LoL and Mental Health. What's your experience?

I've been playing League of Legends for three years and finally decided to uninstall. I found the game has recently been impacting my day and I really don't want a video game impacting my life. The community seems way more toxic than ever and the honor system truly isn't helping anything anymore. I did notice a difference when it first came out last season however. As I have gotten better at the game, it has become unplayable for me personally due to toxic teammates. Today for example I ulted someone away with Tristana and didn't kill them because I was exhausted. I got flamed all game by my team for that one mistake. I don't know if it's just the elo I'm in or what but I never seemed to have this problem in silver. In gold/plat the game becomes hell to play. If you don't drop at least 15 kills you can expect to be flamed half of the time. It's really a shame but I want to come back to the game in a few months to see if anything has changed. What are your opinions on this and has the game impacted your mood?

Listen I think the worst part isnt flaming and the toxic community but the games refusal to deal with trolls....Been hard climbing in the jungle working hard 3 lp from getting my promos and I get a adc soraka, jax mid, ad tf top, and ap shaco support....Wouldnt be so bad considering the fact they had 2 adcs we could push our lead right? Nope shaco and soraka fed them super hard early game where the twitch support was 5-1-7 at 10 minutes and we had a 3-13-14 soraka who had most of the deaths and would purposefully run into all the enemies.............

I think you are in a toxicity pocket where the toxicity is at it's highest.

Those areas are typically:

  • lvl 25 and below
  • Bronze5
  • Plat5
  • Diamond5

Anywhere else, the toxicity isn't as bad as you mentioned.

ninjaroxas2/15/2018, 7:26:41 PM11 votes
  • don't play ranked. Most toxic part of league by far.
  • play what you find fun even if it isn't that good. I play dumb stuff like tailyah jungle and sej support for example.
  • play with friends or friendly people you find in games. Being in a voice chat makes this work better

This is what I do and I find the game enjoy able most of the time. I say give them a shot if you are willing to

Also in general just ignore the community

Yes, it's toxic as fuck but that's why I mute people as soon as they show the smallest signs of toxicity. Today I was playing as Eve. All the lanes were losing and I was constantly camping them and trying to balance which lane I was going to. I was taking chickens when all of a sudden Vel'Koz runs into the middle of his lane and gets bursted down by Twisted Fate. He proceeds to flame me in chat saying "Eve you're such a bad jungler" "Eve I hate you" "Eve go fuck yourself" and a bunch of other childish stuff, so I muted him. Next thing I know, Zed is flaming me as well, don't even ask me why, I have no idea. I guess he just wanted to kiss Vel'Koz's ass? Idk. I'm so over it. I love this game but tbh there's nothing that can be done about toxicity other than the /mute button.

EL HAMSTERO2/15/2018, 9:08:17 PM5 votes

the game will always be toxic.

just the way it is designed ensures that when things dont go right teammates will turn on teach other. every kill your teammate gives makes your enemies stronger and stronger until you cant even fight them anymore.

when you are fighting your hardest to hold your own in your lane and your midlaner is feeding kill after kill, it is extremely hard to not be annoyed. you know that they are building a monster and pretty soon it is going to come to your lane and destroy you.

that is just the base rules of the game. then when you throw in leaverbuster, autofill, mmr, afks, and trolls and you have the most toxic game ever created.

just think what a perfect game LoL is for trolls. they can make the enemy team stronger directly by feeding. they can make you weaker by stealing your cs and xp. and you cant escape them. any other game if someone is trolling you leave. in LoL leaverbuster gets you. if you say anything to them they can get you punished/banned. its the greatest game ever for trolls.

I know that it sounds really weird, but toxicity in game kinda helped me to improve as person. I started to be more immune to harassment, that I can face not only in game, but in real life as well (by harassment I mean toxic notes adressed to me or straight verbal abuse, or just jokes). I do actively use mute button, but I don't use it right when I get abused first time, plus I have some borders set by myself of when I mute person and when I don't. In real life I created a mute button "in my brain" I just start to ignore the person and become very indifferent to his words/feelings. So yeah this game kind of helped me. I also learnt to be more critical to myself and admit my mistakes trying to avoid them next time.

