Banning System

Hello, My name is Luke, I have created this discussion to talk about League of Legends banning system. This is a long article on some research I have done into Behaviors in Videogames, It is a great read and I hope it opens everyone up to some new possible ideas to try! I have been playing League for about 4 years now as well as other popular multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike,Battlefield,and many more. In school I am studying Human Behavior and I recently did my project on the behaviors of video game players during competitive games. I set up the Project using Three games (League Of Legends, Counter Strike, and StarCraft) and I am hoping to add more games for even more evidence. I would play 50 games per game and record the amount or times I ran into a disgruntled player. To narrow the results I only used the games that my team lost. I also did an extra 10 games in each game where I would purposely do poorly in the game to try and get people to be more aggravated, I also would not say anything through the entire game. My findings surprised me massively and I'm hoping that they will influence Riot Games to try out some new things :).

For my first game I went with Starcraft because it was the game I had the least experience with and I was not really aware of how players are in the game. I played games of 3vs3, this ensured that the team aspect was used. Throughout all the games I played I ran into a mere two players who were unhappy with my performance and impute into the team. Although they were angry they didn't get super toxic, both players who were unhappy with my game-play did not use cuss words or caps to show their displeasure. But the most interesting thing was that in a mass amount of the other games I lost I was given tips on what to do and through the game my teammates and in isolated cases the enemy helped me. This made me wonder why this community was so willing to use their own play time to help someone else. Having played League of Legends for a massive amount of time I had very rarely seen something like this. Why didn't I see this in League of Legends? It made me even more intrigued into my study! I found it super interesting how communities differ in behavior. To recap I had a very pleasant time with the Starcraft players!

The second game I focused study on was CounterStrike, a very popular First person shooter that has had a massive competitive scene much like League and Starcraft. The great thing that sets Counterstrike apart from Starcraft and League Of Legends is that the game has both a chat box for typing users and also push to talk communication via microphone! I have played Counterstrike for about a year and have ranked up pretty high to DMG (Distinguished Master Guardian) Although I did not play competitive matchmaking for my study I am familiar with the community. In many of my games I was welcomed with a friendly and fun community full of different types of people. The thing I found most interesting is that in Non-ranked games the community changed dramatically, it went from a very serious ranked competitive scene to a laid back fun time with people. For the first 25 games I continued to not communicate with my team at all and saw no signs of aggression or bullying. This surprised me because In my experience with league of legends even in Normal games If I ever did poor I was met with quite a lot of toxicity. For my final 25 games of Counterstrike I changed things up and started to communicate with my teammates. I was thrown into a lot of fun and only ran into a few players who were partially aggressive to my bad performance. For the most part I had many laughs and met a few friends I have played with recently. I was curious why this differed from League of Legends chat which takes me to my next game.;)

In league I decided to do that same thing I had done with Counterstrike, I started with 25 Normal Blind pick games. In those games I did not communicate at all with any players enemy or ally. As soon as I started to do poor in the game I found that I was quickly met with players who started to blame me for everything that was going wrong. I can understand how a bad player can be frustrating but I found that It in the other games I had played I was not met with this amount of aggression. For more educated answers I went to my teacher who has a degree in Human Behavior. She used many interesting examples of how communities mold their members, one example she used was with music genres, for example if you go to an alternative rock concert like The popular band Sleeping With Sirens you may see that the majority of the fans and members are wearing clothing that is similar in style and their body movements and actions are similar to each other, this also works with country music. My teacher explained how communities became very close knit and tend to follow the actions and behavior of other community members. For example if one person starts the be aggressive toward a teammates other teammates are more influenced to do the same thing. This reminded me of a Domino Effect. This lead me to think about why its so bad in League of Legends. The answers I came to are that It was a very competitive game from the start of its creation and always has been. To test something I had noticed with Voice chat in Counterstrike I started to invite players into a Curse Voice chat group with microphones to play. I immediately noticed that people were very kind. In my first two games on Voice chat I noticed that people were helping me! This made me think that maybe when you put a voice to thought it influences people to be more kind. In the 25 games with voice chat I didn't run into a single person who was rude toward me! This was a great thing for me because it opened up my mind to how we can change the League of Legends community. After all my research I have come to a come to an idea that Riot could possibly introduce Voice Chat into the game. I absolutely believe that it will improve the community. If that isn't possible than maybe programs like Curse Voice can be installed and set up along with League. I am in no way saying it needs to happen but I believe it will allow all players to connect and form a beautiful community and makes some friends along the way. I put alot of work into my study and would love to share more of it with people who are interested! Please comment and let me know if you think that adding Voice Chat to League of Legends would help the community to lower players who are more intense when it comes to the game. I would love to give it a chance and make some friends! Add me on my new account under the name of this Discussion! Thank you all for reading! I hope it becomes a reality that we can have voice that. See you all on the Rift.
