"I'd rather have a toxic teammate than a bad one"

Do you agree with that statement?

Before you downvote this, this isn't my opinion necessarily, just something for people to discuss here.

With toxic I mean a toxic person that's playing neutral/well but hard flaming all game, vs a friendly person that's playing badly.

Made this topic on the EU boards as well, and it got a massive amount of replies, so I was wondering what the NA community thinks.

As someone who often plays with friends, and who has friends of varying skill levels, I disagree. Someone who is legitimately bad at the game can still listen to calls, and they can improve, where as someone who is toxic is already going down a dark path that I just don't want to deal with.

I would much rather have a loss on a friendly team than a win with horrible excuses for human beings.

What was the consensus over there?

yes.

you can mute against toxicity, but can't do anything against your AD going 1/10

Xenohaz2/2/2018, 3:46:19 AM45 votes

In ranked, yes. In norms, no.

Chermorg2/1/2018, 9:18:33 PM33 votes

No. I don't agree in the slightest.

A bad teammate has the potential to lose me a game. So what? This is a video game. It's still possible to have a ton of fun even losing, even getting smashed into the ground and steamrolled.

A toxic teammate has the potential to ruin the game experience. So what? I can mute them, but then I'm cutting off communication, they may still be toxic through pings, and it creates a negative environment for everyone in the game - which not only ruins the fun for everyone but makes it more likely we lose the game, adding insult to injury so to speak.

Yeah, I like winning. But I like not having toxic players more than I like winning.

I just hate playing with toxic people. I'd much rather play with a bunch of noobs who are friendly than a bunch of good players who are mean.

i cant MUTE shitty teammates actions. i can MUTE a toxic teammates words.

TheDevice2/2/2018, 3:27:27 AM23 votes

I'm ready for the downvotes

I'd take the toxic/good player if im in ranked.

The nice/bad player tilts me a bit more.

Im thinking of real situations ive had. I've seen some of the friendliest people in the game single-handedly lose me a game. Hard. At that point, you're not really trying to win. Climbing is not a thing.

When riot's popularity is grossly based on competition and promoting competition; it fees a bit unfair when they do a 180 and say "its only a game; just be merry and lose. Being good isnt a big deal". Like, well some people want to be good and try hard in ranked games and want to see the fruits of their labor.

For me, getting the friendly/bad player is like getting a drunk player on my team. They may be fun and happy, but you know you're going to lose.

If im playing a friendly game; no problem. If im playing a game to win; i'd love to see some people actually try on my team.

If im being 100% honest, I'd take the toxic/good player. I'll admit; maybe thats not a healthy perspective about a game lol. I kinda wish I really didn't care too much a bout my rank. I meany why? It is just a game. You'd never hear riot promote it as such, but it is. Can you imagine their next marketing campaign? XD "DW its just a game. You don't have to be good. Just have fun."

Ask any pro player in a pro game (maybe even some important promos) who'd they rather have; a friendly/bad player or a toxic/good player.

To elaborate a friendly/bad playing im saying you're pretty much 4v6. Like the player is feeding their entire team, building the worst build ever on their champion, and basically drunk. I can mute or ignore people too verbal in chat. The worst of toxicity I've experienced is somebody pinging too much. Usually (not always) if I tell them to stop they do. So im basing this on what I've personally experienced from either camp.

Xidphel2/1/2018, 9:21:15 PM21 votes

Toxic teammates are more likely to int, feed, AFK and generally be an asshole. Simply being bad doesn't mean you're not trying to play the game and be good.

sleepysithlord2/2/2018, 5:08:40 AM14 votes

I've never been tilted by a simply "toxic player." Only players who are soft inting or playing bad AND typing toxic shit. So if you are playing well, you can type whatever you want. Like, if someone is playing well, they are directly helping me out and benefiting me. What they type literally means nothing. I'll never understand people who get tilted by the person carrying them.

Spearlon2/2/2018, 6:37:36 AM11 votes

Mute them, and it becomes a question of whether you want to play with someone playing well or someone playing bad. Pretty obvious choice.

Moonfall Saber2/2/2018, 12:40:45 AM11 votes

Id rather have a jerkoff asshole draven adc player who knows his champion than a shit ashe player who doesnt know jack.

Dankest Khan2/2/2018, 1:01:35 AM10 votes

I prefer toxic teammates because I /fullmute all every game anyways. The only people worth communicating with are my friends in discord. Typing words at my team has never made them play better in my experience.

ChíckenDaddy2/2/2018, 1:36:28 AM9 votes

I can mute people so yes.

