What I learned from my 14 day suspension

Greetings everyone, I figured that the player behavior team as well as moderators / players freshly banned might find this post somewhat amusing.

I will include a TL;DR: near the bottom, but for those who like to read, I will elaborate a bit here.

So after 2 years of playing League of Legends and never even being chat restricted before, I ended up getting my account a 14 day suspension after a chat restriction due to toxic communication. I came here to the forums looking for feedback, yet still on the defensive because I truly felt at that time that the punishment did not make sense because the reported chat log in question was probably one of the tamest, least toxic logs that have been linked for someone who actually got banned.

Thanks to some of the people here, I learned that it was not anything I said in particular, it just so happened that my "passive aggressive" or "mildy toxic" nature (which I personally attribute to being in pain due to serious health problems) over a large amount of games can sometimes add up to the value of one egregious over stepping of boundaries. I will admit that if I wasn't being a dumb ass and knew that my $2000 invested account was in danger of a ban, I definitely would of never opened my mouth in chat.

Other than that, I have some fresh air for you guys to breathe in here!

As you all could probably guess, since I am addicted to League of Legends like many of you here, I decided that 2 weeks of Starcraft just wasn't going to cut it, so I made a smurf account.

If you guys read one part of this entire post, I suggest this section be it because I had an epiphany while playing sub level 30 draft.

Whenever you make a brand new account, for those of you who do not have a smurf or have never needed to make one, you are lumped in with other "new" players. Some of these players have no clue what their champions abilities do, or even how to properly buy items and move their champion, let alone farm with any type of consistency. Every other game there are usually 2 AFK's on each team.

One of the main things I noticed in this setting is that every couple games or so, there would be another smurf like myself, who had been banned due to toxic behavior. It then dawned on me what super low elo really was.

Usually 1 smurf on each team, with 4 afk bots. I was in this particular game as Ezreal bot and I was vs a Yasuo mid. The game was literally smurf vs smurf.

Guess what happened? I got destroyed.

I never truly got to realize and acknowledge how TRASH of a player I actually was. Could I have carried that game? Yes I could have. I had a lead, I had the items, I had the scaling. But I still lost to this Yasuo smurf. Basically what I am trying to say is, the level of play at that level is so bad that you literally don't flame team mates because you never had expectations for them in the first place since they are new players.

Its a given at that elo to have 2 AFK's on each team at times. It never crossed my mind once to say something negative or rude to any of my team mates. I knew the one way we would win that game is if I outplayed him, and I didn't.

This has completely opened my eyes to my own skill level and that if I couldn't beat that Yasuo, then I have NO ROOM to ever say anything to anyone in this game. I really think that sometimes, some things do happen for a reason. I gained something valuable out of my suspension. I also got reminded of this lesson when a 0/7 Cho'gath ended up winning us a game by hitting an excellent Righteous Glory engage at their inhibitor turret. He didn't tilt, he didn't give up, and he didn't flame his team mates. Maybe if I would of said something rude to him it would of broke his psyche and he might have given up. Instead though, he ended up making the game winning play that we finished off.

TL;DR:

Getting suspended for 2 weeks taught me more about myself as a player than I have learned in my entirety of my time playing this game. Low elo is usually Smurf vs Smurf with 4 bots each, half of which are AFK. In that situation it is a 1v1 basically, and if you lose, that means you got outplayed. If you got outplayed, it's because you made a mistake and if you're making mistakes you are playing bad, if you are playing bad then you have no room to talk to anyone in this game about their performance. Let alone in a rude or negative fashion.

Now instead of getting upset at my team, I am that guy who says "GJ", "NJ", "Lets go!" and I help my team mates shake it off when they accidentally run it down from time to time. I have even broken up a few serious flame wars (that 100% would result in bans if reports were made) into winning games.

Bottom line I learned my lesson and because of this, I will never be suspended from my favorite game again. Thanks for reading guys! Much love. <3

I've made smurfs before to help/teach new friends trying to join the game.

What I've learned is that I get stomped 10x harder on a lvl 1 account in blind pick, than a lvl 200 account in gold/plat solo queue.

What I learned from my 2 permabanned accounts: Don't type in chat at all, if you're tilted just leave the game, been doing it for months 0 punishments [slayer-jinx-catface]

honest question, why do you play this game?

you dont chat so it's not the team aspect, you quit every time the game is going against you so it's not the competitive aspect...

genuinely curious, why are you here?

