Permanent chat ban vs. Perma-ban?

Would someone be able to explain why a permanent chat ban or a chat ban lasting a full season or longer isn't considered an option for when a player is perma-banned for excessive typing, verbal abuse, etc? For players who type too much but don't do much of anything else to negatively impact the game (Intentionally feed, throw games on purpose, win-trade, etc) it seems like this would be a better option. I believe that perma-bans are needed because sometimes it really is the only option, but I've always wondered why removing the ability to type wouldn't be a possible solution. You might not be able to time summoner spells or relay information as well, but with the ping system I feel like you don't lose too much by losing your ability to type if you aren't using it for anything but flame anyway.

Edit: To add, whats to stop these same players from just making/buying new accounts to continue the same behavior then? A permanent ban stops them from continuing to be toxic at that moment, but if they're not the type of person to conform or follow the rules that they previously broke, then wouldn't they just continue the same behavior on a new account? Just an unending cycle?

There was a period of time where Riot only issued stacking chat restrictions for poor chat behavior.

It was later scrapped.

Riot found many players that were running around with hundreds/thousands of games worth of chat restriction often misbehaved through gameplay related means when they couldn't do it through chat. And spotting poor gameplay behavior is a lot harder.

So the situation didn't really improve by handing out more restrictions to players that refused to behave themselves, they just found other ways to misbehave when one outlet was blocked.

For those that have the self-control to not grief in response to being unable to chat, they have the option to turn off teamchat themselves.

If they have self-control they should be able to resist the urge to turn it right back on when they want to flame. If they don't have the self-control to do that then I wouldn't be confident that they would have the self-control to behave themselves if chat was forcefully blocked.

Would someone be able to explain why a permanent chat ban or a chat ban lasting a full season or longer isn't considered an option for when a player is perma-banned for excessive typing, verbal abuse, etc?

Because of two major reasons;

  1. Permanent/Extensively long Chat Restrictions do not work. Riot tried using indefinitely-stacking Chat Restrictions a long while ago, and they didn't reap any good results.

Players under longer-scale restrictions either used their limited amount of chat for extreme vulgarity and harassment - which is exactly why they got the chat restriction in the first place - or worse, resorted to trolling and intentionally feeding to "prove a point" to their teammates. The uptick in gameplay toxicity is a wholly unwelcome consequence of applying a chat-related punishment, and simply permanently removing the player's ability to chat doesn't remove their ability to be toxic.

  1. There needs to be tangible consequences for continually breaking the rules. Whenever someone makes an account for League of Legends, they agree to abide by the Code of Conduct and the Summoner's Code. These are fair and simple behavioral guidelines and rules that are easy to follow - so much so that they can easily be summed up with "don't be a jerk".

Of course, some people will falter and break the rules by incident with the occasional instance of flame or one-off outbursts. These players usually rectify their behavior pretty quickly after the first punishment, and seldom need to be punished again. But some people will flout the rules, disrespect the game, and ignore warnings and punishments and continue to break the rules; these players need a punishment more severe than a simple chat restriction.

And, as I so often say; "If you can't be bothered to play by the rules, Riot can't be bothered to have you playing at all". Players are given ample warnings and opportunities to reform their behavior, so breaking the rules again and again has to merit some severe punishment. Which is why Riot employs permanent bans; if someone is so willing and eager to continue breaking the rules after being chat restricted twice, and being forced to leave the game for 14 days, with that punishment also coming with a warning that any further misbehavior will result in a permanent suspension, it's clear that the player does not care about the rules or the game, and does not deserve to play it further.

Those are the two biggest reasons that permanent account bans are used and permanent chat restrictions/bans aren't; perma-chat bans don't work (they simply result in an uptick of gameplay-related toxicity), and players who continuously ignore and disrespect the rules need to be given a harsh, final punishment that prevents them from breaking the rules again.

...but with the ping system I feel like you don't lose too much by losing your ability to type if you aren't using it for anything but flame anyway.

Frankly, someone who reaches the point of being permabanned for flame is just as likely to abuse the ping system as they do the chat system.

Imagine a geek store with a 'personal hygiene" policy. They created those policies because there were customers who were driving away other customers.

There is a 'community deodorant' bar that is used on people the first couple times they violate the policy. It helps. It really does.

But, what should the store do about habitual offenders? They kick them out.

Directly from the architect of IFS:

We used to issue chat restrictions that essentially scaled indefinitely.

We were able to determine that after a certain point the penalty no longer helped with reform. The 10-game and 25-game counts for chat restrictions are based on data that they were both light enough, and felt strict enough to encourage people to understand their behavior is unacceptable in game and change it.

IMO they should just do IP bans after a certain amount of chat restrictions/ 14 week suspensions. These toxic players just ruin the game for other players as well. On top of that there's the inters, the trolls, and the people who just don't care and insult people for 1 mistake they made. Hopefully Riot sees that all of this is 1 of the reasons why people have stepped away from League and make some sort of change to make the community for the better
