PSA: Context does not matter.

I've seen some threads over the past few weeks with lines to the effect of "But you only heard what I said, the other guy was much worse."

News flash: If your neighbor takes out a bat and starts smashing your windows (flaming), it does not entitle you to a complimentary glass shattering spree (retaliating). Stay indoors (mute), call the cops (report), and let the police arrest him (ban).

These systems exist for a reason, use them instead of putting yourself in the spotlight too.

Erm.. Self defense? I understand what you are trying to say.. But if someone comes and smashes my windows I have every right to all but murder this fucker.

You are a an idiot. Talking is not a crime. Bad language is not a crime, standing up for yourself when insulted or talked down to is not a crime. Breaking your neighbors windows is.

Your analogy retarded. Context definitely matters, and stamping out the ROOT cause of the toxicity would be much better than punishing peoples reactions to it.

*situation does not matter. context does matter. you are confusing the two words. Without understanding something's context you can't usually understand what it means or why it was said. one example of context: "gg ez" if you don't have the context you won't know if they are saying it as an insult joke or compliment. If your team or enemy team has an ezreal and they do a great play "gg ez" is a compliment towards ez. If you roflstomp the enemy team and say "gg ez" it would be a rude statement. If you get roflstomped or the you win and it was very close and everyone knows it was a close game "gg ez" would be said in a joking manner (although it could also be said rudely as well depending on the attitude you have had over the game)

Here's the issue with your Analogy.

With the current system implemented, you have someone coming over to your house smashing windows. You stay indoors(mute), lose your property (lose the game), call the cops(report), and the police comes over and gives him a warning(result). The same person somehow comes over the next day, and smashes your garage door and ruins your driveway, the police come over and give him another warning (result)

No, no, if your system is so garbage that someone smashing my windows only merits a warning and you let him continue doing what he's doing. I'll glady take the warning and go smash the fuck out of his windows.

I would agree with you if context didn't mean everything.

Context clues determine if a statement is a joke or harassment. "/all GG report this trash jungle for feeding" sounds punishable by Riot's system until you look at the context. Was he intentionally feeding all game prior to the statement or was he 20-0 and his team clearly joking. A player tells his team he is going afk. Punishable unless he accidentally stole a pentakill and says it as a joke to show he is sorry.

Context means EVERYTHING. If Riot ignored context and looked only at each individual line of text in this game then damnnear everyone would be banned or chat would be disabled for everyone. Granted, your point of 'being flamed does not justify flamming back' is valid but everything else you said is wrong.

Also, please edit and delete your analogy. It is completely wrong and distracting everyone from the point of your thread.

But in real life, if the criminal gets arrested, we know of it. On League, I have never heard from the people I reported.

The intent was good but the analogy is not the greatest...

Inb4 the neighbour takes out a gun (threats to Afk/troll) and starts shooting at your family (actually does it).

If someone walks up to my window and starts beating it in with a bat, I'm not going to sit and wait for the police, the police aren't going to fix the damage. I"m going to take out a pistol and start firing warning shots. Just sitting back and taking it isn't going to dissuade people from taking advantage of you.

If you really want an accurate analogy of this report system in terms of baseball bats and police, the flamer is the asshole with the baseball bat, you with the tazer keeping the guy from smashing your windows is you defending yourself, and Riot is the police who arrest you because you shocked the asshole to keep him from destroying your house.

You know, it reminds me of that episode of Drake and Josh where Josh dressed up as the Theater Thug for a TV show. It was funny up until everyone started ganging up on him, Josh got beaten by bystander 3 times, but HE was the one who was arrested each time, and then the cherry on the abortion cake that was that episode was when he got assaulted by the Theater Thug himself, the police show up, JOSH gets arrested, and the Theater Thug walks free. If that isn't an accurate analogy to Riot's report system, I don't know what is.
