The Community - An Assesment and Tips

I've played League now for eight years, and I have finally come to a few conclusions in reference to the Community in general. It is extremely easy to watch most any player that you ask claim that the community in League of Legends is the worst aspect of the game. For objective proof of this realize that most players have their chat completely turned off, in a multiplayer game, simply so they do not have to interact with even their own teammates. While fun banter and joking around does happen fairly often it is equally likely that both your team, and the enemy team, will simply begin to spam troll you for even typing anything other than 'gl hf.'

How can we help this situation? How can we bring back the fun that was the community in the early days of League? It's honestly very simple:

Act different.

See how hard that is? For all of those that fully understand that the community is about as friendly as a wombat who just received a BJ from a pit viper... they join in the garbage, instead of actually doing something about it. This, or they attempt to ignore it in the hopes that it will go away on it's own.

Below are a few tips on how you could easily improve the game play experience of both yourself, and the community at large:

  • Report People Whether They Are On Your Team Or Not It does no good to only report the trolls, feeders, and spammers that are on your team, and then laugh about it when they are on the other team. It amazes me to watch someone purposely feeding and spamming, someone asks the other team to report them, and the response is a unanimous "Nah, it's funny" sort of attitude from the enemy team. If you don't report them, you might have them on your team next, and suddenly you will want them reported too.

  • Act As If There Is An Age Requirement To Play When I was 12 Everquest came out. It was the first, true, MMORPG, and it had both an Age requirement, and Age verification. Those of us who managed to get our parents to let us play using their information... made an attempt to act like adults, lest we be banned. This meant that we did not run arund spamming a bunch of garbage, slamming other players, or trolling in general. We had to learn how to fit into a community that was almost entirely over the age of 18, and thus we learned how to banter, joke, and play around without acting like entitled little assholes.

  • Realize That Nobody Else Cares About Your Achievements In Game Made Challenger? Have a mastery level on a champion that's rather high? Main a Champion and managed to get it in ARAM? Nobody cares. You care, and it's honestly pretty cool that those things have gone well for you... but outside of that? Nobody cares. The quicker you realize that the only one that you are impressing is yourself, the quicker you stop tugging yourself and get back to having fun.

  • Impulse Control I've seen numerous players state that the reason they rage in game, is because in real life they have a tendency to break things, scream and yell, throw their keyboard, etc. Many also attempt to use these excuses as a reason that they should be given a chance to reform after a ban. If you are breaking things and screaming in real life - you do not need to reform. You need therapy and anger management classes. Most of these players are the same players who, upon things going wrong for them, their ability to play the game also drops into the nether pits of hell never to be seen again. Impulse Control is key, and not exactly difficult to learn.

  • Have Fun This is a game. Unless you are being paid to play - you're just playing a game. Remember that, and you might actually go from angrily going from match to match until you start trolling and melting down at people - to having fun once again. If you aren't having fun, you are in the wrong game. Go play WoW - those poor bastards haven't been having fun for years, and you will fit right in.

In conclusion:

It's a game people. Have fun, be kindish, and if you start to get angry go take a few breaths and realize that it won't matter tomorrow.