Unchimely2/16/2018, 2:46:01 AM4 votes

Personally I’ve found that if I give them nothing to work with and don’t respond or just say,”mb”, the toxicity lowers and you get along.

redniwediS2/15/2018, 6:39:08 PM4 votes

I make extensive use of the mute button, and often play with friends. I enjoy this game, but I take steps to prevent toxicity from ruining it for me.

What steps do you take to prevent toxicity from ruining your game?

ChíckenDaddy2/15/2018, 7:23:22 PM4 votes

I use to have a lot of trouble but I spent the last year focusing on being more emotionally stable, remembering to mute people, and taking small breaks after almost every game. I've been enjoying the game a lot more sense I've done this.

Eternal Torment2/16/2018, 8:05:13 AM3 votes

What is my experience?

League made me suicidal last year. I took a 3 months break for intensive therapy. Came back, got depressed again so i quit for good.

The game is fun. The people in it aren't. It's common trait to be a toxic self-victimizing shit that would go as far as to actually threaten your irl safety cuz you didn't ward blue at 1.55 but did at 1.54

The game does nothing to punish trolls. Personally the game creates mental health issues towards the plays who want to rank up, yes all you gents say " There is a mute button." but please in all honestly can the mute button stop sona from going mid, soraka adc, the 0/13 yasuos. the jungles who don't ganks and just afk. the adc's who throw the hardest temper tantrums and refuse to group? i got banned from the game a long time ago because i lost my shit. what remedies are there for this toxic game. we are addicted to it we want to play ranked to climb to prove our selves we are not bronze trash, silver trash, ect.

The game forces you to endure the toxicity that it has and does nothing to protect the player. How is it fair for an afker to ruin a whole match. look at Dota 2. one afks the game becomes safe for others to leave and that's it no harm is done others leave wait a bit and re queue. something so simple would kill this problem with afks. you have a system that punishes verbal abuse yea cool beans riot but when you abuse the person enough they snap. majority of these toxic players are players who had enough of the feeders and trolls. i have seen the most sweethearted person become vile and toxic after a season in ranked. " why don't you just stop playing or mute them. Dodge even?" we get punished for dodging queue, you bleed out our points in order to prevent abuse from the trolls and when we finally get a game we are stuck with them for 20 mins min, we can't seem to win. i don't understand why people act like this is not something trivial. it's killing us and riot does nothing to help.[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

NekoniClaws2/15/2018, 6:47:13 PM3 votes

Sometimes the game bums me out seriously (toxicity, or just lose streaks eating at my fun) and I just like, run on low batteries for the rest of the day. (My anxiety makes things drain me faster)

But on the flip side, 99% of the time it's actually helping with the anxiety, and my insomnia, by offering an escape where I need it, and something to think about or do when I can't sleep. Also the friends I've made playing league are awesome people, it's great to have friends not wrapped up in my work / home life. Pretty positive actually. I think the more self-confident you are the less the toxicity eats at you.

I used to love and really enjoy this game, slowly from season 6 till now i have been finding the game harder to play each year as they ramp up the damage. I only really stay at all for my girlfriends who play this game as well as the fact i hope the fix LoL. League helped me get through one of the hardest times in my life when my fiancee died from cancer so this game has a lot of meaning to me. Unfortunately riot is ruining this game steadily.

Amtipurrfy2/17/2018, 1:05:17 AM1 votes

Ive had mental health problems (Nothing major, just general depression and anxiety) and the toxicity bothered me a lot more when I started playing the game years ago. I dont think Ive become as desensitized as much as Ive realized that some people just unload emotions on the internet. While I used to feel more personally attacked by rage, I think they're just releasing it at whoever is currently in front of them.

I think there are too many players that dont understand that ranked is a marathon, not a sprint. If they arent winning every game, they arent seeing improvement in their rank. They see the top 10 players in challenger with 60%+ win rates, not realizing that's mainly due to the start of the season, placements, getting paired with some diamond players on their way back to challenger, and that even most challenger win rates will normalize to low/mid 50%. Most players who are improving at a normal rate usually have just over a 50% win rate (Like 50-55%) when playing vs players at near skill levels. So even players who are improving barely win more than half their games.

