Serious question: Does Riot actually punish feeders?

Just had a support lock in Garen and sit in the mid lane the whole match. We all reported him, but I've only ever seen punishments go through for harrassing language.

I can deal with verbal harrassment, since I just mute people. I find it much more offensive when someone wastes 25 minutes of 9 people's time.

Yes, but very rarely.

Un-intentional feeding is not a crime.

Intentional feeding is a crime.

The truth is, it's a delicate issue. The Tribunal, when confronted with this, is likely to examine the NORMS of the situation.

Did this player try to win the game? How much did they die? How often? What items were they building?

Let's have a story. Once upon a time, I was permanently banned for unintentionally feeding.

I admit freely, I was a very toxic player building up to that point. I had anger issues due to other stresses in my life, and I had several punishments up to the final incident.

But in my final game, I had been playing to win.

Now bear with me... this is like, 3 - 4 years ago. Old story. I was trying to learn ADC at the time. I had always been, and continue to be, a Support Main, but decided it might be nice to try and learn ADC. I had a Sivir skin, and it was fun to try and play as her (These were in the good old days of 1st-version ricochet)

I ended up paired with a 4-man group. We got to bickering before the match even began. I don't remember some of the exact details, but they were very set in what they wanted to do, and expected me to play along. Well, I had a champ to practice and was having none of that.

So they commenced with their four-man nonsense and goofed around, while I set to lane and started farming. But it didn't go well at all. After dying several times on my lane, I started rotating to open lanes to push down turrets, trying to generate pressure, but of course this was way against the "Set Way To Do Things" and was terribly received.

I was caught several times while pushing and killed. I fell way behind. I decided the best thing to do was, since I was worth no gold, and this 4-man group was seriously getting on my nerves... I was going to split push.

I gave Sivir high tier boots and started stacking phantom dancers, building up move speed. My objective was to move as fast as possible, to split the enemy. They would chase me and lose teamfights, or they would lose turrets.

Things started to turn around. That four man gank pack won some fights. I continued kicking down turrets while they yelled and cursed at me in chat for "not grouping".

This is when I made my big mistake.

I told them flat out, that I didn't need to work with them to win. That they could go about their business, because someone had to come stop me, and as long as they had a presence on lane, we would emerge victorious. And it was coming true... the enemy couldn't hold objectives and deal with this 4-man group. I had taken some of their inhibitors down; we were just about to turn it all on its head.

...

At this time, they all recalled to the base and sat there. All four of them.

They jeered me as I continued to try and push.

I was caught and killed, of course. The game ended shortly after that, a loss.

All four of them reported me. I quit league, uninstalled the client and took a break. I did other things, played minecraft, etc.

... when I came back, a few months later, I discovered that my account had been permanently banned.

In that game, I had a terribly acidic chat log with a 4 man team, a build of Tier 2 boots and all Phantom Dancers, and a monstrously high death count (I had been throwing myself into the attack - with no gold to risk from no kills, why not?)

What actually happened was lost on the Tribunal, and the account was banned. Now, this was back in the "Old Days" of Tribunal where there were a lot of unfair punishments handed out... But I haven't really tried to get this ban reversed... because I really** wasn't a very nice player at that time.** Maybe that one game WASN'T my fault, but it was the tip of a very large iceberg.

I had been trying, desperately, to improve my behavior. I mostly would get angry because people would play poorly, and not listen to advice or pay attention. I was really bossy... I still am. I remember being terrified of punishment...The ban was mostly just. When I started a new account, I got into the habit of simply moving the chat window off the screen, so I could just focus on the game and have some control over my frustration. This was before the advent of chat limitation by Riot.

And from every angle, a 20+ death count, boots, and 3-4 phantom dancers Sivir looks like a troll. My determination to win, despite the sabotage of my own team, was completely irrelevant.

If you feed unintentionally, it needs to look like you tried.

If you do something weird, and die too much...** you'll be punished anyway.** Consider it a warning for the next time you think AD Leblanc is a good idea.

Intentional feed is reportable, and actually leads to punishment if it is done regularly, but it's harder to recognize than some other behaviors. And Riot is paranoid with giving wrong punishment, so feeders can avoid punishment longer than some other types of offenders.

Keep in mind that being noob is not reportable, though. This dude that is 0-15-0 and arguably wasted 9 other people time did nothing wrong if he didn't do it on purpose. Maybe he just tried a champ in ranked for the first time. That's stupid, but that is not against the rule, nothing you can do about it.
