Permabans are Stupid. Simpler Solution

Permabans are just plain dumb. I get the reasoning behind it, but that also doesn't make it right. The only time anyone should ever be permabanned is if they are cheating. You literally already have a system in place to deal with these people. Chat restrictions are effective and I could even support permanent chat restriction or revocation, only allowing pings to communicate with the team. I truly believe you have gone to far and let your power get to your head and have become the bully you seek to repress.

This method (permanent chat bans / chat restrictions) were tested several years ago. They opted not to, as it actually ended up just leading to an increase in harder to detect forms of toxicity.

From Riot Tantram:

It really breaks down into two categories.

1.) Helping players reform 2.) Shielding others from the behavior, at a cost.

We used to issue chat restrictions that essentially scaled indefinitely.

We were able to determine that after a certain point the penalty no longer helped with reform. The 10-game and 25-game counts for chat restrictions are based on data that they were both light enough, and felt strict enough to encourage people to understand their behavior is unacceptable in game and change it.

We also saw that the players in this 'large restriction' category defaulted to gameplay altering means of harassing their team. It caused an increase in feeding and trolling.

The sample size of this population and time frame is huge. Essentially the time spanning from the introduction of chat restrictions to the introduction of IFS.

So my question for you is, would you rather have more feeders and less negative chat?

If someone isn't gonna behave properly despite being given multiple chances to do so then why shouldn't they be removed from the game?

Permanent mutes aren't an answer. Players that want to lash out and cannot due it via chat, will do it through other methods. We have a lot of data backing this up.

We don't want money from toxic players. We want them to stop playing.

Riot isn't a bully because they permaban people. If you are stupid enough to continue being a colossal jerk to people, while KNOWING what the repercussions are of continuing that behavior, you have absolutely no right to be upset when Riot bans you from their game. Just like you KNOW you will get put in jail if you steal a car - this causes you to not steal a car. So if you don't like being permanently banned and losing everything on your account be a decent human being. It's not that hard. Stop trying to give people a way out of a punishment because they got caught being dicks to people.

Explains my feelings exactly on the comment just below the one you linked.

For clarification, I have never been banned. I just think their system is stupid.

Then permaban after. Permanent chat restriction is the logical next step of the punishment process. If problems continue, then perma ban. And ping spam, realllllllyyyyyy? Cant that be solved by muting the player?

without reading the post: if this is about perma-chat bans. no! its a stupid idea. ppl will just start to troll

While i also think permabans arent the best solution, your suggestion doesnt work. Riot already tried it, the players with perma chat restrictions just moved to other methods of trolling until they were removed.

Any type of ban is immoral. People spend money on their accounts. Taking it away is stealing, regardless of their behavior.

First of all, they are punishing the wrong people. The retaliators are getting severely over punished, while the instigators are actually getting protected.

Second, the types of punishments are all wrong. If someone feeds, they should be forced to play coop vs ai for a while. If someone is verbally abusive then disable their chat. There is no reason to ban people for verbal offensives while there is a MUTE button. Taking away accounts is stealing and it's wrong. You don't correct a wrong by committing another wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I do think they should have an option to just outright disable chat. At the very least they could implement that. Keep the chat box for pings and such, but chat should have a toggle.

Permabans should stay though. No reason to remove them. There are some who just deserve it.

From a business perspective. Permabanned accounts mean the player will probably start a new account. Buy skins, and get that account banned and keep repeating, so it's good money.

From a morale perspective. Permabanned accounts should not be unbanned because toxic people need to stay out of the game.
