Am i allowed to play how i want?

Am I allowed to pick what champ I want for my lane? Is there some rule I'm unfamiliar with that says that I have to choose a certain role for a position or am I allowed to try to use whatever champion, masteries, runes, etc. As long as I'm doing my best to win the game while playing?

If so how do I respond to people who purposefully limit my options by banning who I choose or complain about my choices to incite a team or game wide report?

What you are refering to is called playing off meta or breaking the meta. It is not against the rules and no amount of reporting will get you in trouble for it.

To combat people banning the champ you are going to use simply do not select a champion when displaying pick intent.

That said, you will likely still get flamed and have an increase in people dodgeing matches.

You're being really vague in this post so it's hard to say if it's acceptable behavior.

First of all, is this ranked or normals?

Second, where you playing the champion in the role they were designed to play? For example, if you tell me that you want to play full AD Veigar as our ADC then I don't think that's acceptable unless the rest of your team is OK with it.

Third, you can choose what runes and mysteries you want but if you make choice that are clearly less powerful (i.e. not taking a keystone) then your team has the right to make a comment on it.

There's a fine line between being creative and being a troll, kind of like there's a fine line between genius and insanity. You'll need to provide more info before I can decide what side of the line you belong on.

As several people have already said, it's okay to make an off-meta pick. Some people will be upset. Some will even report you. The system does an excellent job of weeding out false and malicious reports.

That said, it's worth considering that League is a team game and there are some ways that you can make your choices easier on your teammates:

  • Go in with friends, especially if you want to try a weird jungle, marksman or support pick.
  • Explain what you're doing and that you have been successful with it before.
  • Understand if people disagree with your pick.
  • Sometimes, you may want to bend to your teammates.
  • "IGNORE, REPORT AND MOVE ON" whenever you encounter toxicity.

ever wonder why you are bronze? I mean this seriously, cause this thread is an example of it. I do not care if i get down voted on this. This whole line of thought i can play what i want, where i want, when i want is a typical bronze player problem.

Meta exists for a reason and you are not proving anything by occasionally beating other bronze players.

In theory if you did bad enough the argument could be made that you are trolling rank (hurting team mates) with your champion picks and throw games with your performance. If enough people reported (over X games) it Riot would eventually look at the case, cause you keep popping up but the system can not understand why.

I play who I want to play. If you ask around, it's why I cannot advance in rank. Whether I agree with that is debatable.

That is just simply something you have to deal with or just play meta champs. I personally get a little frustrated when people play off meta, as most people do, but I have had some do very well with it and won games for me. Good luck man.

I don't think going off the meta is a bad thing, but I will definitely say that there is definitely a limit on just how much deviation there can be on a champion's intended builds and uses.

Example: ad vaigar. Sure you can try it if for some reason your team has a lot of magic damage and maybe only 1 physical damage doing champion. It might be worth it because your team might need more physical damage to counter the enemy team building high magic resist. At the same time though veigar's abilities all scale with AP, meaning that perhaps aside from event horizon and his ult, the other abilities are going to be sub-par in damage even with his free-ap Q ability. If you can actually get it to work, well then super! If not, well try explaining to your team what your intent was and that you were trying to counter the enemy team's build.

then we can have an example like this: AP Talon. All of talon's damage scales from AD, not AP. Not only that but without something like nashor's tooth his autos will do horrible damage, and even then none of his abilities will do any significant damage either. This is what you really call a troll build or even intentionally feeding because you're not helping your team with this, you're hurting your own team and helping the enemy team by giving them an easy fight and very likely an easy kill.

Before you try something unorthodox or off-meta, please do consider a few things to help you decide if something might work or if it's worthwhile:

  • what is it that you're actually trying to do?
  • is this going to help me against my lane opponent?
  • is this going to help me later in the game when we group?
  • does my team need a certain criteria filled to balance out our roles? more damage? maybe more cooldowns for crowd control? tankiness?
  • what is my champion and what does the champion's kit do or revolve around?

remember that you're not just playing by yourself but with 4 other people on your team. Don't forget they're there to try to have fun as well so don't ruin their time by hurting your own team's potential.

Making troll picks isn't trying your hardest to win?

