Riot made this really interesting article on trashtalk, but it is only from player perspective.
Nowhere anyone talks about Riot Games' stance on the matter. With an article like this, I would have appreciated some kind of "official" statement.
Meanwhile in sports like boxing or hockey you can go a lot further without crossing into unsportsmanlike territory. Muhammad Ali was revered – not punished – for his trash talk, and when players fistfight on the hockey rink, the referee pretty much just lets it happen.
It’s worth bringing up such comparisons in the context of League of Legends not because fencing is too uptight or boxing is too brash, but to demonstrate that sportsmanship is a relative concept. What one sport might consider tacky or offensive might be considered healthy or constructive in another. Yes, there are certain unwritten rules that govern etiquette uniformly across all competitive scenes, but for the most part, trash talk lands in a sort of moral grey area.
So in what category does Riot think League falls?
I made this topic a while ago, highlighting my stance on the matter, and it got downvoted to ovlivion, yet my views and arguments allign a lot with this article. I would like some definite statement from Riot themselves, at least pointing out what place they think trash talk has in league.
Before Doublelift and I wrap up our interview, he makes sure to re-emphasise that he doesn’t see trash talk as universally toxic, and that he appreciates it as part of the game’s competitive spirit.
