AFKers and the fallacy of systemic abuse

We've all seen the occasional rage post on the boards that is 40% expletives, and all rage. Usually it's someone who just had a series blown by an AFK player, and all manner of suggestions go flying:

"ONE AFK SHOULD BE THE ACCOUNT IS DELETED!"

That blind rage that makes them sound like the lovechild of Warwick and Sion. And to make matters worse, these posts are often met by the cool, reserved responses of the faux intellectual saying something to the effect of "But the system would be too easily abused, you silly billy. We could never do that!"

  1. Yes you could.
  2. May every series you enter be plagued with trolls. Stop saying this to people who just need to vent. You're a monster. And not the cool kind.

So to be clear, you can't actually delete the account of everyone who AFKs. Power outages alone make this a ludicrous position. But one of the other common solutions can be implemented, and so long as we're willing to endure a 3 month period of turmoil, it can lead to long term prosperity.

  • Just disregard the game for anyone in a series who had an AFK players on their team.

Now I know what you're going to say, because I wrote responses 1 & 2 above. So save them, and lets get to the heart of the matter. The system will be exploited. But this is easily trackable, bannable, and over the long term, works itself out. Here's a few arguments for you to chew on before you call me stupid:

A. The system is already being abused, it just benefits the delinquent. You're worried that a player might rig the system in favor of preventing a loss. Why do you care so much about that, and not the player helping to ensure the loss for 4 other people by leaving? it's likely because it's the system you have. But just because it's currently the way things are doesn't mean it has to be.

B. The difference between the two riggings is stark. One tilts a game toward one outcome for the player in a series. The other just says "this wasn't an accurate test of your talent." Do you truly believe that a bad player is going to be able to use this system to climb their way to a rank they don't deserve? I don't mean one bracket up, I mean to a different tiers. They aren't, and you and I both know it.

C. First of all, the player that keeps yielding leave buster registrations isn't going to be around for long. It's also not going to help them in non-series games. So AFKing in a regular ranked match is still going to yield an LP loss. And since there aren't series before you're demoted, the chances that an inappropriately climbing player gets to stay in the bracket they jumped up to (illegally) is slim.

D. Bans for the player who keeps AFKing in series games likely duo-queued with someone. Why not ban them both after 5 instances of Series AFKs (per 100 games). Surely there's an opportunity to track long-term exploitation, but that's Riot's axe to grind. I'm simply talking about the short term mitigation of trolls.

E. I'd like to mention where this rule will not come into play, because I've been on the internet for awhile now, and there seems to be currency in completely ignoring what's written in favor of looking like a genius by pointing out some absurd flaw that isn't in the argument made:

  1. Normal games
  2. ARAM
  3. Any of the 47 people playing Twisted Treeline
  4. Ranked Games that aren't a series
  5. Ranked games that ARE a series, but not for all the players (those players will not be effected)
  6. Blind Pick Games
  7. Love Games
  8. Old Greg
  9. Laughing Fish
  10. Rotating Game MOdes

One very quick observation: Counting wins due to afks but not counting losses due to afks effectively tilts the chance to win in the favor of everybody in a series. And that's disregarding the fact that afks do not only cause losses, but "lost games" make people afk (meaning that not all games with an afk are unjustly lost). Since series are essentially "repeated experiments" that effect your suggestion would have on the chance to win is even amplified in turns of chance to pass a series.

Anyway. The heart of the matter is not the possible exploitation of the system (which while being a legtimiate worry, has never been Riot's argument against loss forgiven on afks), but the effect such a system has on the behaviour of players.

Let's start with the obvious: Asking people to afk. Asking people to afk has been a thing in every game I ever played that had some kind of compensation for afks. And while toxicity is a problem already, giving people a potential benefit - and thus incentive - for bullying others is not the way to fix it.

But even without that, you are creating the absurd situation where somebody who's in a series can pretty much stop giving a shit about a game, the moment somebody is being afk for too long. Now that in itself is problematic, but it becomes straightup catastrophic because only that player can stop giving a shit about the game. Everybody else on the team who isn't also in a series will still want to salvage the situation as they will have the loss count.

Now this is just the passive portion of the problem... let's dive into the really problematic mindsets this change could create: As I mentioned earlier people are more likely to afk on lost games, especially when they are frustrating. So... if I'm convinced the game is lost and I'm in my series, the best course of action might be to find some low-key way of trolling my team to the point where one of them gets fed up with the game and leaves. I'm not one of the people that claim Riot doesn't care about trolls, but it's clear that detecting trolls is still quite a challenge.

Speaking of detection: When does an afk count as an afk? Currently Riot tries to keep it secret, so people don't try to be just about as afk as they can be without punishment. And to avoid people doing that intentionally to troll people in series, it would have to stay that way. Meaning you are trading off transparent moments of frustration for complete and utter frustrating moments where you would have deserved a loss forgiven but somehow didn't get it.

So with that in mind, here's the list of pros and cons:

Con:

  • Minor risk of lasting negative effects on the integrity of the ranking system for everybody
  • Major risk of lasting negative effects on community behaviour as a whole

Pro:

  • Mitigation of short term noise in the ranking of individual players

If you believe that's worth it, then that's your opinion and that's that. But in my opinion it's not a good idea to risk long term problems for the sake of mitigating short term problems.
