The Red-Zone

Greetings Summoners and Riot employees, today I would like to discuss The Red-Zone and it's clear lack of representation in-game. Now at this point you either have no clue what I'm talking about or what I'm getting at, and to that I say: Slow down partner I'm getting there. Now I recently had my account permanently banned, I may or may not have gotten extremely heated with a Troll in a game and hinted at knowing people who were familiar with DDOSSing or however it's spelled (which for the record I do not, just wanted him to stop being a troll). Which resulted in a two week suspension. Understandable right?

Now here's where the kicker is, that was 5 months ago and I had forgotten about it entirely. So obviously I get heated in a few ranked games due to people intentionally feeding or leaving the game (because low Elo sucks, and Silver IV is probably the worst of it).

[zombie-brand-facepalm]

THEN BOOM. Permabanned. 8 Reports in 20 games, with a chat history of 3 matches where I was reported for toxicity (which to be fair I was fairly toxic, but only after being provoked). I was confused, I assumed that it had to be a mistake, being permanently banned for 3 matches worth of toxicity has to be a mistake right? So I posted my Ticket to see if I could get the issue corrected. After submitting my ticket I noticed that I had one from 5 months ago and remembered what had happened.

After several email exchanges it became apparent that the account was lost, 7 years worth of experience and memories lost over something stupid that I had said 5 months prior.

For future reference I would recommend further updating the report system in order to show players who are currently in the red just how close they are to being permanently banned. The honor system is great and all, but had I known that I was so close to having my account permanently banned my actions would have been catastrophically different I can assure you of that.

There are a lot of people who take the game seriously, but we aren't bad people. We just get lost in the moment and some sort of indicator would help pull these types of players back down.

I had gone 5 months without losing my head and had honestly forgotten about the previous suspension, so it came as a huge shock to receive the permaban.

**I'd honestly recommend a small avatar like Yuumi to tell players just how well they are doing (kind of like the paper clip from the old Microsoft office). This could even take the place of the notice one gets when receiving key fragments, and if you aren't doing so hot the message could just be "Remember that you are one step away from losing your account, play smart so that you can keep returning to the Rift".

**

I'm not condoning my actions, or the actions of anyone else who has had an account permabanned, I am only suggesting a better way to keep a player informed of their current standing.

Thanks for reading, try not to post anything too negative about how they deserved it and what not. This is merely a suggestion to help.

While I do get that it can be frustrating, it's also intentionally not made easy knowledge to prevent abuse.

Otherwise a troll could just hover at the very edge, just shy of being banned.

or you could just not be toxic whether you are close to perma-ban or completely clean? Try be catastrophically different ALL THE TIME yeah? So you'll only behave when you are close to punishment but won't when you're not? This is probably one of the reason Rito doesn't want to show you you are in the "red".

I am going to handle excepts of your posts, due to its length,

I may or may not have gotten extremely heated with a Troll in a game and hinted at knowing people who were familiar with DDOSSing or however it's spelled (which for the record I do not, just wanted him to stop being a troll). Which resulted in a two week suspension. Understandable right?

"May or may not have"? Which is it? If you dispute the occurrence, then you make your claim to Riot. If you do not, and know that the "may not" part is untrue, then you are attempting to garner a false narrative of doubt in the event that transpired.

Given this is your opening statement, your credibility is starting razor thin, here.

Now here's where the kicker is, that was 5 months ago and I had forgotten about it entirely.

First, 5 months of relatively clean behavior is not that long at all. Second, reform is not a temporary state which one attains then is able to misbehave again. It is a permanent behavior change.

THEN BOOM. Permabanned. 8 Reports in 20 games, with a chat history of 3 matches where I was reported for toxicity (which to be fair I was fairly toxic, but only after being provoked).

It doesn't matter if you are provoked or not. You are expected to behave appropriately regardless how others are behaving.

For future reference I would recommend further updating the report system in order to show players who are currently in the red just how close they are to being permanently banned.

Having a "redzone" style indicator would only serve as a means for people to try to game the system, going just below the line and then misbehaving again. Rinse and repeat.

The honor system is great and all, but had I known that I was so close to having my account permanently banned my actions would have been catastrophically different I can assure you of that.

While I can understand that your behavior may have been different, the reality is that it should have been different regardless how close you were to the ultimate punishment.

There are a lot of people who take the game seriously, but we aren't bad people. We just get lost in the moment and some sort of indicator would help pull these types of players back down.

Like a referee and some sort of system to warn you that your behavior is out of line? There is a system for that in place already, it is called IFS. You were explicitly warned that further misbehavior could forfeit your ability to play on the account. Having a short-term memory and/or not taking that warning seriously does not make a strong case for adding an indicator. People will do the same, and say nearly the same ("I didn't see the indicator...", "Why didn't they give me a warning on the screen...").

I had gone 5 months without losing my head and had honestly forgotten about the previous suspension, so it came as a huge shock to receive the permaban.

Again, 5 months is a tiny time frame, especially when reform is meant to be permanent.

The vast majority of people would welcome options that could help people reform. I think most people would prefer not to give people a way to avoid being punished. While both would have the same end result (fewer people getting perma banned), their motives are entirely different.
