I really hope defending yourself/others from flame isn't harshly punishable.

Just had a game where I was helping a new friend get into League. We had a rough early game, and immediately our mid starts screaming about how we're feeding and trolling. I don't want my friend to be deterred from the game, so I speak up for her.

"We're trying new things in blinds. Stop being a %%%%."

Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have said %%%%, but immediately following that - and for the rest of the game - my midlaner starts screaming in all-chat to report us. Talking about how we're griefing, threatening her(?), etc. and eventually our top laner joins in on it for some reason? So it nets three extra reports from the enemy team. My friend and I walked away with, allegedly, five reports for verbal abuse, negative attitude, and intentionally feeding, because of this.

In a game where I was just trying to make sure my friend wasn't deterred from future games - not to mention I was the only decent performer on my team to begin with - I've been reported out the ass.

I've never been a victim of the punishment system before, but I've also never been spam reported like this. I don't personally mind too much, but my friend may not even want to come back to the game as a result of that level of toxicity.

Most of the time retaliation is mistaken with "defending yourself". In your example the first sentence was defending yourself "We're trying new things in blinds", you were explaining your actions.

But the second sentence, "Stop being a %%%%" was retaliation. You insulted them because they were insulting your friend.

In the future, just mute people who start flaming, insulting them is not going to deter them from insulting you further. More likely to cause the opposite. It's not worth your time or effort on someone that doesn't deserve either. Report them at the end of the game instead.

Defending yourself is not punished at all. Counter-attacking is. In this case, you defended yourself with the first part, and counter-attacked with the second.

"We're trying new things in blind" is 100% not punishable.

"Stop being a %%%%." is 100% punishable.

Riot doesn’t like homophobic or racial slurs of any kind, so you might be punished.

Defending yourself in theory can get you punished however because how the system works if you are truly ONLY defending yourself, you won’t rack up enough reports to be punished.

you used zero tolerance language, even one report for that can get you banned doesn't matter if more than one person reported you. You can defend yourself and your friends but you can't stoop to the jerk's level. if you had replaced the censored word with "Jerk", "butt", "douche", maybe even "ass" you'd have been fine.

you can try sending a ticket...

I'll tl;dr this for you (and you can trust my opinion, I'm one of those dumbasses who's been banned 4x and know how the system works).

  1. Multiple reports do not increase your chance of being punished.
  2. The player who was trying to get you reported needs professional help for their pride issues.
  3. There is no world where (unless you use several key words/heavily flame the enemy teammate in question) you'll be punished for defending your friend.

Long story short - You're fine, the only things I'd keep in check are to 1. Avoid using derogatory terms of any kind (never say kys even as a joke, you'll get 2 weeked out of context) and in the future just tell your friend to mute the player and have a good time. It's better to ignore than it is to fight back against people who clearly have self-esteem reliance.

You can defend yourself succinctly without getting punished. You can do it by not flaming, not insulting, not harassing, not spamming, not arguing, and muting them and moving on.

You can defend yourself politely with a sentence or two, mute them, and at the end of the game, report them and move on. There's no point in "winning" flame wars. Some immature person who can't act appropriately with other human beings and lacking proper coping mechanisms won't really learn anything from you flaming them back. All it does is teach them that they have to be more harsh and flame worse so that they feel like they've won.

If you decided to fight fire with fire, then you're going to get in some trouble. You should never fire back at someone because all it will do is escalate the situation and make things worse for everyone. It just keeps escalating the bad behavior in your game and in subsequent games for that person.

Since you used something that was %-ed out, I'm guessing you're going to get punished. You already know you shouldn't have used that word so there's no real point in addressing it any further than this.