A lot of people just get angry at losing, and have problems dealing with those emotions. Partly due to being younger and less mature/experienced with it, and partly due to possibly deeper issues. Ive learned that it's not usually personal, even if it's targeted at me. 99% of the time I know they'll have forgotten about me by the time they're in their next game, and they'll just being yelling at someone else. I just mute and move on, as Ive realized there's no reason to let them batter me with verbal abuse (Im sure it would get to me if I allowed myself to read it all game, one statement Ive learned to shake off easily), and report them when the match is over.

This forum shows how frequently people are getting punished with how many people are posting about their punishments. It seems like a lot of people dont even realize they're being toxic until they post their chat logs here and have like 10 people tell them they deserve it. And Im sure the amount that post here are just a fraction of players who are being punished for it.

Unfortunately, there are millions and millions of players, so dealing with all toxicity is pretty much impossible, especially when it's a free to play game where people can just make another account (Granted they have to start back at lv 1, Im sure that gets old with consistent bans). The level of toxicity allowed is WAY less than it used to be. Years ago you could badger people with no punishment as long as you didnt use any racial/homophobic slurs. Now you get a chat ban (Escalating to bans if frequent enough) just for being negative towards someone in nearly any way.

U GOT WRECKT LOL2/17/2018, 3:03:48 AM1 votes

Unfortunately the game is shit now. The ban system is such fucking garbage and Riot has supported this "offended" lifestyle to the point where anything and everything short of perfection is reported. Even trying to give encouragement to a teammate results in the milennial response of "STFU MUTED REPORTED." It's actually quite comedical how spineless and pansified kids are these days.

Aside from that, the game has never been in a worse state. Tank meta for 3 years now, there is no reason to play anything else aside from Janna and ADCs. As if tank meta wasn't bad enough, now everyone gets a free fucking stopwatch to deter assassins being picked even moreso. Then they build into the best safety-giving items in the entire game on top of it. The balance team has gotten progressively worse through the history of this game, and I would not be surprised if it was comprised of people with a hidden agenda to ruin this game and create their own, because that is all they have done is ruin this game over the past 5 years.

Well, I've been using League as a sort of anti-depressant, it really makes me forget about my constant barrage of negative thoughts. It's horrible, I hate it, sometimes it makes me feel good, other times it just exhausts me like "do I really want to play league? I feel tired" and not like physically, I just feel tired before I even play my first game. I still play because it's the only thing I have going on for me since I hate leaving my house, I like it but the snowflakes in the community scare me cuz like, what if I make a controversial joke in chat? But aside from those horrible members, I like it, even the toxic members, they may say my mother is gay but I can't complain when they're 18/2.

I suffer the same ever since season 6.I either hard win and get my mojoup or i end up losing and i wanna just punch people in the face. added the fact that i've always been a dude with anger issues it is really not my cup of tea anymore. I personally do not care a single bit about toxicity i only care about bad gameplay and throwing which happens a lot in my shitty *high elulullluulul. Quit the game if it ruins your mood. It isnt worth it unless you make money out of it like i do. Thats the only thing that drives me to keep one high elo acc and the rest work around making money out of it.

ZiaShakee2/16/2018, 11:45:09 AM1 votes

I find that ranked is toxic and makes you toxic as well. But anything not ranked should be fun and barely has anyone toxic as my experience

P4ppino2/16/2018, 12:12:19 PM1 votes

A few years back when I was new to the game (probably 5 years ago), I was really toxic. I would tell my teammates after 1 death that they suck, they're noobs, etc.

Then I got chat restricted. Over and over again. And I played down my punishment (200+ games or so), and I just grew out of it. Luckily the hextech crafting wasn't available back then, but I was ashamed of my behaviour, and I have never gotten any punishments since. I tell you this, because I think it's mainly age dependent, and people just grow out of it someday.

People who flame don't understand how to play the game properly, usually I try to talk sense into them first. If it doesn't work, just focus on your own gameplay and not the flamers. You are not there to please anybody. That's why I can easily shut out flamers, just brush them off and carry. You can also mute them of course. That's effective as well.

