Just So I'm Clear About Chat Bans

Just so I'm clear:

I can have 2 AFKers, 1 feeder and one bot on my team (Four games in a row, but let's focus on the one that I got a 5 game ban for) and in addition, have the entire other team rip on me/my "team" as we get steam rolled into a 22 minute loss. That's cool.

But me explaining what was going on with my team, without cursing, nets me a chat ban? Again, keep in mind the other team was ripping on my the whole time.

Who judges these chat bans, and are the circumstances considered in totality? What qualifies the reviewers to pass judgement?

This seems like a very arbitrary process (not to be confused with arbitration, in which a person listens to both sides and then makes a bind decision) and I suspect the whole thing is automated. What protection is there from someone just being a sore loser and then reporting the entire team that beat him?

Are the standards of what are considered "appropriate" totally G-Rated? That's an honest question because going back through my cited chat ban, the worst I can find is a few references I made to "my retarded team" (trust me, they were) as well as a few WTF abbreviations thrown in.

Please. Enlighten me, so that I know whether or not I just should play an inherently-social game with absolutely zero social interaction (to avoid another dreaded chat ban) outside of dialog seen in the movie Bambi, or if there can be expected to be a bit of "real talk." I mean c'mon, the game is about killing other players as energetically as possible. How can that concept be so juxtaposed with such quick hammer-felling when chat crests into the PG-13 zone?

in b4 salty comments - I'm honestly curious how these decisions are made.

Only your own actions are taken into account for punishments. What anyone else did or how they may be dealt with is irrelevant to the matter, because you alone are responsible for your actions.

You're right that the process is (mostly) automated. When people report you for verbal abuse, you'll have that match added to a case against you. When the case gets big enough the system will review all the reports and check for behavior that is unacceptable according to the community and the behavioral guidelines. If you have enough matches in which punishable behavior was found then you will receive punishment. In severe cases it may be manually audited by Riot and the punishment escalated multiple tiers.

If you're confused as to what you might be doing wrong, post the reform card. I can tell you already that calling your team retarded is one of those things that is not ok and is a reportable offense. Insulting someone never made them play any better, rather, it usually makes them play worse. No matter what issue you think you're addressing with this behavior you are now becoming a new problem to the team.

THE OTHER PLAYER IN THE GAME I WAS REPORTED FOR WAS WAY MORE TOXIC THAN ME. HOW COME I WAS PUNISHED?

Simply speaking, retaliation is not an acceptable or justifiable behavior. An argument between two players can easily create a negative experience for the rest players in the game with you. Regardless of the other player’s actions, this does not justify your own behavior. You alone are responsible for your actions within the game. If you encounter a toxic player like this, the best option is to simply report their behavior and move on.

Very important to note is how punishments are decided now. They are done in 4 steps in order;

  • 10 game chat restriction
  • 25 game chat restriction
  • 14 day account ban
  • Permanent account ban

It takes 3 months for your next punishment to drop down one step. If you get punished before then, it doesn't matter how mild the offenses that triggered it, you will move to the next. Most punishments aren't because of the hate speech and death threats that can result in immediate account bans, but are the result of consistent negativity.

Caveat - I really am a retired Marine - so if anything, I would argue that I use more language restraint than the average bear....
