Riot's discipline system too harsh? (push)

bump from a separate LoL post

tl:dr - Got tilted a few games a month before season ends, get penalized and dropped honor levels immediately. Unhappy with how RIOT handled the first time offence and am confident that I am not the only person who has got the shaft. Riot's support system is all out of whack, no communication between the RIOT team and the players suffer the consequences in the end. Suggestion: RIOT should give players a warning for their first time offence. Also the honor system must be veiled by Akali's shroud because no one has a clue how it operates.

Ok, although i doubt riot will do anything at this stage of the game, but I think I am speaking for the majority of players who hit a rough patch towards the end of the season and unfortunately suffered riots giant penalty-hammer of Demacia.

Yes, I fully admit that I went full tilt in a few games towards teammates who were not being team players and said things I probably shouldn't have said. Unfortunately for me, and other players i'm sure, this happened towards the end of the season which basically means you have a 0% chance of claiming the end of season rewards everyone works hard to get all season!

I have a few complaints about this...

  1. First and foremost, Why does RIOT go straight to the immediate demotion of honor (to 0 or 1 depending on severity)? If a player has never had ANY penalties in the past aren't players entitled to at least a warning? It would seem much more proportionate to issue the 10 (or more) game chat ban AND a very clear warning message saying something like "You have been unsportsmanlike in your previous games. This chat ban is your first and ONLY warning. Any future penalties against you will result in the immediate demotion of your honor level.. etc etc". To me this just seems more appropriate and tame as opposed to just sending someone straight to the electric chair --so to speak-.

  2. As the current penalty system is now, penalties hit 100% heavier to players hitting their 'rough patch' towards the end of the season as opposed to the beginning of the season. If a summoner experiences his/her first offense towards the start of the season, they have plenty of time to catch back up in honor and even still obtaining honor 5. That being said, if a summoner who shows unsportsmanlike conduct as a first offence towards the end of the season, all of their hard work goes up in flames and they are 99.99% chance not getting end of season rewards. Especially since there is absolutely no warning in place, where is the balance of penalties when it comes to when the offense was committed? As of now, riot is essentially saying that it is OK if you are unsportsmanlike during the beginning of the season, but don't do it towards the end or else you're screwed!

  3. It's like the RIOT support agents either are forced to read from script, or mind controlled zombies under the papa riot puppet master. Point is, not only were the agents of no help in the long run, but multiple agents told me (and other players) the completely wrong information! I've included 4 DIFFERENT Riot support agents that ALL told me completely different information, ultimately finding out that I had no hope to reach honor 2 after essentially wasting a week of my time grinding the hell out of league. I've included 4 separate images showing 4 separate tickets I've had the pleasure of speaking with riots support team... Image1: https://puu.sh/BNVzR/d9bd6c9fb0.png
First ticket, I was told to spam ARAM/co-op vs AI. Image2: https://puu.sh/BNVAH/822bafd89d.png Second one, different agent confirms advice and claims there is an honor boost activated? (maybe .001% honor boost LOL) Image3: https://puu.sh/BNVCY/e6152e8506.png Third one, a few days after blowing up ARAM/co-op games, I'm told those games are useless and pvp 5v5 is the way to go... I still have hope at this point.. Image4: https://puu.sh/BNVE9/1aab384ef5.png Final one, day or two later, Finally another support agent tells me I have 0 hope unless I want to become a basement troll for the next month...f me

Side tangent: I believe the so called 'honor boost' contributes almost nothing, if I had to assign a value to the 'honor boost', it probably gives a .01% increase in honor gain or some ridiculously minuscule amount. Reason: I played well around 150 games (yes, starting after my honor was unlocked) and after almost loosing all hope, I FINALLY saw honor checkpoint 1/3. If you're claiming there is an 'honor boost' just to make people feel better, then good on you all, makes us all feel so much better. To put this in perspective, at this rate I would need to play ~600 games JUST for one single honor level up (1 to 2). For additional clarity, for those 150 games I averaged at least 1 honor from a non-premade player per game.

That is a ludicrous amount of time to be spent just to get back to the baseline honor 2.

Thanks for reading! BurNing

*** To clarify what the poll submissions, Yes: Players should receive a warning for their first time offense. or No: The system is fine as it is. Sorry for the confusion ***

what about the people who get punished early on, busted their ass and reformed their attitude to climb back to honor 2?

would you have RIOT be lenient on just SOME people bc of when they decided to be toxic? just to spit in the face of those who ACTUALLY reform?

the crime is the crime and the punishment is the punishment, same for us all

I completely agree. I’ve played the game for awhile and hit a rough batch of bad teammates. I admit I was somewhat toxic and with no previous issue of toxicity or warning I received a 14 day ban. Yes a 14 day ban for my first time offense.

