Toxicity stopping new players

Your Neighbour·5/7/2019, 6:20:42 AM·26 votes·15,047 views

Introduced about 6 people over three month but all of them quitted from getting flamed in the chat for being new, there's no way someone playing first day know why one champion counters the other, all the 'new' people are mainly server hoppers, or banned people playing on different accounts.

League is not going to go boom and die but we are seeing a lot less new people from chronic toxicity to new players. The current ad being run on youtube actually pulled some of those people I introduced in but they ended up leaving anyway because that's definitely not a true reflection of what the league community is like.

tl;dr We need a total noob queue.

Its called riot should stop banning people for chats so they just come back upset that they were banned "unfairly" and perm ban trolls whoh say "f-it i hated the game anyway." For real though, yes there needs to be something fixed about it for new players.

Th3KindredSpirit5/7/2019, 7:22:33 AM6 votes

Yeah, this + new players playing against and with Smurfs is what makes them quit.

Padoµch5/7/2019, 7:42:14 AM6 votes

Good, we are helping people not sink into the hellhole this game become... Srsly, dont let them get into this game, there is nothing. HotS got free skins, maps that have nice modes, characters that we all love, its easy to grab and play since there are no items and such..

i made a post about this in depth.

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/general-discussion/ajT3TUP6-this-is-new-player-matchmaking-and-its-disgusting-and-my-opinion-on-why-it-cant-be-fixed

No one cared.

I honestly feel for you, and agree, because like i said in the post, when one of my friends said he wanted to start playing, i felt bad, knowing he wasnt gonna have a good time.

I wonder if those newly hired Diversity Officer will help keep new players stay lol

So your friends are made of pure snowflake if they getting butthurt of few words they threw at them. Sad.

Why didn't you introduce them to the mute button as well? I mean it feels like you did a clearly shit job on introducing them to the game...

Amor Omnia 5/8/2019, 12:33:04 AM3 votes

i definately agree. noobs should be quarantined

jocomotion5/7/2019, 2:03:43 PM2 votes

Let’s see 144 characters plus more being made Each with 4 abilities and one passive, and sometimes more Tons of items, some of which are useless on certain champions or ineffective Tower plates, towers, inhibitors, inhibitor towers, and the nexus each having their own attack/defensive patterns Dragons, Baron, and herald each giving unique buffs that you need to know

And you have to learn all THAT while being yelled at by people who are supposed to be on your side.

Yeah I don’t blame them.

Omnius Erasmus5/7/2019, 11:54:53 PM2 votes

I totally agree that there should be a "noob queue" where only sub-30s get grouped together. Yeah, toxicity is a major problem, but the toxicity is exacerbated by the fact that players are getting grouped together that have no business being grouped together. For example, I'm a level 13 (and I'm not smurfing or banned) and my last four games I was only with people my skill level (i.e. below level 20) ONCE. The toxicity won't magically disappear, but the frustration will be mitigated.

I want to get better -and I'm sure other noobs feel the same- but when I'm hard-carried by my team (who have hundreds more games under their belt than me) in a 15-minute game, how can I put what I'm learning into practice? Flaming people like me for being noobs isn't going to help. I get it, you're frustrated that you're stuck with a moron like me, but guess what: the feeling is mutual. I know I'm bad, but I'm trying to get better and I take all the useful feedback I can get.

so..... tl;dr NOOB QUEUE FTW!!!

roughvan5/7/2019, 1:56:40 PM2 votes

Riot can't solve that problem with banned players as league is free to play, anyone can make more accounts.

Im suggesting that when you introduce new players to the game, teach them to do /mute all every game, i do it even though im not new and can be considered to be one of the better players, it doesn't matter how good you get, you'll always be flamed. I've seen challanger players getting flamed. You can't always play a perfect game without any mistakes also there are players who will flame you even if you play well.

Sub level 30 players should never be matched with players above level 30, or if thats an issue make it 30-50.

I was leveling a second account a few months ago (it was awful) and was amazed at what slipped through match making. Level 200+ players in some cases, players with 500k or more mastery, and the classic - diamond players in sub30 games.

