Actually I find the opposite weird. You would call someone by their name only if you know them edit: Not even pros use summ names, you will never hear them say on stage "Impact has no TP" but instead they'd say "Maokai no TP"

I assume calling folks by their champ name became convention simply because it's easier. Not only for the individual, but for the team.

I could take the time to figure your name out and say, in the middle of a game, "Hey Corrector1, build tanky please", but now three other teammates need to figure out who I'm talking about to understand what I said. If I call you by champ, everybody has an easier time processing the info.

Champions are a part of the game you have to learn, and when you hear their names you end up thinking of what they can do. Reading usernames isn't necessarily an easy thing, and doesn't instantly bring the kit of their champion to mind.

I actually kind of like how this works. Using the names and pronouns for the champion rather than the player is an interesting little thing that developed, since I've seen this happen since season 1 I'm sure it didn't originate with League.

When you look at your game screen you don't see other players names normally, unless they are currently on your screen. In some cases you would have to open the scoreboard and then hover your mouse over them or scroll your view over to their character to get their actual username.

For the champion name though you just have to glance at the right side of the screen or your minimap to see a picture of them, and most players know all of the champions names.

Because a lot of ign names isn't always the easiest to follow let alone remember when you got names like fucking "xXz92masterXz" (fictitious), or worse you have names like "BIG DICK JUNGLER" which is an actual name of one of the opponents I'd faced which is VERY memorable indeed but I'd rather die than actually referring to them using this name.

Of course people use champ names to refer to someone, it's easier.

Also, another thing is that, referring players through the champs they're playing now saves the readers of any given message regarding another player from 1 additional logic step of connecting the player's name with which champion on the team, before subsequently getting to who they are or being referred to, in the middle of the match, because you need to just look at the champion and think "oh, they're talking about this dude". It's more convenient and faster.
