Riot, please bring back the "Unskilled Player" report category. Here's why:

Here's a quote from @RiotLyte, the guy who is in charge of all this:

"There's an interesting tidbit here. We ran a language processing analysis once on 'good' players and 'toxic' players and tried to determine the most common words used by these populations. It turns out that for the most toxic players in the world, the most common word they use is 'report.'"

Interesting.

The point of the report system is to make the game a pleasurable, fun, pleasant experience right? To reduce the amount of nasty words people say to you, right?

How fun and pleasant is it to see "you have been reported for Offensive Language" after every single Solo Q defeat? Especially considering that for the last few months you begin every Solo Q game typing "/mute all" and spending every game in complete silence, focused on nothing but playing the game the best you can.

Oh, people say false reports don't "do anything" to hurt you, but if that's true, then having a player say "u suk %%%got uninstall plz report this noob btw i hate all jews %%%gets and N'wurds too!" is ALSO NOT HARMFUL because it doesn't do anything to you.

Seeing "You have been reported for false reasons because this community is full of jerks" after every Solo Q defeat is EVERY BIT AS HARMFUL as any sort of negative hatespeech that happens in the chatroom.

By giving toxic players the ability to "revenge report", they are giving them a way to verbally harass you that is NOT cancelled by the mute button. If negative words hurt the game (remember, this is the ENTIRE POINT of fighting toxicity) then why has Riot created an automatic "tell person they are a bad player regardless of their actions" button?

I get the notices exist as a "hmm, I should consider my words more carefully" check, but if there are NO WORDS TO CONSIDER, then it's just as hurtful to be Verbally Harassed by Riot Games as it is by another player.

Faker sees this post, and responds "just win every game then and you'll have nothing to worry about"

Sorry Faker, but a) even YOU lost a game during worlds and b) i've been reported for Offensive Language during games where my team won, and I personally did very well AND i said NOTHING IN CHAT THE ENTIRE GAME INCLUDING THE PRE AND POST GAME LOBBIES.

So, I hope you are all on board with the logic: IF false report notices "do nothing" because they don't hurt your account or ability to play and enjoy the game, THEN getting called a "Nword Jew F*ggt u suck, etc. etc." ALSO "does nothing" because it doesn't hurt your account or ability to play and enjoy the game. THEREFORE the entire point of fighting toxicity is pointless.

(*excepting the truly INTENTIONAL feeder and scripted robot players, which are actually a semi-rare occurrence, but are the only two forms of reportable behavior that don't involve the chatroom).

Basically...

We need to bring back the "Unskilled Player" report category. Of course, it won't mean anything. 99% of the community is unfit to accurately judge another player's skill, especially after a single game. (Again, my old favorite "Report Nasus for split-pushing") Make sure the automated system doesn't send a message of course, unless it's a funny one, like:

"You have been reported for Unskilled because your team's Yasuo had 20 kills while you were 0/5, but don't worry. Unlike that Yasuo, we look at assists and turret kills, and we noticed you helped take down a ton of turrets, while that Yasuo spent most of the game chasing the enemy Shaco around an unwarded jungle. If Yasuo was a skilled player, he would have used teamwork and/or focused some objectives, but he didn't. You did though. Isn't it funny how assassin mains think that their kill count is related to skill? I mean, Zed and Katrina are DESIGNED to kill champions. Janna is not. Yasuo doesn't get that, so really, he's the unskilled one. You are pretty good at Janna though. Those were some clutch shields there. You guys would have won if Yasuo hadn't tilted and thrown. Good luck in your next game!"

Having the "Unskilled Player" option will satisfy the "report spammers" sense of revenge. And let's be honest. 99.999999% of reports are about revenge and being a sore loser anyway. As Lyte's above quote suggests (and many other statements he has made which you should google yourself), toxic players are most likely to use the report system. Let's keep toxic players from harassing us by distracting them with a shiny button button so they can pretend they're hurting other people.

Heck, maybe add a secret to flag a person's account for review after they've pressed the "Unskilled Player Report" button a certain number of times. I'm pretty sure that the type of player who likes to report someone after every defeat is going to have used the chatroom to abuse and insult his team in the majority of his defeats.

