No Riot, I don't understand your backwards logic

Acting like the world's largest baby sitter in a video game whose demographics are well above the age of 16 is a mistake. No other platform out there is as much of a frustrating experience to deal with behavioral issues as League of Legends. Harsh example: should someone go on a racist tirade on Xbox Live, he'll eventually get warned and suspended pretty quickly, but not those surrounding him. Why? Because those affected by this moron's ranting already had their game disrupted, and you can Expect people to lash back, thankfully only verbally. And those people whose experience got ruined will not get touched, because they are victims, and not the perpetrator. That is where you, at Riot Games, go wrong. You are willing to punish ANYONE who types anything other than "gg <3" or some fruity shit like that. And knowing people will get punished themselves for reporting another player since they said something back, all you end up with are fewer reports.

Chat restrictions. Because limiting someone to like 5 messages in a span of 10-15 minutes is totally going to reform players. Hell, I can't even fathom why you make it your business to try converting people's toxic personalities. You're not therapists or counselors; stop trying to act like such. Anyway, what makes you think this is a fair punishment? If anything, the restricted player will only feel more frustrated because 1) not everything can be communicated with pings: ultimates being down. low hp players, calling for someone to initiate, these are all things you need to thoroughly reach out to your team for. Ffs at least lift the cap a bit higher and allow "thanks" and similar keywords to pass by filter. I don't know, I'm trying to see your side of this as much as possible but it just doesn't make any sense. You constantly reiterate this being a team game yet this punishment hurts everyone else on the team as well; thanks!

Muting. First off, why even have an /allchat? Other than occasionally seeing a "glhf" or other small talk I could care less about, it's just an avenue for someone to bitch and whine about their teammates to the enemy team or call for a report. Second, once someone starts being toxic, the damage is already done. And the answer is never to mute the entire team because they may be typing out useful suggestions that can't be communicated via pings alone and you didn't hear shit.

Change in policy would be great:

  • punish only the player who clearly initiated a toxic environment
  • quickly move from warning to suspension to ban

I'll vent my frustrations out loud, but not into the chat, unless someone becomes aggressive with me first. But hey, I guess I'm the bad guy for defending my actions so I don't look like an idiot who doesn't know how to play the game in front of everyone else. That's like penalizing you after being assaulted for standing up for yourself. At the end of the day you only empower bullies and assholes who can confidently talk shit on a frequent basis and get away with it, while someone like myself, who only deals with this kind of shit like once every couple of months at best, gets slapped with a 20-something chat restriction, for what, my second offense in a year? Meanwhile the one who started this mess likely only got hit with a chat restriction himself, but apparently initiating toxic behavior and responding to it have equal weight. What a fucking joke. I may as well start some shit myself, since my punishment wouldn't be any worse than those who reply back :) Great learning experience, rito.

Just like in league! As long as you don't stoop to his level, you are fine.

You are willing to punish ANYONE who types anything other than "gg <3" or some fruity shit like that.

If I could pull my chat logs (or if Rito wants to) you'll see you can actually say lots of stuff without getting banned.

And knowing people will get punished themselves for reporting another player

Reporting someone doesn't start a review of your own behavior. If you flame the guy flaming you and he reports you, that will start the review.

Because limiting someone to like 5 messages in a span of 10-15 minutes is totally going to reform players.

Reducing the amount of messages isn't supposed to be what reforms you. The warning that you are on track to more severe punishment is what is supposed to motivate the reform while the chat ban helps limit the damage you can do while trying to reform.

Hell, I can't even fathom why you make it your business to try converting people's toxic personalities.

Because instabans is not a good way to deal with toxicity.

  • punish only the player who clearly initiated a toxic environment

If someone says mean words to you and you can't control yourself to not also become toxic af then odds are, you are generally toxic

  • quickly move from warning to suspension to ban

You mean faster than 3 strikes? Chat bans are warnings, 14-day ban is a final warning and a perma is (obviously) you're done. Going beyond that would provide people with very little time to reform. Reformation doesn't happen after one game, you have to unlearn the toxic tenancies you have picked up that led to your restriction/ban.

I don't look like an idiot who doesn't know how to play the game in front of everyone else.

If someone is flaming you I can guarantee that your teammates aren't sitting there thinking "man this dude calling our top laner a f***** for missing a skill shot makes some good points". They have probably muted them or are just ignoring them, by arguing you are making the situation much much worse and only helping the other team and giving the trolls what they want.

I may as well start some shit myself, since my punishment wouldn't be any worse than those who reply back

Hey, there is my point from above. If you are willing to react with toxicity then you are probably a toxic player and the ban is warranted.

sounds like someone can't control their anger and is salty for the system punishing them.

The league of Kindergarten, where "he started it" originally started.

  1. Players report other players. It starts with players, and Riot enforces the valid reports. Riot's acting like a babysitter? I'd say at least, that it's half them and half the players, but Riot originally got the IFS from Tribunal and conversations from the Boards, so it's really more players than it is Riot.

  2. With a chat restriction, players don't/can't focus on their chat. At the least, this removes toxic chat from a game. At best, this allows a player to see others whose chat isn't being restricted, and players can learn what is or isn't acceptable in chat.

  3. /all chat is a tool, and like every other form of communication, it can be used for good and bad. Likewise, you can disable it.

  4. What fight has an immediate escape tool? That's where I disagree with your "I was defending myself" in a fight metaphor. I've played with many toxic players, and rarely has a toxic player changed their mind from arguing or even trying to reason with them. The mute button is the best way to deal with a toxic player. You're not dealing with their chat, you're focusing on your game, and maybe they'll realize they're muted and focus on theirs.

Hope this helps..... glhf.

Jesus, people. Chat restrictions =/= behavior reform. Riot Games wouldn't know the first thing about counseling if it hit them on the back of the head. If chat restrictions are in place to reduce damage, then by default they're admitting they don't know how to actually control anyone's emotions, so yes, if someone starts a toxic environment, and an instant ban was actually a threat rather than a stupid chat restriction, I'd never type a word, mute them, and report them at the end of the game and be content! I wouldn't be typing this up in the first place if their system was the least bit effective. I don't doubt for a moment the overwhelming majority of players are dissatisfied at how easily toxic players get away with their shit for numerous games before getting hit for like a 5-game chat restriction for first offense, which is peanuts; they'll spam some 15-minute bot games.

I don't think you realize how suave adults are. They have to deal with this all the time, but they have to respond in a way that gives them the political upper hand and control over the conversation. It's a game of the mind and emotion.
