The Problem With the Current System

I was recently banned; however, **I am not bothered by the fact that I was banned. I am not going to deny that I deserve to be banned; however, the game I was banned was a mistake. **The game was an ARURF game, and seeing as everyone seemed fairly funny, I started saying incredibly dumb things in chat. Everyone understood what I said and that in no way was anyone offended and almost everyone got in on it. Some things I said during the game that clearly indicated it was a joke included: "THIS IS MY PROMOS." This alone starts to show that I am kidding with all my comments. Then about half way through the game I again indicated it was a joke: "this is getting cancerous" "like no joke" "im getting triggered" Through the use of capitalization I was able to indicate when I was joking and when I was kidding; however, the current system ignores this completely. Then, once again near the end of the game I made clear jokes and made comments similar to that of Donal Trump: "WRONG. FALSE. FAKE NEWS..." Essentially, an instant ban system that only looks for bad words without context is incredibly poor system.

But, the problems don't end there. The system is based on the idea that people are actually going to reform without any form of rehabilitation. Punishing someone without giving a better way is only going to create total failure.** Riot, restricting what I can do on one account will not improve my behavior in game. The reason is simple: I can circumvent the system completely**. I am not going to sit in my chair the next two weeks and think "wow I need to be a better person to play a game", I am going to go about my daily life exactly as I already do. If I want to play league of legends, I will create another account which promotes another "toxic" behavior. Riot to "solve" one problem, you are only growing another.

In conclusion, I do not want my account unbanned, I deserve what I got (even if it was for the wrong reason); however, I am upset by the system as it doesn't help anyone. It is an ineffective system that needs a massive overhaul, but will likely never get one. You need rehabilitation, not just punishment. You need to look for context within the game, not just bad words. You need to ensure players cannot just create a smurf. While I may not be able to play on my main for two weeks, I will just hop on to my smurf and enjoy the game I have played for four years. I am not punished. I am not rehabilitated. I am still toxic. I am still going to play this game.

If you were banned someone reported you so cleaely everyone didnt realize you were joking. Do i think a majority of the community needs to grow a thicker skin. Absolutely and undeniably yes. But clearly someone took you serious.

I believe the system works on aggregate at the moment. Perhaps nothing in the particular game you were banned after was inherently ban-worthy, but what that means is likely that you were right on the edge of being banned, and effectively got pushed over by a report from someone with a solid track record in terms of reporting. Now, I can't speak for Riot or exactly how their system works, but I believe it does weight reports by the past accuracy of the player in identifying toxic players.

In short, you've acknowledged that you probably deserved the ban, which means that it was almost assured to happen eventually. In this one case, the straw that broke the camel's back may have seemed small, but the system isn't designed to have a hard line that you have to cross, so it's still working as intended (I imagine).

As for the system helping people? It's hard to build an effective rehabilitation system, frankly. Riot has stated a few times that bans are not a rehabilitation system, and more of a "we don't want you playing this game" system, because prior attempts at rehabilitation systems for toxic players proved ineffective at reducing toxicity -- most players who went through them ended up still being toxic in future games.

As such, the system is now designed to help non-toxic players by simply culling toxic players accounts over and over. If you're not the sort of person to take this into consideration and look into ways to help prevent or reduce your toxicity and seek out rehabilitation yourself, you may not be the sort who would change with Riot-system-based rehabilitation either. A certain willingness to seek positive change is important for rehabilitation to work in the first place.

That said, what sort of system do you think would have helped you more? I'm interested in hearing your perspective, and if you have an idea of what sort of improvements you'd be interested in seeing to the system.
