you say something along the lines of "you're garbage dude", it's toxic because you're being demeaning. Trash talk is good because it can help you get a mental edge over your opponent, or in the inverse, push you to play even better. In a game the other day I was getting beat in lane and I was starting to get frustrated. My opponent went into allchat twice and said something to me. Now I could've got salty but instead I took that and used it as fuel. Not only was the lane even after that, but I bested him when it came to skirmishes and teamfights. I then proceeded to say the same things he said earlier. If he didn't say something earlier I may not have thought "fuck this guy he needs to get destroyed". Instead I may have just internalized the frustration. Also, if you notice your opponent is tilting, things like a simple "?" when they make a bad decision or "thanks for the leash" when you steal a camp or dragon can tilt them even further. And before anyone says "oh its only cuz its a video game people talk trash people don't do that in real life lulz". Bologna. Sports players talk trash to eachother all the time. If you believe otherwise it just shows your lack of knowledge on the subject. Watch some NHL mic'd up if you do, or just play in a recreational sports league. You'll see. So I'd like to hear your thoughts on the subject. When is it ok to trash talk? What is considered good trash talk? What kind of things are taking it too far? TLDR: Trash talk is good mkay. Just don't make it toxic or abusive, and don't get salty; get revenge.

difference is those pro players dont tell others to kill themselves or hope they get cancer where as the pea sized brain community of League thinks insults and verbal abuse is good for the game and say its just some trash talk and there is a clear difference

But nobody has an issue with the trash talk you described.

It's the demeaning toxic talk that people dont like.

Talking trash isn't healthy for the game.

Saying 'rekt' or #outplayed isn't trash talk, that's being friendly with your opponents.

Calling someone a fucking retard is trashtalk. Saying your mother should have swallowed you is trash talk.

Actual trash talk IS abusive.

When is it okay to trash-talk? NEVER. I don't care if trash-talking contains even 1% of toxicity, it is never beneficial at all for the team affected.

That's just it though, even in professional sports (and not just esports) trash talking has it's definite limits. If you cross that line then you need and deserve to be held accountable for it. From Ulanopo's Knowledge Base:

Trash talk is part of all competitive sports. It happens all the time in the pros.

Yes and no. Yes, trash talk occurs, but it has definite limits. Most of the things that are punished in game (racial, ethnic and homophobic slurs, sexism, etc.) would also earn you a hefty fine in professional sports.

It's bad sportsmanship and definitely tells you about the character of the person applying it instead of keeping their mouth shut and talk trash by how well they perform.

So many professional athletes are these POS you are talking about. They have no idea how much it takes away from the morale of their teammates and their performance from having to be associated with this POS in the first place. They are usually referred to as locker room cancers and are traded over and over until they find a place that will tolerate it, although never fully tolerated anywhere. Trash talk will never be good for any game.

Just an example but I used to love to watch Bryce Harper play baseball until he disrespected the game. I wish Pap would have put him through the wall. Now I won't watch the POS or buy Under Armor shit. Manny Machado is another POS who is bad for the game. These little children make a ton of money for being good at a game but can't be good at being a human being without opening their cesspools.

I keep my trash talk inventive. As Veigar, I do unload my 'get dunked' speech at the beginning and every time I R someone to death. As Cho'gath, I love going :(poppy) :(opp) :(p) :9 every time I devour someone to death.