  1. Totally agree, Riot should warn people before punishing them. Riot doesn't even tell people why they were punished in a chat offense. Riot will link your entire chat log and not highlight any of it. Makes me think Riot is more interested in punishing than reforming.

  2. Agreed again. Some people are punished more severely, despite a lesser crime, because of the timing of their offence.

  3. Even Riot management will behave that way. I think it is a company policy.

So, the system used to have warnings. However, many people took the warnings the wrong way and thought they were punished. This led to a lot of "Why was I punished" tickers when people weren't punished.

As for it being harsher for those at the end of the season, well, there has been a cut off date for years/seasons. A punishment given or active after date x results in no rewards. In theory, the honor system is arguably more lenient in this regard. As someone who gets a chat restriction and demoted to honor 1 may possibly be able to recover in time; as compared to punished after cut off date before.

Next season we will have splits within the season. Sounds like you can get split points at Honor 1 still. Wouldn't be surprised if you had to be honor 2 for full season rewards though.

100 plus games, hours of your life spent just to prove that you’re reformed, not toxic for a video game hurts a lot :(

I think its time for Honor 3.0.

Dude, I 100% feel you on this one, just made a post myself at the advice of Riot and got down voted into oblivion. Just got chat restricted 3 days ago, the first time I've ever had any action taken against me in over 5 years of playing, and I'm locked at 1 honor. I'm not a toxic player by any means, almost never talk in chat, but a big losing streak with teammates harassing you every single game would get to anyone. Your post is a lot more eloquent than mine, really hope it gets some traction.

BurNing,

I left Forum due to many toxic replies when I tried to share the same opinions but in much aggresive way and a player I got to know on forum informed me about this post. I really appreciate you making some great points here. I went through all the comments and some were pointless to include in the topic, but I do see many valuable opinions here.

To share a brief information abour my experience, i was at honor level 4.2 and dropped to 1.0 on Oct 12th. I found out about it a day after when I logged in, and then there is not enough time to prove reformity even if this was my first penalty ever in years.

Some players did make a valid point that it is unfair to introduce a warning now that there have been players who already grinded honor level for the season rewards. My personal opinion is that the honor level system is a very drastic change that Riot made without properly examining the complaints and noises in advance. This is the very first time in League history that nothing matters but the requirement of having honor level 2. It is an extreme change in the context of how rewards were given out compared to all previous years. Rewards were not qualified if a player was banned on Augst or later and chat restriction was not a consideration.

I do agree banned players must be punished considering a ban is not the first warning. If 10 chat restriction is the mildest warning, there should not be a month or longer of reformity to be shown. The term 'reformity' is quite ironic because players who had honor level 4 or 5 earned it by demonstrating the 'sportmanship' behaviors for a long period of time. A champion with hundreds of games taken away does not simply get kicked out of a league because of a single or a couple bad games without a 'coaching' to indicate what was done wrong.

Threre has to be consquences in sequential order. 1 warning should either reset the honor level 2 or drop 1 level or 2 below, instead of dropping below the initial level regardless of the previous histories. And I personally was not very motivated or simply did not care much about honor level as there was no indication of active progress. I was able to make it up to honor level 4.2 from 2.0 in 3 or 4 months of playing and had never imagined how difficult honor level 1 would be like. There are many other posts in many different servers in respect to the honor level tied with ranked rewards, but Riot seems to not care as much. And the restriction is much harsher now since penalties are automated because the system detects swearing and will act upon it. It is game that requires time and effort and requires a competitive mindset. There will be times that players will get frustrated at each other as we dont pick our teammates most of the times. A player may be competitive enough trying to win a game and it may involve toxicity. If Riot is simply against any toxicity at all, I am not sure what mute or swear filter are for.

League of legend is a video game in the end that involves team communication a lot. Each player may have a different play style or behavior but Riot cannot simply control everyones behavior without any guidance. If I were to who is a better player between honor level 5 or a diamond, i would pick a diamond player as he put his effort and time with skills to win many games. With it said, toxicity is bad but a trolling player who is dragging 4 players down is much worse. Again, if toxicity is worse than trolling, Riot should have let me know before instead of taking the rewards away from me.

I apologize, I wrote this in a bit distracting environment and may jump to one point to another. I admit its horribly but really wanted to share my opinions as soon as possible. And I really appreciate your post.

Atleast they do not water board you.

the chat restriction IS the warning and if you don't heed it, the loss of honors will be the least of your worries