Wickedfates2/9/2016, 5:00:30 PM1 votes

nope, like you said, just do your best, and try to have some fun =^D

idk how to respond to them though, sry.... if you figure out a good way pls let me know.... i used to have teambuilder for that

i guess we just try, pick the champ you want to play, play it how you want, and hope they dont flame you too badly.... and never respond negativly.... dont want to get banned for playing Teemo support

BLACK REALM GOD2/9/2016, 7:59:29 PM1 votes

Everyone here who has commented has said the same thing. Yes as long as you're sincerely trying your best. If that's the truth then why did two people from this post make a troll "response" post criticizing my question with the constant AD veigar comment that keeps being used as an example by using flamboyant language and unrealistic situations that practically never happen? Why am I getting at least 1 down vote per up vote for just simply asking a question? I think everyone in the league community needs to take a moment and think about what's been said here and honestly consider his or her own actions and how those actions are influencing negativity in other players. No one WANTS to lose. I promise you that is a fact. So why would anyone force themselves to lose? It's simple. For attention or revenge. Who are they getting attention from? Whoever acknowledges them. It could be friends or family watching them play. It could be twitch or YouTube viewers. It might also be you without knowing it just by simply attacking back and talking to them - they're being acknowledge. Who are they wanting revenge against? Maybe it's personal and they hate league of legends and want it to be the worst game in the world. Maybe it's because they lost their promos. Maybe it's because they got trolled. Or maybe it's just because you banned their champ even though they're on your team. Whatever the reason if the troll is getting what he/she wants then they're winning even if the team is losing. If league as a community stops embracing negativity and hatred as "okay in certain scenarios" then everyone will have a better time and those people who give into their urge to "troll" would get NO enjoyment from it. They would literally be forcing themselves to lose and no one wants to lose.

As for anyone who embraces the meta - do you honestly understand how the meta works? I'll explain as much as I can off the top of my head in another post. I was going to put it here but it ended up being way too long.

Hmm, I suppose it simply depends on your outlook. Of course you're allowed to play how you wish. The only problem comes in when you have a toxic attitude (attacking people who don't like your pick, forcing your way into a role, ect). The toxicity obviously goes both ways and it's not okay for people to harass you for playing something off-meta. There is also a bit of range considered appropriate for game modes. Normals are more accepting of strange decisions than ranked. Kindred adc is more accepted than full ap shyvana as an example. Kindred adc is acceptable for ranked but full ap shyvana isn't unless you're playing with a full group of friends. Anything goes in normals so long as you're friendly and are honestly trying. I say that you shouldn't play something too off meta with strangers in ranked for a reason. Ranked is more serious and you have no idea how the stranger feels. If they're uncomfortable about an ap shyvana and very serious about ranked, then your decision could ruin the game for that person right off the bat. That would make the whole game worse for the whole team. While you shouldn't make your decisions entirely based on a strangers thoughts (if they demand braum and you hate braum, ignore them), you should still take their ideas into account. This is a team game afterall.

Yes, you are allowed to play any Champion you please in any position so long as you make an effort to win the game. A lot of people won't agree with certain picks, so they might get upset at you for it and may even threaten to report you, but you cannot be punished for going off-meta and should feel no shame in doing so.

Just play the game and enjoy all the possibilities it has to offer :)

Anomander2/9/2016, 1:25:25 AM1 votes

You can play what you want where you want. Just have to try to win. People will rage. People will be toxic. People will report you.

It is not punishable. The reports get thrown out. Just don't respond in kind and you will be fine.

Z Statistic2/9/2016, 1:36:32 AM1 votes

Sure, you CAN, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD. It's not punishable, but it's dumb as fuck in a lot of situations. For more details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sBYxUj18sA

You are allowed to play how you want, there is no restriction, the vast majority of people you play with will think there is, and it is fine to ignore them. They are limited not only by their peers but by themselves, trapped into cookie cutter roles and false assumptions of what is "viable" and what "the pros dont do" and "there is a reason people don't do that."

Even Riot has address the public in previous updates telling them not to be afraid to be different in how you play. Play on my friend, play on. Sona/Lulu/Janna top4lyfe.
