Do people actually ENJOY pvp?

I am honestly curious about this. This isn't about me. Personally, I HATE pvp. I do it for one reason and one reason only: Free stuff from hextech chests. If riot unlocked all current and future content on my account today and restricted me from ever playing any game format other than custom games with me +9 bots, I'd be delighted with that arrangement. Heck, they wouldn't have to restrict me. If the completionist in me could have all the champs and 1 skin for each, I'd go back to customs without any encouragement whatsoever.

But the real reason I wonder about it is this: I've NEVER seen anyone who is positive to both teammates and opposing players in chat, who seems to be relaxed and chill about their pvp games, and so forth. EVERYONE seems to flame teammates, spam ping question marks over a player that makes a mistake and dies, afk's when the game goes bad or intentionally feeds, talks trash in the post game, and most of them can't even be bothered to honor someone at the end of the game. I have seen the message about everyone on my team honoring a player exactly three times. Three times all month. At BEST, people are like me. They mute everyone, say nothing, click honor at the end and move on to the next game without a word. Seems to me that people don't play pvp because it's fun. Or at least I've never seen anyone who gives any indication that it's fun (except maybe trolls who just have fun being trolls) I honestly have no idea why they play with how angry most people seem. The hope that they can get to challenger and then lord it over other people like anyone actually cares?

I personally have mostly great interactions with my team, maybe because I create a good atmosphere in the game. If you're positive and nice, other people will also be more positive and nicer.

not all of us have thin skin

I wouldn't change a thing about this community, eternal salt makes it better

I play PvP for the interaction with other players and to sate my competitiveness. As a perfectionist and someone who is highly competitive, I can't stand to not play my absolute best. Whether that means climbing to Platinum or climbing to Challenger, I won't be satisfied until I know that I've put in my absolute best. The climbing is a form of instant gratification that keeps me striving, and the comparison to other players, rather than bots, is the only thing I care about in LoL.

That said, I play the game to have fun, first and foremost. If I stop having fun, I stop playing when that game's finished. I never play when I'm tilted or feeling angry. If I'm disappointed in my own performance to the point that it takes a toll on my future performance, I'll take a break and play a less stressful game, read a book, listen to music, or watch TV. If people being toxic is getting to me, I do the same. I'll never play if I don't have fun.

But for me, most of the fun comes from the climb and from the competition. Making cool outplays, or seeing them happen, is always a good way to pick up my mood. Watching LCS or LCK is always a nice experience, because you always see the players doing their absolute best and making stuff happen. They don't tilt and they don't get salty for the world to see—sure, they could be irritated, or tilted, or even raging, but they keep it inside until the camera's not on them, at least. It motivates me to keep calm even when things aren't going well.

The thing about toxicity is, if you don't let it get to you right off the bat, you can /fullmute someone as soon as they say anything negative. There goes that negativity, and from then on it doesn't matter what they say. It's not your problem at that point. You shouldn't try to calm someone who is raging down, and you can't reason with trolls. The best option is just muting.

I will say this: in Gold, I've actually only seen 2 people in my 300+ games intentionally feed. The community in Gold is very humble, very calm, very relaxed. I don't know entirely why, but I guess there's just a good sense of accomplishment in reaching the top 25% or whatever, "escaping" Silver. I've heard it gets bad in Platinum again, but if/when I get there, if I can't handle it, I'll just play the occasional game to prevent rank decay, and leave it at that. I can always climb on a smurf as well.

To conclude: the competition, comparing myself to other players, is what I find fun. Doing my absolute best and seeing that I can outperform other people, rather than bots, is my source of enjoyment. I don't play if I don't have fun. That's why I play the game, and I can see it's different for you—that's perfectly fine. Don't try to change yourself just because the game or other people want you to. It's never worth it.
