Premades reporting you means jack shit compared to one person reporting you. For a review, the system just checks for there being a report, not how many reports there are. Additional reports past the first do nothing, unless they cover different topics (i.e. If one person reports for the name, while another reports for abusive language, that might have bearing on the punishment, as I don't think Riot always checks everything in relation to a report).
No. You did not "defend yourself". You lashed out at them. Defending yourself is taking action needed to stop the attack, not retaliating with even more force. Defending yourself in League consists of muting them and responding in the negative (i.e. "No, I did not say that"). Defending yourself is NOT flaming them back.
You being punished does not mean they will not be punished. Punishments are handled separately from other punishments. If you do something wrong, you will be punished. If they do something wrong, they will be punished. No part of the code checks for if the reporting person was punished.
If they weren't punished, you either reported them for something completely unrelated and didn't include chat at all in it (e.g. you only reported them for feeding and AFK), or didn't report them at all.
If you got suspended, you either have a long history of flaming, or you went far above and beyond mere flaming.
You are free to defend yourself. Please raise your shield and assume a defensive stance by using the mute button, which vanishes their toxicity into thin air.

Counterflaming isn't defending. 2 wrongs don't make it right. You could just mute and report and be done with it instead of engaging in a pointless argument with toxic people.

You can't know that. The IFS systems notifications are highly unreliable, so even if you didn't get a message they could've received a chat restriction/14-day ban.