Maybe we can even tell them that if they press the button five-hundred times, the reported player will be banned. That won't be true, but hey, you won't risk having that jerk show up on your team in the next game because they will be too busy pressing the button five-hundred times to play the game.

Isn't that what we want? To not have to play a game with jerks?

TL;DR - Behavioral Scientists (which Lyte is, by the way) have discovered that video games reduce real life violence because they give people with violent tendencies a way to indulge their harmful urges without actually hurting anyone for real. Let's follow that model here, and give the toxic players a phony button to press so they can believe they are griefing/blaming/getting revenge on someone without any real harm being caused.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play Nasus , become an unstoppable force, smash every single enemy turret, inhibitor and nexus I come across, help my team by forcing the enemy to focus me instead of my teammates, thus helping my team win the game. Of course, I'll probably end up getting reported four times because I got killed a few times during the laning phase, spent most of the game split pushing, and ended the game with a negative kill-death ratio.

I too never speak in games anymore for the reasons you have listed above. However, due to extreme will power, I am able to do this without using /muteall at the beginning of each game, which gives me the added bonus of reporting people who flame me/the team during our games.

For example, in my most recent game I played, I was flamed for most of the game by two team members because I chose not to roam from my lane to help them in a stupid fight. They even argued with the entire enemy team in the end game lobby about how I must have been a bot because I never spoke. Had I muted them, I would have missed out on all their delicious tears and the opportunity to report them.

I do have all chat turned off though.. That shit is cancer.

For the record, issuing false reports is a punishable action. Not only does it decrease the value of their future reports, it can also result in bans - just like the type of language you compare it to.

The real problem is people overusing the word toxic. Someone who hurts your feelings isn't toxic. Someone who calls you out for mistakes isn't toxic. A toxic person is someone who continuously drags others down to their level of filth and nastiness. I've played this game for four years now and only seen one player who was aver actally toxic. The others who everyone else labels as toxic aren't even close to the actual definition of the word.

You get called bronzie, you're considered toxic to this community. But that isn't toxic at all, just a guy being an @$$.

So realistically they should put into the algorithm to detect speech that when a player reports somene for Verbal Abuse a log is reviewed to see if the player spoke. One thing people don't realize from my experience is that pre and post game chat is in the reviews now (citation needed), so people saying "I didn't say anything" isn't actually true.

While I agree with you on most of this, I don't know if the unskilled player is what the problem is here. The problem being is how do you tell if this person is "unskilled" or just having a bad game? For me at least, I only used the unskilled player report when it seemed like someone was boosted. For example I once played a game where this guy had a Plat border in normals. I was bronze at the time, but this guy did not know how to farm (something like 20 cs by 35 min) on zed against an AP Sona. I have about 3 games of zed on my account, but I can still farm better than that guy. To me it seems pretty obvious that he was boosted. Long story short it's hard to tell "unskilled" from "having a bad game", at least for me it is.

The only part that I really disagree with you on is this part right here

So, I hope you are all on board with the logic: IF false report notices "do nothing" because they don't hurt your account or ability to play and enjoy the game, THEN getting called a "Nword Jew F*ggt u suck, etc. etc." ALSO "does nothing" because it doesn't hurt your account or ability to play and enjoy the game. THEREFORE the entire point of fighting toxicity is pointless.

I have a hard time accepting this. I generally play with chat on because I like to call out flash timers, drag almost up etc. And yeah I'll get flamed at on every once in a while, but I mute that one person. If someone started yelling at me using derogatory terms, yeah it's gonna make me upset and I'm probably not going to play as well for that one person. False reports I can shrug off as them being upset (I have yet to get one so maybe I'm not the best person to ask), but it's harder for me to accept being insulted by using derogatory terms. For the most part I can shake those off, but every once in a while they get to me.

The last problem I have is that we (the LOL community) should not punish people for being bad at a game. League is the first MOBA I've ever played and I'm still not good at it. Does that mean I should be punished for being bad at a game? My (then) girlfriend started to play League and it was her first MOBA and she was constantly flamed for "not being good". Considering she was a lvl 1 sum, she ended up quitting because she was "unskilled".
