Why does Riot punish "toxic" behaviour?

Why does League do this? People use the mute button if they don't want to deal with someone's insults. So why does Riot promote censorship? Punishment in a video game? I am sure everyone gets heated in games and only some take to chat to vent, that still does not explain the sjw attitude Riot seems to promote. And it's not just Riot, so many game companies are doing this as if they either have too much money to spend where they spend it on unncessary "forced discipline" or are compelled by some sort of butthurt philosophy?

Secondly, how does the punishment system work? Do you first get chat restricted? Then a 7 day ban? Then 14 days, permanent? Do they punish you by analyzing one game?

To answer your first question shortly and sweetly; they maintain punishment systems because they know the playerbase doesn't log in just to get flamed. They log in to play the game and have a good time, and getting flamed is not conducive to a good time. It's not an SJW attitude or a waste of money - it's an effort to maintain the quality of their game for the playerbase.

The mute feature isn't an excuse to allow flaming, and vitriol is not an intrinsic part of competition, and since flaming serves no purpose but the short-lived satisfaction of the flamer, it's very easy to understand why it's not allowed.

As to your second series of questions;

Secondly, how does the punishment system work? Do you first get chat restricted? Then a 7 day ban? Then 14 days, permanent? Do they punish you by analyzing one game?

The IFS, when dealing with chat-related misbehavior, views the logs holistically using knowledge built up from what Riot fed its neural network. It reviews any game in which a player was reported, and decides, in a case-by-case basis, whether or not the reports filed against the player were valid or not.

It only requires at least one report to perform a review, and further reports do not increase the likelihood of a punishment. If the IFS decides to apply a punishment to a player, it will typically try to present up to three recent matches showing player misbehavior (in order of most egregious to least) as evidence supporting the punishment.

The basic escalation for the punishment system is as follows:

  • 10-game Chat Restriction
  • 25-game Chat Restriction
  • 14-day Account Suspension
  • Permanent Account Suspension

Assuming a player commits modest offenses with enough regularity, they will progress through those tiers from top to bottom. However, especially egregious offenses (hate speech, encouragements of self-harm, etc.) can warrant an escalation to a 14-day ban off the bat.

And, the IFS seldom punishes based off of one game alone. Generally speaking, it punishes based off of consistency and severity - multiple minor infractions will build up to a punishment, but infrequent, egregious infractions can lead to a faster punishment.

And, another worthwhile note; when the IFS reviews a player's behavior, that player's behavior is reviewed in isolation, as other people's behavior has no bearing on how the player decides to react.

If you've any further questions about the system, do feel free to ask.

Because people can't mute until you already start being toxic, at which point the damage has been done and the game experience has been ruined for the player.

Why do the police arrest people who shoot guns? If you don't want to get hurt, buy a bulletproof vest and a helmet. Then you can't get hurt, so why should the police arrest people?

If player A insults player B enough to tilt player B, and they’re both my teammates, I’m utterly fucked. Mute won’t help in that case, and it happens a lot. Fuck toxicity.

A League match is not a vacuum that contains "me" and "person pissing me off."

There are punishments because up to 8 other people in the game have to deal with two other people throwing feces at each other like children.

its simple i dont want to play with a flamer all they do is flame all game and most likely bait a flame war that i cant stop with a mute because both players are more focused on the flame then the game.

Why do people punish those who start fires? Fire extinguishers exist.

Why should bad behavior be allowed? And if you don't like Riots rules (which are good rules) you can go and play other games. Why is cyber bullying such a big problem if it's just words and insults?

I think the only good reason to have a punishment system in place is for minors.. adults who get offended by insults from anonymous people are not adults.

To quote Chermorg:

It being the internet doesn’t change the fact this is a game people play to enjoy, not to be flamed for every little tiny mistake.

Because people who refuse to use the mute button cry to Riot about getting their feelings hurt. That’s why the system gives out chat restrictions.

People mute AND report flamers because when someone flames "the damage is already done".

I'm curious to know what this "damage" is.

Meanwhile trolls go unpunished. I've seen over 60 trolls/griefers this season already. All of them still play the game.