Liquid Poro 2/16/2018, 12:20:40 PM1 votes

Im gonna answer the title.

My experience of playing these games is everytime when I see people like teemo adc, I'm already been trigger the whole game. I can get stress by having 14 loss in row with all bad games.

AgeOfTheMage2/16/2018, 2:42:06 PM1 votes

Mmhm, I used to never get angry at anything, and if I did it was only for 5 seconds(I can't seem to stay angry) but league... it made me toxic and when I saw that, I took a break.. I came back. I have a group of friends I showed league, before league they were much kinder but now they're more salty and toxic :I

Forhonor3212/16/2018, 3:22:04 PM1 votes

Honestly I've just had to stop playing against real people after a while now. Mostly go AI for First Win and because it's more casual and relaxed. PVP just feels bad.

You'll get flamers, toxic players that don't do good themselves, and otherwise just people who may or may not troll. For example, one of my more recent games was playing Kog with a Singed support. Singed couldn't really do much due to the poke, we were heavily getting punished, and when Kayn decided to gank us while under tower, Singed actually threw the Kayn** towards me **and got me killed. I promptly raged quit after that, because I was on a lose streak at the time and I do not tolerate that kind of behavior in a makeshift support option like Singed.

What I'm trying to say is that League as a whole has affected me negatively since I always get pent up in anger an frustration from all the other toxicity from players in the game, and just the game in general in it's current condition of snowball, high damage meta. If anything, I've just kind of gone back to my roots of playing AI, just because it's sooo much more calming. Play whatever you want, experiment, train with new champs a bit, etc.

And honestly, just my opinion, Stay Away From Ranked. It's usually where most toxicity is and how the system is built is just awful to climb, which may lead to toxicity yourself.

NocturnalSheild2/16/2018, 3:39:10 PM1 votes

Just mute everyone?

I hardly even read chat and i.never talk myself so i have no issues.

RainbowIcee2/16/2018, 4:11:36 PM1 votes

I guess i'm alone in my experience from the comments. But no not really, I consider myself a calm and patient person even in anger or when upset i tend to just give up on things and people and leave them be. Anyways i get more upset at people at work rather than people in the game and ofcourse because i feel i'm more calm than most people it gives me a sense of superiority that i don't have to lower myself to their petty levels.

swordofsun2/16/2018, 4:42:48 PM1 votes

I don't think there's anything inherently good or bad about LOL with regards to mental health. Everyone is different and everyone reacts to things differently. One person may dive deep into League in order to avoid real world problems and thus exasperate them. Another might use League as a relaxing break to recharge their mental energy. I don't think you can make an across the board generalization.

That being said people need to take care of themselves. Self care is important. I'm glad you're taking steps to improve your mental health.

It's important to know what you need to do for your mental health. Sometimes that changes over time. Maybe you'll decide that you like playing League, but you don't want to touch ranked ever again. Maybe you'll go off and play Sunless Seas and have fun eating your crew and adoring the Dawn Machine. Just, good on you for recognizing the problem and taking steps to keep yourself safe and healthy.

Wild Herbivore2/16/2018, 4:57:02 PM1 votes

What do you expect?

  • Riot does not deal with trolls at all. This actually breeds toxicity even more. Duh.

  • The forced 50% win rate. I'm sorry if you disagree, it's a thing other companies have confessed to. look it up. Also breeds toxicity.

  • Only a select handful of champions are viable and all they do is 1 shot everything. This breeds frustration = Toxicity.

  • Riot does not and will not give a fuck cause 10 million other players still give them money for skins, so in short... they do not care if you leave, you actually leaving means less people complaining (justifiably) so for them it's all good.

Blue Moon Wolf2/16/2018, 8:28:32 PM1 votes

Honestly the game has made my mood very bad and it wasn't until I started playing Monster Hunter World that I realized how much it ruined my mood, one of the major things being how Riot has handled my main over the past few years and the other major thing being how bad it feels to play solo. Since then I decided to quit playing until my main gets updated and just making that decision felt like a weight was lifted off my chest.