I Main Swain2/2/2018, 3:20:57 AM9 votes

i vehemently disagree for 2 reasons.

reason 1, this is a game and its meant to be fun. even if im having an amazing game a toxic ally is a fun black hole, literally the only thing they accomplish is upsetting people, there is no positive to come out of being toxic.

reason 2, being toxic to your team will usually make your team play exponentially worse, both from them purposely playing like crap to ruin your game and from them just tilting hard af.

reason 2.5, on the flip side of reason 2, being a good sport to your allies even when theyre doing bad will not only make the game more enjoyable all around but can often help people to play better, take tips and advice better (im a lot more likely to listen to someone politely telling me not to push than someone flaming their face off at me), and increase teamwork which is obviously central to this game.

so basically, having a toxic teammate IS having a bad teammate

themachamp2/1/2018, 9:32:30 PM8 votes

If its for 1 game and its ranked i'd take the toxic( but good) over bad any day. I can mute toxic but i can't mute badness/inexperience. The MMR system just sees if i won or not.......not if i had a "good time". I know some people are new or whatever but I DON'T want to be the person who has to pay for their learning experience as they go 0/11/1 with 63 cs in 35 mins as a solo top or something.

MasterDClone2/2/2018, 4:26:45 AM7 votes

I aggree with this entirely, The worst is having someby being really nice as their feeding and making the worst decision like going in 1v5 and die and they say"mb guys i really tried" is by far more toxic than anything a toxic player can throw at me it just pisses me off beyond beliefe and what can i do i cant report for toxic or int cuz it doesnt work so i want the toxic player 10 games out of 10

Vistha D Reptile2/2/2018, 3:10:16 PM7 votes

A toxic player who's playing at an acceptable level?

Every. Single. Time.

I only play ranked and my fun is called either "winning" or "not getting fucked up beyond recognition", so every player that isn't a dead weight, even if toxic, is a fine addition to my collection the team.

Ionian Vulpix2/2/2018, 2:53:40 PM6 votes

I can mute a flamer. I can't stop a feeder.

xelaker2/2/2018, 5:26:14 PM6 votes

In my experience bad is usually a worse sort of toxic. But I'd rather have a competent asshat then a friendly scrub, pretty hard to win with someone going 3/14/6 rather than 10/4/3

Akali Prime2/2/2018, 6:06:18 PM6 votes

id much rather have a toxic player on my team than a bad player because bad players make ME toxic and im trying to reform. riot wont admit it but in most cases its the bad players whose GAMEPLAY is toxic and thats what pisses "toxic players" off

Oxyrotten2/2/2018, 2:13:10 AM6 votes

Sadly yes. My back is so sore.

Besides you can always mute or ignore bm. You can't mute or ignore feeding and throwing.

Scary Door2/2/2018, 8:29:54 AM6 votes

I'm there to win games, I couldn't care less what your attitude or disposition happens to be, I can mute toxic players, there is nothing I can do about bad ones.

Give me the toxic asshole that's good over the bad player any day.

gas yourseIf2/2/2018, 8:33:02 AM6 votes

Of course, a teammate that talks shit but still has your back and helps you is worth 100 feeding useless nice guys.

Malcha2/2/2018, 12:05:05 PM6 votes

I'd rather have a skilled toxic player I can mute than a friendly player who goes 0/9.

I like LP gains and have no problem using the mute button.

If it's norms or arams, I'd rather have an enjoyable loss than an un-fun, stressful, rage-inducing win.

Zed genius2/2/2018, 5:26:18 PM5 votes

Gimme 4 toxic teammates I don't give a damn as long as they play well

DeathProfessor2/2/2018, 1:27:52 AM4 votes

More clarity is required for this question. There are following types of players in a particular game:

  • Feeding Type (feeds the lane/ bad day, but a team player, winning is priority)
  • Toxic Type (toxic carry type also a team player(meaning he will group if required for winning but will still be flaming randomly on the side), winning is the priority)
  • Feeding + Egoistic Type (feeds the lane, not a team player, winning might not be the priority since he is not ahead)
  • Toxic + Egoistic Type (carry toxic, not a team player, winning might be the priority only through his terms)

People are confusing bad(feeding) types with a preconception that they are non egoistic and are always team player but that is not the case. I have seen split pushing Ashe's in my games, who feed their lane 2v2, and keep on split pushing against a Zed in bot while whole team is asking them for help doing baron. Though they might not be intentionally feeding but their intention is not to win either(since in that particular game they are not the one's carrying so its a loss in their eyes)

Similarly Toxic + Egoistic types are bad for the game too, since they don't group when the team want them to or play as a team. But with them at-least rest of the team can make a decision and group towards their lane for the win, you can not do that with the feeding+egoistic type since they are already behind and they cant dictate objectives like the person who is toxic+egoistic but still carrying.

So the lesser of two evils is toxic+egoistic compared to feeding+egoistic

Btw. following is the priority from me: Toxic Type > Feeding Type > Toxic+Egoistic > Feeding + Egoistic. Having an egoistic feeder is most definitely a loss, but having a egoistic toxic payer there is still a chance to win it just is a little hard.