That's a very good question I asked myself dozens of times, well il try to say this as best as I can;

Simply put, I'm very addicted to this game, it just seems no matter what I always end up playing this game, since 2012 X-mas when it was just a game to play with friends it became a lot more, something I really started to enjoy and it lasted for some time...then after 4-5 years after Riot reworked almost every champion I used to enjoy to play (Talon Katarina XinZhao Rengar Fiora these are just a few) and even my OTP Darius who thank God I still liked and sadly today it's the only champion I play, looking back season 3 and 4 I can't believe how diverse my champion pool was and now its only 2-3 champs lol, and how much mobility and damage and CDR has been added to the game, well it became something else, something I play not for fun, because I'm addicted and so as my dissatisfaction of the games balance pretty damn annoying I became super toxic as I am even today. The comebacks are not possible in this game anymore, the game no longer takes any skill to play whatsoever. You need to pray to God you don't get 1 bad person on your team because if you do it's all over by 9th minute.

So to answer your question, I'm here because I can't stop playing this game for some reason, no matter what. I was like a real fat no lifer back then, it was school, league, sleep, repeat. Then I started going out you know, clubs, alcohol, weed, all that good stuff, I'm still playing League, I started a relationship with a girl I like, I'm still playing League, I started college that is super fcking hard, I'm still playing League ;)

most colleges or universities have an on-campus counselor, you should talk to them.

not only are you continuing to do something you clearly dont enjoy, but you are now ruining the game for others that actually DO enjoy it, for seemingly no reason at all...

dont be that guy man, you talk about how you're "growing up" in other areas of your life, why not here too.

Lol, seriously. Even though 9/10 times that I ever low key flamed someone it was because they were verbally abusing me with no provocation in chat or griefing, I actually thought I was good at the game. Riot basically said "You can't be bad while also having a bad attitude. Choose one.", I chose both and got a vacation. A super humbling, mind opening vacation.

Now that I know I am not as good as I thought I was, I no longer flame people for any reason. Keep in mind when I say the word flame, I mean heavy criticism of someone's game play. Nothing personal. I really found that I get triggered by bad teammates less and I am overall enjoying the game more than I was before.

I am not gonna lie, I still get triggered and tilted at times, but the difference is that I now know that pressing Enter could possibly make you lose your account, lol. So I would say an overall positive. LULW

what I find works really well for me is that regardless of whatever mode I am playing, be it normal or ranked (they each have their own separate MMR ratings), I will win 40-60% of all games I play and I will lose 40-60% of all games I play. That's simply how the ELO or mmr matching system works. No one can have 100% win rate or 100% loss rate (unless you do it on purpose) over sufficient amount of games.

Whenever I get a flamer, troll, inter, afk-er, or someone who simply got wrecked and unintentionally feed excessively, in my mind, I simply write the game off as part of that 40-60% loss rate I simply cannot avoid. It will happen. I WILL lose games, many of them, 40-60% of them. I am not too bothered by a loss due to any reason, be it outplayed, outmatched, troll, inter, afk, whatever. I don't expect to have a win rate of 100% so a loss is something I cannot avoid. There's no need for me to delve into the reason why I lose.

Don't get me wrong. I do get tilted, especially when I am trapped in a game I've already written off as a loss but unable to surrender so I can move on to the next game tilt-free. I don't ever feel the need to flame or call for report or criticize anyone. I make mistakes just like everyone else. I WILL lose many many many games. One or two or 1000 losses make zero difference to the many thousands of games I have already played since Season 3.

Smurfs should get banned if they willingly join ranked games at lower tiered games. I know that you can learn by observing and playing against higher skilled players, but usually the gap difference is so great that this really doesn't help at all. Not only that, but it also creates a very unbalanced game for anyone not doing this. It's like fixing a game in order to get the result you want. In my opinion, this is just as bad as cheating or using a script or whatever. I join ranked games in bronze or whatever thinking that I will also be against others near my skill level. While this does happen once in a blue moon, the majority of ranked games are littered with people bragging about their diamond or platinum account. People smurfing have absolutely no business joining games against lower tiered players. It's bullying.

You see that's the issue here and mainly why I made this thread. Before I got suspended, I was not enjoying the game and I found myself getting triggered more and more often with poor performing teammates, griefers and overall generally toxic players.

The literal main cause for my negative attitude was due to a strong delusion that I was much better at the game than I really was. The absolute moment I realized that I have so much to improve on and countless flaws as a player, I just instantly started approaching the game differently. Now I am enjoying the game again.

Its not a meme. I was going down a bad path and luckily I got the wake up call that unfortunately, some here on the forums did not get.

Yes there are some games that are unwinnable by the law of averages alone. In the majority though, you have the ability to make an impact on the game. Unless you played perfectly, which is near impossible, you yourself should always be the first person you criticize and put under a microscope. Most of the time I catch a loss, 9/10 times I weigh my performance as an overwhelming contribution to the result. Due to this, I rarely focus on other's performance unless they are literally inting, which at that point we have a IFS to handle those players. Because of all these factors combined, I no longer feel the urge to criticize others. I hope this was somewhat helpful for others that are in the same boat.

Just don’t go back to your toxic ways! Sometimes a wake up call is all we need.
