GDPR and cheating bans

This isn't a thread to bash nor defend anyone, I'm just plainly asking a question. So please, don't bombard me with 'disagreement' downvotes, just because you only read the title. I've never gotten banned for anything either, so this is not a plea for anything.

So currently Riot doesn't disclose any information about a ban for cheating.

Atleast for consumers in the EU, wouldn't Riot have to publish the data on why they got punished due to cheating? I understand doing so would open the door for cheaters to more easily create new cheats, so I'm wondering how Riot gets around the GDPR for these things?

I assume that this data counts as personal information, and that Riot stores it. They'd have to store it, at least for a while so that anyone banned for cheating can have a support representative look and verify if it's a false positive, right?

I'm really just looking for someone smarter than me to answer these questions. Though, maybe I should post it on EU boards instead.

I don't think they'd have to do this for two reasons:

  • The information Riot has probably isn't personal information - that is, it does not uniquely identify a specific person. (If it did, keeping banned players from returning would be done)

  • Revealing that information would be detrimental to the operation of any anti cheating system. Given that Valve, VAC, and friends don't have to reveal their inner workings when they give a cheater the boot, it's likely that Riot doesn't have to either.

No. The GDPR only protects your personal information. Riot is under no obligation to disclose why they terminate an account, in EU or anywhere else. See the Terms of Use.

2.1.2. Us.We may terminate or suspend your account if we determine, in our sole discretion, that: (c) doing so would be in the best interests of our community, the Riot Services, or the rights of a third party.

They can ban any account for any reason. Nothing can protect you from that.

2.2. What happens if my account is terminated? If your account is terminated, you’ll no longer have access to it, including any of the associated data or content (e.g., champions, skins, Riot Points, etc.). You’ll not be entitled to any refunds and we’ll have no liability to you.

I feel like you don't understand what qualifies has "personal information". In fact, the only "personal information" Riot has about you is your email. They may also have your credit card information, and other linked accounts. If that's the case, you can ask for that to be deleted. ######I don't know if they do that automatically.

In any case, they don't have any other tangible information about who you are, so the GDPR law isn't an issue.