Myself and other decent players leveling up accounts could deal with these things on average but new players, low elo players, and players making accounts from bans could not. It was frustrating having to face highly skilled enemies with the additional weight of low skill allies.

If I was frustrated I couldn't imagine how awful it felt for the obviously new players.

[slayer-jinx-unamused] I agree, I was started nearly end of S8 and took my first 14 days ban when I was new and playing as support because I died many times and a group of premades acted very toxic to me then left me alone in bot lane as support. EUW is extremely toxic but players in NA more kind and friendly compared to EU as I experience. It was also same in Dota 2 and this was my main reason I drop it but I believe in Riot will improve this system for better to League. [sg-syndra] After disappointment of first ban I still keep played and improved myself really good then played with Plats and Diamonds even against a LCS player before calibrated on ranked. And find some really good and unique friends, they especially made this game more valuable and fun to play with them.

item 3340 So a game mode for new players would be really nice make them learn with guides to avoid such things"toxic players, smurfs, bans" before actually get into game teach them how to dodge skill shots, how to control creep wave, how to control map as sup, how to use pings correctly etc.

I agree, if you are mainly the cause of most losses in your matches. You should be shifted over to a grouping of people who also play with who are on equal playing fields. Also if your friends left due to "toxic" trash talking that punishment system is too strict. The snowflake mentality and PC culture that has infested the game is getting out of hand. Alot of people will agree that people can throw games and waste everyone's time in the match and get a slap on the wrist if that. The people who have to deal with the feeding match throwers game after game will finally snap and get a 14 day ban for hurting someones feelings... I am sorry but the game has TWO FUNCTIONS to prevent the salt... #1 MUTE OPTION!!! USE IT!! #2 PROFANITY FILTER!?!?! If you go out of your way to remove profanity filter and not use mute functions than you should not be allowed to report ANYONE for "abusive behavior". Games are games... People are going to get mad when people play like hot garbage, this game in particular is COMPETITIVE GAME PLAY. If no one gripes at you for playing bad you are not going to try and fix your problem!

As much as I hate to say this, I don't really think there's anything that can be done regarding toxicity towards new players. I'd love to be proven wrong, but after years of hoping that something would change... I've just given up.

I actually tried to bring three new players into the game this year... but none of them have stuck around. Figuring that they'd be treated like shit by the community, I even played a crap tonne of custom games with them, where it'd be the three of them against two bots and myself. We had fun for awhile, but they eventually felt ready for pvp.

Within three weeks, they all quit. Muting chat helped a bit... But it's pretty easy to be toxic in other ways. The obvious one being standing on the summoner platform dancing. (Adc's in particular ragequitting after a few minutes to make a Support play by themselves).

I wish RIOT saw this and did something about it but they really don't care, they are simply more focused on their money and selling than on improving the game. Recently I started playing the game and I really feel highly depressed because in each game someone starts telling me things just because I am learning. I haven't even reached lv 30 and I can already say that the pairing system is a huge garbage. In each game there's people who know how to play and simply destroy the game. If for RIOT this is considered a form of learning it is not. It is a way to destroy the morale of new players trying to learn and take them away from the game. On more than one occasion I ended up crying and wanting to stop playing. Too sad...

ZaFishbone5/8/2019, 7:50:27 AM1 votes

I mean, this is the community who basically denied that TF Blade said the N word even tho you could clearly hear hit in the clip, what did you expect. Toxicity is just part of who these ppl are. The most frequently upvoted requests on these boards are literally "stop punishing toxicity so much". Nobody is going to care about new players. Doesn't even matter in normals, you'll still just get flamed for the smallest mistake.

Challendgeder5/8/2019, 3:26:54 PM1 votes

The only reason I don't play fps is because it's hard learning against the head shot people <.<;

i think same concept applies here. If everyone is legitimately new I think there may be some queing issues. LIke time and such but I'd rather wait for a game that i can learn form then que and get stomped in game and verbally

Xyzen5/9/2019, 12:56:51 AM1 votes

Only thing you can do about Toxic players is /mute all and play the game how you want. I've played for 3 seasons and I'm just now seeing improvement (gold for the first time, not much but it's a high for me) in my skills because I no longer play what my team wants me to and I don't listen to toxic players. Smurfs are a bigger problem because you can't avoid them.

