Newflash: Serial killer on the loose!

afmghost·10/13/2018, 2:39:34 AM·2 votes·2,677 views

This is Donnie Vermilian. We have been informed that a serial killer is at large, armed, and dangerous. He...we just got an update.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have to protect the killer's privacy, so we cannot give you any names or describe the killer in any way. Good luck.

(Gee, doesn't that sound stupid?)

Assuming that you're referring to the no name-and-shame rule;

Except it's not a serial killer. It's a person who the OP claims to have behaved poorly in a video game.

To which I add;

"Hey everyone! I want you to be on the lookout for afmghost, he was being a complete asshole in one of my games on my alt."

Now regardless of my claim being true it would mean that you would need to defend against it. Imagine if you weren't on the boards to defend the claim?

You have no right to additionally try to get the community to harass out of vigilantism because there is already a system called reporting them that gets the situation through the proper channels.

Finally, any hope that I would randomly run into any player that you attempt to publicly shame is negligible. It would be like sending a message that there was a shoplifter at large to everyone in new york city.

Except here's the thing: You're comparing naming and shaming to a somewhat official source (a news agency) releasing info on a serial killer. Except that's not how it works.

Your analogy more fits Tantram coming to the boards and saying that someone is a troll and to watch out for him. Naming and shaming is only really done by random players, so in your analogy it wouldn't be a news agency saying it, but some random guy on the street. And that random guy could very well just be lying.

Ladies and gentlemen, the authorities have yet to confirm the identity or the existence of the serial killer, but the same random person on the internet who informed us of the killer's activities has also told us who he swears did it, so we figured we'd just release to you all the details and just hope this person is actually guilty. Good luck.

The thing you haven't taken into account is that any system that mitigates LP loss based on the behavior of others immediately incentivizes causing that behavior. If, for example, you get forgiveness when someone leaves, the "correct play" is to make someone so miserable they quit. That's a recipe for toxicity.

Of course it does. The dominion would get that killer quickly. We can always trust on emperor Mengsk to keep out streets safe from notorious outlaws like rebel and pirate James Raynor!

Riot doesn't let you run away. You have to be respectful if you encounter a serial killer. Your are responsible for your actions.
