Pride is what brings down Kings and Rulers.
Pride. As much as i would like to think positively of this word, it never happens. Pride is what brings out the worst of us. It is the corruption in English literature and the source of toxicity in a league of legends game. Every league player has their unique idiosyncrasies in game, but when somebody objects to another player's actions, or see them performing poorly, They take it onto themselves to verbally "motivate" the player into improving their game play by spitting out volatile and malignant words towards the individual. So how does pride play into this? When a player hears pessimistic comments about themselves, they are not able to 'ignore' the comments by using the muting feature that riot implemented for this sole purpose. Instead, they REPLY. Rarely do i see players who are able to mute negative comments AFTER they hear them. Why? Psychologically, No one wants to lose, just like how every player strives to win ranked games, they also seek to win rhetorical arguments that can only go one way. here are a few ways player can react when they hear a toxic comment
-
those that say 'lol' or 'xD' and then reply a with a ludicrous comment. This is the one i see most commonly, most players just can't put their pride behind themselves. and choose to engage in an inconsequential argument for at least 10 minutes of the game, where both players eventually tire each other out, but by that time it's most likely too late because they both focused on typing rather than play for a quarter of the match. Other players can't contribute to either side either, they just say "stop typing and just play" (which, in my opinion, not only does not help, but only causes the two players to type more intensively)
-
The 'All-Chatters' I don't even get why this makes any sense. I have seen too many players who type in all chat after their teammates start flaming them. It's like they're trying to justify their poor game play by informing the other team of their situation (Which have nothing to do with them). I have zero sympathy for those who do this.
-
The Afkers. Yep. It's actually quite common, maybe not as common as #1, but if you flame them enough, there are always those who just don't really care about the game anymore and just afk (Most of them come back after 3-10 minutes, but there are always exceptions)
-
Those who say "muted" (when they didn't) Then continue to listen to toxic chat and pings without replying Why are you even doing this to yourself? (They just don't want to give the other person the satisfaction of 'winning')
-
Those that muted all prior to the game Very rarely do people [mute all] before the game starts, but for those that do; I respect them. These are people who are aware of their vulnerability to toxicity and choose to not communicate so they can play better.
-
Those that report and move on Surprisingly I'd say there's actually a good number of people capable of doing this. While there are a great number of people incapable of moving on. There are always people who can say 'no' to the temptations of conflict and listen to the guidelines riot has given everyone. These are people who will eventually climb the ladder and prove to be respectable players in the future.
Pride causes all of the negative results. We can become better, more benevolent players if we all put our pride behind us. If you make a mistake, own up to it and learn from it. Then move forward as a better person. I hope i conveyed my point well.