Bunnì5/9/2019, 5:51:55 AM1 votes

100% agree. I've just introduced a new player, he has been learning Vayne and Tris but it can be difficult to play as he simply doesn't know everything about the game, he has only been playing for 4 days. People on level 5 accounts expect him to know good places to ward, how to cs properly, when to go in, when to leave and everything about each champion. That's not his fault, nor should he be flamed by people who are meant to be at his skill level.

That being said, League is a free game and there is nothing that can really be done. The best thing we as their friends can do it get them as educated as possible about the game and get them out of that 1-25 level range where it's filled with bots and smurf accounts.

League was my first PC game coming out of Xbox 360 Voice Chat on CoD. There's nothing you can type that hasn't been said to me lol. Tbh I would rather the voice chat now that I think about it. At least people didn't have to afk to shit talk each other.

The other thing is, sometimes you have to learn how to thrive in toxicity. When someone was talking mad shit on MW2 Search and Destroy those were the games I went 10-0. At the end of the day what they said didn't matter because if they were on the enemy team they just got torn apart and if they were on my team they know they just got carried by someone they hate and get ego shot. Win / WIn.

Brought a friend to play during that...uh...new player missions that gave those companion poro emotes. They never touched this game before. Since they were new me and them had to do Blind Pick. Every option was mentioned except top (she didnt care where she went, so she waited to see what everyone else choose), so she took top. She picked a character that visually appealed to her, so she took Kayn top. Anyway she was having a hard time playing Kayn obviously. And the entire team was just flaming her none stop. Me and her tried to explain she was completely knew to the game, but the issues increased when she mentioned how she didn't know how to place wards, but they would have none of it as their only valid excuse was, "She played the tutorial she should know". Even when I did the tutorial 1st placing I just went through it just to get out of it and enjoy the game, I learned from playing, not the stupid outdated tutorial. We won the end by the way.

All in all, my friend was in tears and never wanted to play the game again. I felt bad bringing her to this game knowing how damn toxic the playerbase is...but I wanted the new emote/missions done...But it wasn't worth my friend hating herself and being brought to tears over a game she just started.

I think a good idea would be to have those 6 people all play together (5 at a time of course) . It will greatly limit toxicity bc you guys are all already friends. Thats how I started League of Legends. Noob player with Noob friends. I don't think a total noob queue would work because when I was a noob I was also a toxic asshole fresh out of Call of Duty.

funkdubious25/7/2019, 3:55:23 PM1 votes

Hey... put the tl;dr we need a noob queue in the subject line

I like the idea of a noob area, where for the most part <30 XP level players would reside. They could opt to stay in that area for as long as they like, but only matchmade with other noob players as well.

The noob players could vote a clear smurf account out of the noob area, and the smurf account goes into general population matchmake games.

Also, and here's the primary benefit of the noob area:

  • When "noob mode" is on, the game always highlights the tower ranges
  • Your designated lane is highlighted
  • Little blips to show minions that should be last hit, ie the health below 10% (still up to the noob to learn each champions attack damage to decide exactly when to last hit)
  • You can try any easy champion you want. Free rotation still applies but the champ select screen prioritizes the easy scale champions first. (Like Garen, MissF, Annie, etc)
  • Anybody who's reported as flaming (after verification) is knocked out of noob area. The idea here is if you're playing with friends that are new, and a jerk with a smurf account on tyour team bitches up a storm, that smurf account is kicked out of noob area. This also shows new players that the reporting system actually does work.
  • Also more helpful popups during the game to help encourage the noob players whats going on and whats recommended. Like your on bot lane and a drake is up, and levels are 8+ show a recommendation pointer to snag the drake.
  • You probably wont have many jg noobs, so maybe jg role can pull from general matchmaking (not sure about this one)

and so forth. Idea being help the noobs understand the game through helpful hints, training, a sectioned off area of the game from the general potential tryhard flamers
